View Full Version : Seasons 1-5 were without a doubt THE best seasons
FuriosityShell 04-21-2014, 11:42 PM Is it just me or did anyone else see such a big decline between the end of season 5 and the beginning of season 7. Seasons 1-5 were the best seasons of the show with Season 6 being extremely good as well. But when Season 7 rolled around, the vibe of the show had completely morphed into something else. Does anyone else agree?

I think both Seasons 6 and 7 both had some great episodes, though I agree that the best seasons of the series were 1-5. Season 5 is my absolute favorite season! :)
Will and Grace Fanatic 05-19-2014, 09:47 PM I think the first 7 seasons were great. After that I don't know what exactly happened.
FuriosityShell 05-20-2014, 06:03 PM Seasons 1-5 (with 4 being my favorite) were the best in my opinion as I stated. The first half of Season 6 was on par with those seasons, but the latter half just kind of brings it down. Seasons 7 and 8 had some great episodes though (Skeleton in the Closet, Sisters, Follow the Son, My Name Is Bev, Shower the People You Love With Stuff, Direct to Video, The White Sheep of the Family, Becky Howser, M.D., Disney World War II, Another Mouth to Shut Up, The Wedding, Heart & Soul and Fights & Stuff) but the magic started to fade. Before, the Conners were a lower middle class family that felt like real people and they were likable. And they were sarcastic, loud and dysfunctional, you tell that they were loving deep down. While they were The characters became mean-spirited particularly Roseanne and D.J. (though D.J. behaved like a normal bratty 13 year-old) and the Conners were no longer likable or relatable and you no longer felt sorry for them. Not to mention all Roseanne did was put everyone down by that point. Don't get me wrong, I don't hate these seasons (season 9 is the one I hate), they just don't hold up to the awesome quality of Seasons 1-5 1/2.
Sorry if i sounded a bit repetitive in my rant, I just felt I should have explained my previous statement a bit more.

I think what happened was that the characters changed. In my opinion, the heart and soul of anything (movies, books, TV shows) is the characters. The characters became just shells of their former selves.
Roseanne started out as sarcastic but loving wife and mother but morphed into a mean, man-bashing witch.
Dan, I think, was the only character who stayed consistent and never really changed, though I think his character got lazier and paid less attention to his kids over time.
Jackie started out as a neurotic lovable screw-up and morphed into a crazy, annoying woman.
Darlene (my favorite character) was seldom around during the later seasons which I think weakened the show (I know Sara Gilbert had to go to college though).
DJ was a lovable, though weird isolated little boy who just become a total brat.
After Lecy Goranson left, Sarah Chalke took over the role of Becky which was fine with me but the writers didn't do too much with the character after that. Becky was just THERE, that's all, which is a shame because she was a very realistic, valuable character.
mets82 05-21-2014, 03:39 PM I think Season 1-4 were good. I actually think Roseanne got too cute as time went on. What I mean is that it seems like Roseanne was trying to prove that she could do the show without Tom Arnold and whoever and when she was in full control, the show waned. I mean the last season? I cant believe that if Tom Arnold or even Matt Williams was around, those episodes would've even made air.
FuriosityShell 05-22-2014, 04:13 PM Yeah, I think Roseanne had too much control over the show by the end. Season 9 wasn't very good which is a shame because it had so much potential. I could think of a whole bunch of things they could have done with the Conners winning the lottery. While the episodes themselves were messes, the ideas weren't that bad, they just didn't belong on Roseanne. Though as much I dislike Season 9, I will admit there are a few great episodes (by great I mean as good as an average episode of the show from seasons 1-8).
Superbatboy 12-29-2014, 06:13 AM The best episodes were in seasons 3-5 IMO
Like other shows, the best seasons were the earlier ones.
As mentioned, some of the characters did change, and not necessarily for the better (Jackie especially).
mets82 02-06-2015, 06:55 PM I think I would have ended with them winning the lottery as making all that hard work you saw throughout the series and the sacrifices made it all worth it.
