"Jem and the Holograms", the 1980s Hasbro toyline that was also a cartoon, is getting the big-screen treatment.

Jason Blum’s Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun Productions and director Jon M. Chu are teaming up to make the movie, which has been fast-tracked to start production this spring.

Chu, Blum and Scooter Braun announced Thursday on YouTube that they are producing a modern-day live-action reinvention of the cartoon. They also turned to fans of the show and toyline for help in writing music, designing costumes and even casting.

The cartoon ran from 1985 to 1988 and chronicled the adventures of Jerrica Benton and her alter ego, Jem, a singer who fronted a band called The Holograms. Ironically, the show was produced with the involvement of Marvel Productions, who were hoping to replicate the success of G.I. Joe.

According to the producers, Jem is being reimagined "for a whole new generation with themes of being true to who you are in a multitasking, hyperlinked social media age."

Ryan Landels wrote the script, which, per the producers, centers on an orphaned teenage girl who becomes an online recording sensation. She and her sisters embark on a music-driven scavenger hunt -- one that sends them on an adventure across Los Angeles in an attempt to unlock a final message left by her father.

The movie is a change of pace for Blum, who is known for his long line of horror movies including the Paranormal Activity films and Insidious, but it is in Chu’s wheelhouse. Before G.I Joe, he directed Step Up 2: The Streets and Step Up 3D.

He also directed the Justin Bieber concert films Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Justin Bieber’s Believe. On the latter two, he worked with Braun, who is Bieber’s manager.

'Jem and the Holograms' Finds Its Stars (Exclusive)
by Rebecca Ford, Borys Kit

Jem is her name, no one else is the same.

In her first major film role, Nashville actress Aubrey Peeples has been cast as the lead Jem in the live-action Jem and the Holograms film, which is being directed by Jon M. Chu.

The Holograms have also been cast: Stefanie Scott, who starred on Disney's A.N.T. Farm, will play Jem's sister Kimber; Pretty Little Liars actress Aurora Perrineau will play the Holograms' Shana; and The Fosters ' Hayley Kiyoko has been cast as Aja.

Based on the 1980s Hasbro toyline that was also a beloved cartoon, the film will be produced by Jason Blum's Blumhouse Productions, Scooter Braun Productions and Chu. The film has been moving along quite quickly, and is already shooting.

This type should have been applied to Carly Rae Jepsen's "Curiosity" music video, IMO.

Jem and the Holograms Yanked after 2 Disastrous Weeks in Theaters
by Carly Ledbetter - Entertainment Writer, The Huffington Post
11/9/15

Teen movie Jem and the Holograms was essentially declared dead on arrival when it pulled in a measly $1.37 million its opening weekend. Despite wide release, Jem only managed to average about $545 at each of the 2,413 screens showing it.

The movie, based on a 1980s animated series, continued to tank in the week that followed, making about $160 at each theater. Universal decided to pull it from theaters after only two weeks, at which time it had only brought in $2.1 million.

Universal sunk $5 million into the movie, so it's not a huge loss for the studio. But the Jem did manage to rank fourth among the worst opening weekend wide releases since 1982.

"This is unprecedented, and shows just how badly this film flopped," said Jeff Bock, senior box-office analyst at Exhibitor Relations, in an interview with Business Insider. "Not only is it the lowest-grossing debut for a studio film this year, but it's the worst all-time -- by a considerable margin -- for any film released in 2,000-plus theaters."

hopefully this puts a tainted image in Hollywood's eyes for all stupid remakes for awhile

- and that goes double that has anything to do with Scooter Braun.

The makeup is just awful. They look like KISS rejects. The only good thing that came out of this for me is that I was able to get the original complete series at Sam's Club for $20.

Considering remakes have been around as long as Hollywood, I kinda doubt Hollywood will stop anytime soon.
