Arthur Leon Eckdahl
"You are out of order, Mr. Matlock!" Veteran character actor Arthur Leon Eckdahl has died. His most enduring role was Judge Harrington, who often chastised defense attorney Ben Matlock, portrayed by Andy Griffith, in the long-running series "Matlock." Eckdahl was 82. Born in Omaha, Eckdahl began his career as a television anchorman and soon moved to California where he studied acting at Desilu Studios. In addition to many stage productions, Eckdahl had featured roles in the psychological thriller "Sliver," starring Sharon Stone and William Baldwin, "The American President," with Michael Douglas and Annette Bening, and "The Heart of Justice," alongside Dennis Hopper and Vincent Price. Perhaps his greatest role was as a father, grandfather, husband and friend. He is preceded in death by his daughter, Marie, and his wife, Patricia. Eckdahl is survived by four children, James, Joseph (Karin), Carol Eckdahl and Lisa Edwards (William). Eckdahl also had five grandchildren: Johan and James Eckdahl, and William, Blake and Samantha Edwards. He will be missed by his many friends at Melvyn's, especially David Shunick. A viewing will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, at Wiefels Mortuary Chapel followed by a graveside service at 12:30 p.m. at Desert Memorial Park.
