Universal is ramping up a movie version of the sci-fi franchise “Battlestar Galactica”, aiming to develop the film as a complete reimagining of the story.

Transcendence writer Jack Paglen has signed on to write the screenplay. Paglen has also committed to Ridley Scott’s Prometheus sequel for Fox that will start production this fall.

Original series creator Glen Larson will produce the film.

There have been three “Galactica” TV series (including the brief “Galactica 1980″).

The first, starring Lorne Greene and Richard Hatch, ran during the 1978-79 season and was centered on humans engaged in a lengthy war against a cybernetic race known as the Cylons while searching for Earth.

In 2003, a reimagined “Battlestar Galactica” miniseries aired on Sci Fi Channel. The second series, starring Edward James Olmos and Mary McDonnell, went on to run for four seasons.

In 2009, speculation emerged that Bryan Singer was attached to direct a “Battlestar Galactica” movie.

Universal’s exec VP of production Scott Bernstein and director of development Jay Polidoro are overseeing the latest version of “Battlestar Galactica” for the studio.

Warner Bros. will open Transcendence, starring Johnny Depp, on April 18.

Does this mean the reimagining will be reimagined to be like the original show and have main characters' genders reversed to their original status?

(Note: I don't have anything against adding female characters. I'd just rather have new characters added rather than changing the gender of existing male characters- particularly main characters that totally change the dynamic of relationships on the show. Case in point- Apollo and Starbuck.)
As one might can tell, I'm not really a fan of the 2003 reimagined Battlestar: Galactica series- I'd rather watch the original classic, along with Galactica: 1980. At least Glen Larson is involved with this movie so hopefully he will help ensure it's a good movie version.

Oh yeah, I really want to see the same guy who couldn't make the original show work  (FYI, BSG-TOS was canceled because it was bad and got low ratings, not because it was too expensive; that's bull****) handle the new movie.

As flawed as the 2004-2009 show was, at least it had good intentions, and was thematically better than the original show by leaps and bounds. This new movie with Larson at the helm is going to really have to prove itself, especially with the current show being on DVD, Blu-Ray, PPV, iTunes, Hulu, and Netflix and also enshrined in the mind of the public; making the movie appeal to aging (and dying off) fans of the 1978-1979 original isn't going to cut it.
