View Full Version : 12 Actors Who Screwed Up Their Big TV Chances By Getting Fired
We usually think of television actors and actresses as having it good, especially when they land a role on a successful show. Yet, recent years have seen high profile actors fired from their shows after exhibiting bizarre behavior and often crossing the lines of decency. Whatever the cause, these actors and actresses lose the success they worked so hard to obtain and often find it hard to reestablish themselves in Hollywood. And, to make matters worse, their foibles are broadcast in the tabloids for all the world to see, cementing their reputations for years to come.
It’s happened many, many times over the history of television and it will continue to happen as long as actors and actresses remain imperfect people. These are the top 12 actors and actresses who seriously screwed up a big television gig by being fired. Some of them were fired for personal reasons while others were fired for practical reasons. Yet, what they all have in common is that they were a part of a big-name television show… and blew it.

ThomasE 04-18-2014, 10:07 PM Regarding Shannen Doerthy, I checked that link. I think that it is totally false!!! First off, she was not fired after that first episode. She had two scenes in the first episode. It did not seem enough to constitute a firing.
She signed on to do four episodes and was not going to do anymore. Shannon said she did the four eps a "thank you" to her fans. The producers made a deal with her to do another two episodes. Then arranged for her to do another episode for the finale of the first season.
The second season saw changes with the switching of producers. The new producers wanted to take the show in a new direction. They decided not to use Shannon anymore. Then Jennie Garth appeared in fewer episodes and then eventually left.
That is how everything went down.

I was going to write the same exact thing... What really happened is basically the producers decided to retool the show to focus more on the new characters and used less and less of the older characters.....
This was one time she was not fired...
ALSO, on Charmed, Shannen maintains that while there were major issues on-set w/her and the cast, the main reason she left that show was due to a need to get sober, she claims she was heavy into drinking and that after getting a DUI she felt the need to leave the show to get sober.
ThomasE 04-20-2014, 12:34 AM Thank you for clearing that rumor up about "Charmed" as well. Someone who understands where I'm coming from. Thanks much.

I still think that constitutes "screwing up her chances". She's had many chances to get along with her co-workers, and has never been able to do so. She's difficult to work with, whether she's sober or on substances.
UMFaninMD 04-20-2014, 07:19 PM Lisa Bonet also had a falling out with Bill Cosby over her decision to do the movie Angel Heart. In the film, she has a pretty vivid sex scene with Mickey Rourke. Rumor had it that Cosby wanted his on-screen kids to be just as wholesome off-screen too and Bonet wanted to do more adult material. In her case, I think it wasn't so much bad career moves due to attitude or personal problems, but a moral clash with a conservative group she was working for.

It depends on how you define "Big TV chances" and "screwed."
Carl Anthony Payne II did have a starring role as Cole Brown on "Martin" for the entire show's run, and "Martin" was a fairly successful series.
(as a side bar, I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but Carl Anthony Payne II almost always wore a hat when he played his Cole Brown character on "Martin." I'm not sure if that had anything to do with fall out he had with Bill Cosby).
As far as Suzanne Somers, she had a starring role as Carol Lambert on "Step by Step" for the entire show's run, which was also a fairly successful series.
Finally, Damon Wayans was a lead actor on "In Living Color" and played the lead role on "My Wife and Kids" (both fairly successful series), granted both of these shows were produced by him and his brothers, so there was some nepotism involved naturally.
So the aforementioned folks (I don't think) were ever completely shut out.
SitcomsOffline 04-21-2014, 08:42 AM I'm surprised no one mentioned Shelley Long from "Cheers."
While she wasn't fired per se, her strong personality (apparently, she was typecasted as Diane Chambers) frequently clashed with the rest of the cast members and production staff which made her time on the set of Cheers miserable enough to the point where she left after Season 5.
(see what Bette Midler said about working with Shelley Long)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_djUlyQ8q54
Long leaving Cheers pretty much killed her successful acting career that was beginning to bud, as hollywood realized she was too difficult to work with.
megamanj2004 04-21-2014, 08:59 AM Fred "Rerun" Berry. His behavior in demanding more money also influenced his other cast members (particularly Ernest Thomas) to walk off the set on the original run of What's Happening!!
When he tried to demand more money again during What's Happening Now!!, the producers there did not budge and they showed him the door after the first season.

irehtman 04-22-2014, 08:02 AM I know Janet Hubbert Whitten is a more funniest actress than Daphne Maxwell Ried, but unfortunately Janet got fired because she could not control her anger like James Avery. Daphne is funny also, but she is considered a more nicer person.
Same thing with Alexandra Krosney, she was funny, but she too could not control her anger. They should do the same thing for Kaitlyn Dever, she is also funny, but she too also cannot control her anger.
Did Dustin Diamond ended up like Shannon Doherty?
Was Pablo Santos got fired from acting because he was considered a trouble person before he died?
RetroGuy2000 04-24-2014, 01:15 AM I was sad when Dana Plato was fired from Differant Strokes but shocked when she died.
Yeah, that was so shocking. I remember the day it was announced. But her life was so hopelessly messed up by then.
RetroGuy2000 04-24-2014, 01:19 AM Did Dustin Diamond ended up like Shannon Doherty?
If anything, Dustin Diamond has a worse reputation that Shannen Doherty. At least she never wrote a fake tell-all book about her co-stars that later turned out to be full of lies, as Dustin has admitted of his own book.
Dustin is a pariah who will never be asked to work with any of his co-stars again.

Right now, the original class of SBTB is still in low-publicity because right after that 20th Anniversary Reunion incident, the brawl on all the original SBTB class fans cannot end right away.
The normal fans were routing for Zack, Slater, Kelly, Jessie and Lisa.
The mental disabled fans were routing for Screech.
The mental disabled fans abhorred the original class because there was too much difficult appraisal on Screech.
SitcomsOffline 04-24-2014, 08:17 AM I was sad when Dana Plato was fired from Differant Strokes but shocked when she died.
What was even sadder about the whole Dana Plato situation is that her son also killed himself (2 days before the anniversary of her death) because he was so traumatized by her suicide.
So she not only took her life, but the life of her own child as well.
It depends on how you define "Big TV chances" and "screwed."

In the case for Saturday Night Live, you can argue that Damon Wayans isn't the only performer to screw up his big TV chance by getting fired. I mean, I immediately point to the late Charles Rocket (who was pegged to be the breakout star among the cast of the infamous 1980-81 season) uttering the F-word (Charlene Tilton of Dallas was the host and in spoofing the whole "Who shot J.R.?" episode, Rocket towards the end of the show, mumbled "Who the **** did it?") live on air.
The thing w/ Suzanne Somers is that even though she did have a nice run on Step by Step (sort of playing against type in regards to her ditzy blonde image), you can argue that the feeling was that she should've been bigger. I mean, she went from being on one of the highest rated shows on television in Three's Company to a cheesy, Miller-Boyett produced Brady Bunch update for TGIF.
I know Janet Hubbert Whitten is a more funniest actress than Daphne Maxwell Ried, but unfortunately Janet got fired because she could not control her anger like James Avery. Daphne is funny also, but she is considered a more nicer person.

It seems interesting that everybody else on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air seemed to get along very well w/ Will Smith (long after the show ended) except Janet Hubbert Whitten. I remember seeing James Avery in interviews like on Will Smith's E! True Hollywood Story and The Insider that he had to remind Janet that the show was called The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, meaning that regardless, at the end of the day, Will Smith was the star. He also added that he would've liked more storylines too but it wasn't called The Uncle Phil Show.
I don't know what happened to Alexandra Krosney and why she left Last Man Standing. My biggest guess is that she was not comfortable w/ the intended direction that Tim Allen and the new showruner/writers wanted to take the show (i.e. going from a modern day Home Improvement w/ daughters into a would be modern day All in the Family, w/ her character being a liberal foil a la Gloria to Allen's wannabe Archie Bunker).
You can't really compare Dustin Diamond w/ Shannon Doherty anyway because to the best of my knowledge, Dustin was never actually fired/asked to leave any of his shows unlike Shannon.
Yong Fang 04-25-2014, 06:22 AM 12. Mackenzie Phillips – One Day At A Time
Was a drug addict and alcoholic who not keep it together.
11. Grace Lee Whitney – Star Trek
Was a drug addict and alcoholic. I think probably that the show had to cut back on the actors since it was a low rated show, and she was the least favorite or memorable character. She was also a recurring character.
10. Valerie Harper – Valerie
She got greedy, plain and simple. Probably could of had a nice run with that show. Her fault.
9. Brett Butler – Grace Under Fire
See number 11 and 12. Sorry, but I never liked her or her show. I have not looked up IMDB about her, but she seems to have disappeared totally.
8. Lisa Bonet – A Different World & The Cosby Show
She sort of broke the unofficial, don't get pregnant while on the show. Probably the one person who sort of lost her job rough no fault of her own.
7. Charlie Sheen – Two And A Half Men
I can't stand Charlie Sheen. Abusive alcoholic, wife beater, adulterous ketch of a human being, which is why I have never watched his show. But he has another series and is very wealthy.
6. Suzanne Somers – Three’s Company
See Valarie Harper above. Got greedy, and lost. Somersault did ok though, she had a syndicated show and that ABC show with Patrick Duffy that stayed on ABC for a few years. THE hottie on Three's Company was Joyce DeWitt anyway.
5. Damon Wayans – Saturday Night Live
Don't know much about him, although he is a Wayan, I know who he is, and is successful. SNL is more or less a stepping stone for possible fame anyway, and Lorne Michaels is somewhat of a D bag anyway.
4. Dana Plato – Diff’rent Strokes
Drugs and alcohol. I do not feel sorry for Dana Plato. She made a lot of money on that show. She could have left that show and either done other roles perhaps or just went to college, and lived a normal life.
3. Shannen Doherty – Beverly Hills, 90210, Charmed & 90210
She was by all accounts in tabloids and whatnot, a bitch and awful to work with. Nice looking woman, but all of her shows had beautiful, gorgeous, eternally twenty something year old people. I never watched the crap she was on, so she could have been the best person on Earth. Her career wasn't too bad, and better than most people who have tried to break into a career in front of the camera.
2. Janet Hubert-Whitten – The Fresh-Prince Of Bel-Air
Her and the star Will Smith did not get along with each other for some reason. She was very replaceable and she was.

I've read several stories where it was stated the actor who played Coach was really the only one who got along with her (though I believe Woody Harrelson may as well from something I read). Rhea Perlman apparently hated her the most and the clashes on the show were real. Interestingly, Rhea Perlman became good friends with Kirstie Alley and the cast got along with her.
I knew who Shelley Long was before the show mainly because she starred in a local show and appeared in local commercials. One was a furniture commercial and we used to call her the furniture lady.

You can add Howard Rollins getting fired from In the Heat of the Night due to his substance abuse issues to this list.
I know that Brett Butler has a recurring role on (incidentally enough) Charlie Sheen's latest show Anger Management, but it's seems quite apparent that Butler will never be entrusted to anchor her own show again.
The weird thing about Lisa Bonet (http://www.datalounge.com/cgi-bin/iowa/ajax.html?t=13529649#page:showThread,13529649) is that I don't think that we was every really a great performer to begin with. What I mean is even w/o her personal issues/baggage I doubt that her career outside of Bill Cosby, would've gone much far after she had gotten "too old" to play adolescent type roles. If you look back at the first season of A Different World, even though Lisa was the star she was quite obviously the "weak link" (mostly because of Lisa's rather sleepy and subdued acting style/tendencies). It's not that surprising that Whitley and Dwayne ultimately "replaced" Denise as the lead characters on the show.

[235] I've been told this too. In the Moonlighting days Cybill Shepherd got tagged as the "diva" as it was easier for the tabloids to have the woman being the big prima donna, but that set was a total boys club.
That's exactly the story Cybill herself claims (and has claimed for years), but it's just not true. She's not a misunderstood victim of sexism; she's an *******.
She was a total nightmare on the set of "Cybill" and behaved badly to everyone--almost everyone on the set came to hate her, including Christine Baranski, Peter Krause, and Alicia Witt. The only one who liked her was Tom Wopat who was so grateful she had wanted him back for series television.
Alan Ball (who later went on to create "Six Feet Under" and "True Blood") wrote for "Cybill" and hated her too--he mocked her as the hateful and completely self-absorbed diva Catherine O'hara played one season on "6FU." Ball once told a friend of mine she was the worst person in Hollywood he had ever worked with; when my friend reminded him that he had also worked with Grace Butler for "Grace Under Fire," he responded, "Oh you can't even compare the two. There's being tragically mentally ill, and then there's just being a mean and entitled *******."

Valerie Harper is a doll. Her quarrel with the producers of her show was over terms, credit, and money, not her behavior. Everybody loves working with her. I've waited on her a few times at big starry catered events, and she was warm and welcoming to everyone, guest or staff.

Rewatching season one her character was already set up as a liberal going against her fathers conservative attitude. In the pilot she even tells Tim she's mad that of the 12 words her son knows 3 are "I hate Obamacare". So Idt that was it. It also didn't seem like her decision to leave.
noveel 04-30-2014, 12:42 AM Jaimee Foxworth's mother was her agent who wanted Judy to have a bigger part on Family Matters. I don't think that's unreasonable but the producers must not have liked the way her mother went about it.
they probably woulda fired her anyway
RetroGuy2000 04-30-2014, 01:17 AM That's odd. Why did Cosby have an issue with what Cockroach put in his hair?
What a control freak. And I'm a Cos fan.

Idk, I think they might have had her character recurring like Rachel and Richie in later seasons.

Sure. How hard is it to write for a 14-year-old girl? Other Miller-Boyett sitcoms (Step By Step, Full House, etc) managed to do so without any problems.
