Stand-up comedian John Pinette died Saturday afternoon at about 2:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel in Station Square.
A supervisor with the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said Mr. Pinette had been suffering liver and heart disease. Examiners did not perform an autopsy, as Mr. Pinette’s personal doctor signed off on his cause of death.
Authorities suspect no foul play.
Mr. Pinette, 50, a native of Boston, was known for his impressions and his self-deprecating pokes at his weight. He reportedly had to delay a series of performances last August to undergo treatment in a rehabilitation facility for prescription drug addiction.
“Thanks to everyone for your concern and well wishes,” he wrote on his Twitter page. “Want to apologize for having missed shows last weekend, but I hope you understand!”
The comedian had performed in films like “Duets,” “Dear God,” “The Punisher” and “Junior.” His most recent hour-long stand-up special “Still Hungry” premiered in 2011.
Mr. Pinette also guest-starred on the series finale of the popular ‘90s sitcom “Seinfeld,” playing the victim of a carjacking. Characters Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer videotape the carjacking and mock him in the process, and end up being charged with violating the Good Samaritan Law.
According to his Facebook page, he was in the middle of touring, and was scheduled next to perform at Ontario Improv, a Canadian comedy club, this Thursday.
The last post on his Facebook said: "Happy Friday everyone! Hope you all have a GREAT weekend! Don't forget to catch me at the Ontario Improv Comedy Club next week, April 10-13!"
