Speaking of loading VHS machines, I love the top-loading ones from early in their lifespan.

I don't think the location of the compartment for the videotape on a VCR would make any difference to the quality of the recording playing. Interesting to see a sideways loading one though. I have seen the top-loading ones- those are cool. You can find them at thrift stores sometimes- and you can see them in action in a number of 1980s movies and TV shows typically. (At least the early '80s- by the late '80s, the standard VCR seemed to be more common. The 3rd. and 4th. season intro for ALF features a standard loading VCR, for instance.)

The very first VCR my family bought back in 1981 was a top loader. Probably one of the best VCR's I've ever seen, it was handed down to my oldest sister in the 90's and lasted in to the early 2000's.

A small black and white TV we used to have also had a fine tuning knob.... (It also worked well for that purpose :))
