A spokesman for the family of comedian David Brenner says the "Tonight Show" favorite has died. He was 78.

Brenner died Saturday afternoon at his home in New York City, said Jeff Abraham, who was Brenner's publicist.

The gangly, toothy Brenner made more than 150 appearances as a guest and substitute host on Johnny Carson's "Tonight Show," starting in the 1970s.

His "Tonight" exposure turned the former documentary filmmaker into a hot comedian. Brenner was a regular on other TV talk shows and game shows and starred in four HBO comedy specials. He also briefly hosted his own syndicated talk show in 1987.

Brenner continued to work steadily doing standup shows. A four-day gig last December included a New Year's Eve show at a casino-resort in King of Prussia, Pa.

Rest in peace David.
I enjoyed him for decades.
Always a great moment when he was a guest host on Carson (or just performing.)

Without him, no Seinfeld, and no one who followed Seinfeld.

Never quite got his due that he was deserving of, and came around a little too early to reap the Seinfeld/Adam Sandler/Kevin James big money on tv shows.

Also didn't realize he was 78. He seemed like he was only in his early 60s with his youthful appearance and attitude. One of the good guys.

I was fortunate to have seen David Brenner in concert at the Golden Nugget hotel in Las Vegas in 1999. It was my first trip to Vegas as well.

Another touchstone of my childhood in the 70's passes. He was so big for a while, at least on the Tonight Show, then it seems like he was out of the limelight for most of the 90's and beyond. Funny, smart, creative guy; never quite achieved the acclaim I think he deserved.

RIP

A few years ago, I found out that David Brenner was supposed to have starred in a sitcom on NBC titled Snip in the fall of 1976, but it never aired because NBC feared reaction to an openly-gay character as a series regular.

IIRC he also did a commercial for Glad sandwich and/or trash bags circa 1976 in which costumers referred to him as "The Man From Glad".
