1) A lot of the storylines revolve around them getting out of the ghetto, but something happens at the last minute that screws it up

2) Some of the storylines seem recycled from Season 2
The episode with Florida's cousin Raymond being a gambler who loses it all is similar to the episodes where James' friend is a gamble who loses it all

and

The episode where Michael gets locked up while he's disposing a plant that Florida was allergic too seemed to be taken from the episode where JJ got arrested. Both situations were a case of mistaken identity

That's why people stopped watching because when they thought thelma was going to move out the projects and then her husband broke his leg and couldn't play football, people back then probably said "f*ck this show
