View Full Version : Adult Swim Renews Black Jesus for 2nd Season
JamesG 03-10-2014, 09:29 PM Adult Swim Picks Up "Black Jesus" Series from "The Boondocks" Creator

Jesus is returning to the small screen, and we're not talking about the upcoming sequel to The Bible (not yet, anyways). Adult Swim has ordered a new live-action comedy called "Black Jesus" from "The Boondocks" creator Aaron McGruder, Cartoon Network announced Monday.
Production has already started, and "Black Jesus" will premiere later this year.
In "Black Jesus", the son of Christ is living in present day Compton, Calif., and is on a daily mission to spread love and kindness in the notoriously rough neighborhood with the help of his small, but loyal group of downtrodden followers.
Newcomer Gerald "Slink" Johnson (Grand Theft Auto V) will portray Black Jesus in the series, which also stars Charlie Murphy (Are We There Yet), Corey Holcomb (The Cleveland Show), and John Witherspoon (The Boondocks).
McGruder will serve as executive producer on the comedy with Mike Clattenburg (Trailer Park Boys), Norman Aladjem and John Bravakis (The Half Hour).

ohmrwilson 03-10-2014, 10:46 PM I look forward to watching it.
Was reading his daily political cartoon long before it was an animated tv show.
and, like Norman Lear, who also never was shy about controversial issues, he is sure to make for interesting conversation after each of his shows run.
MacLeaper 03-11-2014, 12:55 PM Hmmm- another sacreligious show. I'm not really surprised. I'm definitely not interested in this one.
Jesus doesn't have a son; He is God the Son, who makes up the Holy Trinity along with God The Father and God The Holy Spirit.
And we don't really know for sure what His complexion was when He was on earth, but most likely He looked like anyone else from the Mediterranean area- He was a Jew and not necessarily handsome as He's depicted sometimes. Isaiah 53:2 says Jesus had no beauty or majest to attract us to Him and nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him. (But He desires us and He came to bring everyone of all races, nations, tribes and tongues to Himself in Heaven through His death and Resurrection.)
So Jesus most likely wasn't white as He's portrayed sometimes and He also most likely wasn't black as He's portrayed at times too. But it doesn't really matter- He's for all people.
I'd rather see a show depicting Jesus in a respectful tone, but "The Bible" has done that fairly well recently already. (Though even that wasn't really totally accurate to the Scriptures- but it's still a lot better than this show sounds like it will be.)
Or why not have the main character be a follower of Christ in the present day who's truly seeking to live out a life of faith in Christ, characterized by walking as Jesus did and loving God with everything and loving his neighbor as himself? Of course, hopefully the world doesn't need a TV show to see that- it should be evident in real life through the lives of all who claim the Name of Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
ThomasE 03-18-2014, 01:40 AM Well said, Mac Leaper! Well said, brother.
king of comedy 03-18-2014, 07:29 AM From the way it sounds, it would look better as an animated sitcom.
SitcomsOffline 03-18-2014, 09:57 AM So no wonder it has taken 4 years for the upcoming season of "The Boondocks" to be premiere..
ThomasE 03-18-2014, 10:24 AM I wondered why it took four years for the next season to start. I've seen all of season one. Some of season two and three. I think that I may binge to catch up on all the episodes.
loaferman 03-18-2014, 12:50 PM I'm sure a show mocking Islam is in the works since that last cartoon they did worked out so well. They can air this "Jesus" show in betwen that and the show mocking Jewish people.
Not that either of those will ever happen.

Thank you, sir.:)
ThomasE 03-18-2014, 05:14 PM I do wanna she how this show will work. We will see what happens. I'd rather watch Boondocks, though.

Great picture. The Boondocks is coming back in April.
James28 03-22-2014, 01:36 AM It has been announced that the fourth season of The Boondocks, to premiere on April 21 on Adult Swim, will be the final season. The upcoming season was actually produced without the involvement of its creator, Aaron McGruder, when a mutually agreeable production schedule could not be determined.
The Boondocks has actually been released at a gradual pace, with a two- to four-year gap between seasons.
king of comedy 03-22-2014, 06:08 AM I wish it would go for 2 more years.
James28 03-25-2014, 11:25 PM ^^Except that no one likes a scripted TV show with excessively long gaps between seasons (1 year or more).
JamesG 07-24-2014, 12:23 PM Christian Groups Blast Adult Swim’s "Black Jesus", To Surprise of No One

Cartoon Network hit the motherlode this morning when American Family Association and its One Million Moms division finally weighed in on the net’s “blasphemous” new show, "Black Jesus", just days before its debut.
The depiction of Jesus swearing and “using violent behavior is a new low,” the org cried.
The group notes it’s a late-night show that’s part of Adult Swim, but took issue that it portrays Jesus as a “black guy living in the hood.”
“The blasphemous, irreverent and disrespectful show depicts him living in Compton Gardens and makes a mockery of the Lord,” the group said.
Adult Swim was looking to stir a debate back in March when it gave a series order to "Black Jesus", a half-hour live-action scripted comedy from "The Boondocks" creator Aaron McGruder.
Newcomer Gerald “Slink” Johnson (Grand Theft Auto V) stars as Jesus living in present-day Compton, CA, who’s on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.
The series pickup for "Black Jesus" came on the heels of the Jesus race controversy triggered by Fox News star Megyn Kelley’s recent “Jesus is white” comments.
AFA noted helpfully today that Cartoon Network has “posted on You Tube a trailer for the show, which debuts August 7.”
Its “frequent foul language in the trailer alone is shocking and disgusting. In addition, violence, gunfire, drinking and other inappropriate behavior completely misrepresent Jesus.”
“The garbage that passes for entertainment continues to disturb us,” AFA President Tim Wildmon weighed in. “Even the three-minute trailer was too vile to watch, with multiple uses of the f-word by the actor portraying ‘Black Jesus.’ Christians and anyone who believes in respecting faith must come together to make sure this program never airs.”
Yesterday, One Million Moms Director Monica Cole sent an email alert about Adult Swim’s “plans to blaspheme Jesus on a weekly basis” in which she too, noted Adult Swim is obviously not a family network, and this program is set to air later in the evening “when children should be asleep”.
“But that is no excuse,” she added quickly. “Adult Swim has crossed the line by belittling the Christian religion with foul jokes.”
Madame Noire — the lifestyle site geared towards African-American women – couldn’t be happier.
“If it looks or sounds familiar that is because Black Jesus was part of the popular The Super Rumble Mix Show comedy shorts, which ran online between seasons of The Boondocks a few years back,” says a post on the site that’s headlined "This Is Why I’m Excited About Black Jesus".
“I’m really excited about this series not just because of the already budding controversy about using the Lord’s name and images in such a blasphemous manner – although that will be fun. But because every time something happens in Black America, I think about how I can’t wait until McGruder gives his critique of it on The Boondocks – and then I get bummed out when I remember that The Boondocks is not even an option now.”

MrCleveland 07-24-2014, 12:40 PM People...if you think a show is just TOO blasphemous...don't watch it!
Plain simple...John 1:10...Jesus was in the world yet the world is STILL misunderstood about him!
king of comedy 07-24-2014, 02:49 PM I saw the trailer and it looks stupid. I'm not going to bother it.
UMFaninMD 07-24-2014, 07:26 PM I think most Christians should just stop trying to boycott or have something banned whenever it doesn't fit their beliefs, and do the simple and easy thing and don't watch whatever offends them without always trying to force it away for everyone else. I don't think this show is going to have a long shelf-life anyway.

:yeahthat
And if a show offends anyone throughout race, creed, or preferences...don't watch it...then the point will be prooved!
Mr. Television 07-24-2014, 09:44 PM It looks disgusting.
Patty Duke 07-25-2014, 11:28 AM I dislike what I consider sacrilegious shows. Jesus was a Jew. Period.
