The Turn About Dance
This fan fic takes place right where the episode Girls! Girls! Girls! left off. (Season 4 Episode 17)
Part One
A streak of lightening lit up the night sky. For a few seconds time it was daylight again.
Betty Jo Bradley rushed to catch up to her sisters and their beaus, while her new friend Jerry Mattson attempted to keep an umbrella over their head.
“Hey gang! Wait for us!”
The other four stopped and waited for the two to join them.
More loud thunder and another bolt of lightening.
Billie Jo once again inched tighter to Steve. Automatically, he put his arm around her waist and pulled her closer.
Betty Jo noticed right away that her older sisters were each with their own boyfriends.
Both jealousy and anger pricked at her heart. She had asked Tommy Johnson, (both her and Bobby Jo’s current crush) to the dance.
After the power had gone back on at the Shady Rest, Betty quickly forgot her words about wanting to stay home making pop corn and fudge.
She suddenly remembered how much she had been looking forward to being Tommy’s girl for the night...even if she knew deep down, Tommy would much rather be going to the dance with Bobby Jo. It was time to make her rightful claim. After all Tommy did agree to go to the dance with her.
“Hey! What gives? Bobby, I thought you were going to the dance with Steve?”
“There’s been a change of plans, Shortstop.” Steve’s tone had a firm note in it. “I will be going to the dance with Billie Jo and Tommy is taking Bobby Jo.”
“You kind of left poor Tommy on the spot when you up and decided to stay home and work on the generator.” Billie Jo admonished gently.
Betty felt her face flush and suddenly felt foolish. Billie Jo had a point.
“Yeah.” Tommy piped up quickly “I thought you dumped me just so you could spend time with Jerry. Luckily, Bobby Jo was there to save me from going alone.”
Tommy’s hand lightly covered Bobby’s as they both clung to their umbrella.
Bobby Jo said nothing, but her large dark eyes pleaded with Betty to be a good sport about the whole thing.
It dawned on Betty Jo how much it really meant to Bobby to go to the dance with Tommy. She also realized what a sneaky little stinker she’d been to even ask him in the first place.
It still stung that she was Tommy’s absolute last choice for a date and that he only saw her as Bobby Jo’s little runt sister.
“I’m glad to see that you worked things out with your girl, Steve.” Jerry grinned at his friend. “However; that leaves me without a date...I know I’m not the guy you asked, Betty Jo, but I’d be honored if you’d be my date this evening.”
Betty Jo felt a small thrill.
It could be worse...after all Jerry was even older than Tommy. He too was suave, sophisicated, and handsome. Unlike Tommy, he knew a lot about mechanics and sports. They would have lots to talk about.
To heck with that Tommy Johnson anyway. Betty Jo thought crossly to herself. Bobby Jo could have him.
“I would love to go to the dance with you, Jerry.”
“Then it’s all settled then.” Steve lead the way, as the Cannonball announced it’s arrival over the storm.
The three couples made their way to the train where Floyd waited for them on the platform with his own big black umbrella.
