"Anyone who stuck with 'How I Met Your Mother' for nine seasons knew, or should have realized, that in the end it would never be about the mother," says Miriam Krule. She adds: "If Ted hadn’t ended up with Robin, that would have been an enormous disappointment. The way Ted ended up with Robin—the ending set up, clearly, years ago—was far more interesting and romantic than anything the show could have told us about the mother in 45 minutes or less. This ending was a tribute to the fans who’d been watching for years...." PLUS: Romance-minded viewers (http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/02/arts/television/how-i-met-your-mother-ends-with-twists-expected-and-sweet.html) should be satisfied, the story all along wasn't about the mother (http://m.ign.com/articles/2014/04/01/how-i-met-your-mother-last-forever-review), what made this finale so beautiful was that Ted was so happy, give the creators credit for sticking with their plan (http://www.vanityfair.com/vf-hollywood/how-i-met-your-mother-finale-questions-answered), one nagging question from the finale may be released as a DVD extra (http://insidetv.ew.com/2014/03/31/how-i-met-your-mother-really-over/), and about that finale song (http://www.vanityfair.com/vf-hollywood/how-i-met-your-mother-finale-song).

I totally agree and with a history of fustration writings or rants on these boards for over a decade, I think again it is time to go.....A recent seldom post 3 weeks ago was very personal (a first for me) about the passing of my father, it did not get one response but I also didn't ask for any, it was a eulogy for a not so perfect father and son relationship. Just one facet of a long life journey.

But back to On Topic: Those complaining sound like the same ones that shouted in shock during "The Sopranos" conclusion......then over time it is now considered one of the best shocking finales in television and understood. Seinfeld conclusion sucked and still does and Seinfeld & Larry David agreed in the "Curb" reunion episodes.....BTW Spolier Alert: Kevin Arnold doesn't marry Winnie Cooper!....but "HIMYM" hoped that perhaps it's viewers could see maturely the progression of real life through friendship, lost loves, divorce, birth and death.......

To know that the creators knew success or fail after season one to film the finale kids scene 8 years ago shows the direct course they were always going to take, I applaud them for not changing course due to what I would have taken as caving into "audience reaction or demand" if he didn't wind up with Robin. Watch the pilot again, the turns it took was because of it's success and its long 9 year run. But in actual time Ted told the story to his near adult children in maybe 3 weeks in future year 2030, six years after the death of their beloved mother.

C'mon people were we watching the same series? Barney marries Robin and they live happily ever after? As another poster pointed out it was called "HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER" not "MARRIED". I could write 1000 more words on the unique depth of this entire series and the responses would be so OFF TOPIC as i read threads like "Why Alice did something on "The Brady Bunch" in 1969!

I am 51, have known with friends and family all what was displayed in the series & finale.......I have loved a woman with all my heart while still having feelings for a special 24 year female friend/relationship.....BTW....she now has cancer, tho in the series I know the illness was not specified......

It clearly showed Ted didn't settle, he would have lived happily ever after with Tracy, but finally a sitcom took a dramatic turn and showed life for what it is.....a wonderful Magical Mystery Tour filled with laughs, tears, shock, loss, and 100+ other words.

In another thread Barney was blasted for having a new playbook in his 40's....did you miss the part how his maturity grew the moment he held his baby? no playbook mentioned ever again.

Dare I suggest that the average viewer that felt robbed, has not lived enough of life yet?

John Lennon wrote the following in three different songs before he was murdered on his way home to put his five year old son to bed in 1980 for those too young to know all the pivitol historical moments of popular culture......

........"Life is what happens while your making other plans"
........"Living is easy with eyes closed misunderstanding all you see"
........"Why in the world are we here?, certainly not to live in pain and fear"

As George Harrison's seldom known 1970 song "Let It Roll" was used several times during the series, I will quote his lyrics from another one of his compositions......."That is all I Have to say"

One more "And in the end the love you take, is equal to the love you make"

Beautiful.
(and thanks for quoting from a post of mine).

So great the 3 John Lennon quote.
Maybe one has to be a dreamer or a romantic. I am glad I am.
I am glad How I met your mother was indeed a show about SOMETHING,
and not about nothing.
Ted and Robin both grew and matured.

"You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one"(c) John Lennon Imagine.

and Ted and Robin have reminded me of this song-

"True Love" Bing Crosby/Grace Kelly (c)from High Society
(later sung in a rarely heard version by Elton John/Kiki Dee)

"Suntanned, windblown
Honeymooners at last alone
Feeling far above par
Oh, how lucky we are

While I give to you and you give to me
True love, true love
So on and on it will always be
True love, true love

For you and I have a guardian angel
On high, with nothing to do
But to give to you and to give to me
Love forever true

For you and I have a guardian angel
On high, with nothin' to do
But to give to you and to give to me
Love forever true
Love forever true"

And I beautifully thank you so sincerely "Ohmrwilson" (BTW Love the classics especially DTM) as I don't need people to agree with me, but I had lost faith over the years of any intelligent discussions or debate. I so appreciate you understanding my thoughts, the connection to life and music, restoring my faith in posting as it only takes one and yours after years of "No Replies" (you get the pun & the meaning of the series) the best response I have ever gotten in years of what I called "Personal Opinion Essays" at times.

Also just an FYI, George Harrison actually also recorded and made a video to "True Love" as it appears on his 1976 album "Thirty Three & 1/3".

Now you have given me the inspiration to entirely repost the only other two posts I ever wrote about "HIMYM", if readers/posters don't believe me just check as they are achived....So in the tradition of "HIMYM" I give you actual posts about the future from the past!

Written & posted July 2011.......

"I wish I could remember the title of the episode, I was watching the other night on WGN, In the episode that Ted & Barney pretend to be out of towners to pick up women, in the opening when he is talking to his kids on the couch in the future he says...."You know kids when you go to New York and there is so much to see"

I thought wait a minute, he is always referring to the gang as Aunt Robin, Aunt Lily, Uncle Marshall, etc....and how they seem to still be together for life in the future......so why would he describe New York to his children?....the whole gang would then have to have left their precious NYC in the future, which seems highly unlikely.

I love the series, but I think it ending after season 8 is a good idea, we are attached to these characters and I think by the time we find out who the mother is, we won't care or have the same emotional attachment.

He really should marry Robin and I am hoping she has some type of twin sister or something, so that would be the Aunt Robin he is always referring to....also I still maintain if he doesn't marry Robin (which is unlikely), why am I the only one who seems to think that this older man/father in his late 50's is explaining in great detail to his children how close he came to marrying "Aunt Robin" and all the other sexual conquests he had before, who really discusses this stuff with their kids? Usually kids don't even think about their own parents having sex, let alone all the people their share holidays with and consider them family.

Anyway, with 8 years of story telling, I think there will be alot of mistakes like the one I mentioned once we find out who he marries.

I know I am over thinking this...lol"

Written and posted December 2011

"They have been dropping hints for years that viewers keep missing, I wrote a thread (as usual no replies or the next subject was off-topic)...going back to an episode from two years ago (it is somewhere on this board)...there is an episode where Ted says to his kids at the beginning "You know when you go to New York and there is so much to see?".....well then obviously they all move out of NYC...he wouldn't say that to his kids if they lived in the city....too much has been made of Ted's dislike of New Jersey, so the ultimate irony is that is where he winds up with the family and NJ burbs!

This season, Marshall & Lily are obviously going to live in the house......and last night (12/5/11) it was said clearly that Robin & Barney wind up together and maybe even adopt.

for those who didn't sign up for a "soap opera", you picked the wrong show billing itself as a "love story in reverse" from episode 1. And for those who want sitcom antics mixed with the reality of life, Barney is the perfect "cartoon sitcom unreal character", c;mon the man that can't appear in a bad picture?

I think it has been consistent and brillant especially the continuity usage of the George Harrison song "Let It Roll" 3 times so far everytime they show the wedding of what I believe is "Robin & Barney"."

Back to present day 4/2/14
Well the only two posts before the third post I ever wrote regarding the brillant and real life finale and both from the year 2011, obviously it was all speculation on my part and some I got wrong or was off base, but I think all in all, I came pretty close to really getting the meaning of the series and predicting the finale!

So again thanks "Ohmrwilson" you have made my day and justified that there is a section of life paying more attention in living life and the music which "surrounds us all" as the soundtrack of our lives as the world continues to post their every worseless thought or unthought on social media without fulling even coming close to understanding "What Is Life" and how each life can touch another.

I am sure if actual Beatles songs weren't so expensive and controlled by Sony, since the music of George Harrison had been used in the series, the final minutes of the finale would have contained the song "In My Life", if anyone is interested with an open mind read those lyrics as they explain the entire series in a brief under 3 minute song.

"Isn't it a pity, isn't is a shame, how we take each other's love and cause each other pain" George Harrison 1970
