Cowabunga! To launch the first run of veteran animated series “The Simpsons” on cable in August, FXX intends to start things with a bang: A 12-day marathon of the series’ 552-episode run.


“It will be the longest continuous marathon in the history of television,” said Jon Landgraf, chief executive of FX Networks, at an upfront presentation held in New York Wednesday. A new app is expected to debut in coming weeks, and while executives at the presentation suggested the name “Simpsons World” had been bandied about, FX Networks spokesman John Solberg said a name for the digital outlet was “not formalized yet.” The app would be distinct from FX’s “FXNow” mobile-viewing application already available.

“Think of it as a comprehensive, beautifully curated digital library of all things ‘Simpsons,’” said Landgraf. “I’m absolutely blown away by what I’ve seen. This could well be the best app I have ever seen.”

There’s reason to give Bart, Lisa, Maggie and the rest a big push. Sale of the series to FXX was valued at more than $750 million over the life of the deal – an astronomical price for syndication. The terms of the pact includes making the vast “Simpsons” archive available via video on demand on the FXNow viewing app. The show has never before been available in wide fashion online or on any SVOD venue.

Landgraf said the unit, which comprises FX, FXX and FXM, would raise the number of original series across FX and FXX to 20 from 11. Among the new series slated to debut in coming months are “The Strain,” a sci-fi horror series based on work from Guillermo del Toro, author Chuck Hogan and writer/producer Carlton Cuse; “Tyrant,” a drama set in the Middle East supervised by “Homeland” producer Howard Gordon; “The Comedians,” a new comedy series featuring Billy Crystal and Josh Gad: and a new comedy series for FXX starring Tracy Morgan that will have long-running “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” as its lead in.

Landgraf touted recent performance of the second season of “The Americans”on FX and said, “I expect we’ll have a season-three announcement soon.” Executives are still waiting for current runs of comedies “Chozen’ and “Legit” to end before making a decision on additional orders for those programs.

Lou LaTorre, president of ad sales for Fox Cable, said his team had just started making outreach on ad opportunities for “The Simpsons,” but indicated interest was robust. The company could seek to align advertisers with thematic runs in “The Simpsons,” he suggested, picking out holidays or appearances by athletes, to help sponsors find a relevant episode or series of episodes alongside which they could make a pitch.

I will definetely mark my calendar for that!! Love the Simpsons but have to ask are they going to be uncut or like they are in syndication?

To say that this is the "Red-Carpet Treatment" would be an understatement.

I hope they include ALL the beginnings and the chalk board messages of ALL episodes.
I would love a dvd or download of just both of those things all in one place
(same with the opening pre song Cheers bit in each episode, especially the ones Coach was in)

On Thursday at the strike of 10 a.m. ET, FXX will drop an absurdly daunting challenge into the laps of channel surfers by airing all 552 episodes of "The Simpsons" in a row.

(In case you’re wondering, two people once made it 86 hours and 37 minutes through a "Simpsons" marathon before Fox ended the contest in a record-breaking tie.)



How can you binge 25 seasons of the animated comedy just 12 days, bearing witness to every Homer “Woo hoo!”, Barney belch, and grisly Scratchy disemboweling? Hydration, meal breaks, micro-naps, and multiple empty DVRs will help, for starters.

Ok, I dont know about the uncut episodes. I clicked on TMC's link about it and didnt find anything. I will say that so far, and I'm not at my tv now-at the library, they are showing the original opening and couch gags, so thats good.

“The Simpsons” was broadcast from 1989 to 2009 in a square-shaped standard definition format, but FXX has been showing those episodes cropped in the rectangular HDTV format. This has resulted in some in-jokes being removed from the series.

My thoughts go out to Dan and his family. I remember Dan saying that the Homer Simpson character was based on his dad. RIP.



I will say I'm loving this marathon. The uncut stuff is great although I dont remember them having 2 commercial breaks during each episode. Also, loved that they broke out the original opening to the show which I loved because I've never seen it.

I could see one person looking at the 12-day The Simpsons marathon in hindsight and noticed how higher the quality was for the show's 1990s episodes than the 2010s episodes. This same scenario can pretty much apply to any other scripted TV show (the show's earlier episodes have higher quality than its later episodes).
