View Full Version : Crock Pot
Janice 03-10-2014, 05:16 PM I used a crock pot years ago when I was working, but was never comfortable leaving it on all day when I wasn't there. I bought one last week to use while I'm home.
Yesterday, I made a pot roast that was just delicious. So easy, everything gets tossed in, and eight hours later, a great dinner.
I bought a cookbook with recipes for the crock pot. Just the kind I like, the recipes are on one page. They don't involve 20 steps or 36 rare spices per dish. And there's a picture of the finished product. Next up, I plan on making my husband spareribs and then pea soup with ham.
Anyone here use a crock pot?
treky 03-10-2014, 06:16 PM yes, my brother does sometimes. (he does all our cooking-and cleans upAND does the dishes AND handles the household expenses AND pays my bills and his AND handles our bank accounts AND takes care of any problems we may run into with matenence etc.AND drives me to doctors etc.....like my sister-in-law said; he's the "unsung hero" of our family!:) ) anyway, he makes chili, stew, and tomato sauce in it.

Glad you're enjoying the new crock pot. I mainly use mine for chili, home-made soup & beef stew. I may pick up a cookbook to see what else I can use it for.
My mom uses one when ever we have a potluck at church. She makes a broccoli cheesy rice thing. It always goes over really well, usually there is nothing left.
robyrob 03-10-2014, 08:49 PM i use mine all the time - roast beef (always awesome in there), chicken and dumplings, pork loin roast with sauerkraut, shredded chicken for tacos/enchiladas or other Mexican-inspired meals, chili, stews, pork chops, stroganoff, meatballs, risoto, there are just so many things you can do with it.
Regulus 03-10-2014, 10:18 PM I use my crock pot to make what I call "The best leftover-killer on the planet" The National Food of Brazil, Feijoada! :liplick:
Family Ties Forever! 03-10-2014, 10:28 PM Your crock pot sounds great Janice. :)
My mother used to have one and used it. I don't know if she still has one or not.
ponytail 03-11-2014, 06:07 AM Crock pots are great. Making chili in the winter and in the summer we try not to use the oven so much so the crock pot comes in handy.

Yum, that sounds good! This is making me hungry!
My mom has a crock-pot that she uses mostly for pot roast and any kind of beans. Growing up in the south, of course, all beans have to be slow-cooked with hog jowl.
Penny Lane 03-11-2014, 10:08 AM We use ours all of the time! It's great!:)
Janice 03-11-2014, 02:06 PM The one I bought has an auto-stirrer, which stirs the pot every 30 minutes. That's not for roasts or anything or course. I think it will be a handy feature for soups, stews, chili, etc. I also bought crock pot liners to make cleanup easier. Not sure I want to use those though. From the sound of these posts, I'm glad I bought the crock pot.
MrCleveland 03-11-2014, 02:28 PM I use a crock pot for chili, spaghetti sauce, pork and sauerkraut, and corned beef and cabbage.

Your avatar is so cute Janice. :)
Retro4Life 03-11-2014, 07:09 PM My mom and dad used to use one all the time. I wish I could, too, but as I live alone, there's no way I can leave the house to go to work and leave the pot on.
I used to love eating roasts and such out of it; you're right, they were absolutely delicious.

Thanks Jenny. Same for yours; it's adorable. :)
Janice 04-27-2014, 05:13 PM I haven't used my new crock pot as much as I thought I would, but everything I cooked in it so far has came out fantastic. Corn beef and cabbage, dee*lish. Same goes for the pot roast. It's amazing to me how the all the veggies come out perfect; same as the meat.
I have sauce with meatballs and sausage going now. It's great not having to stir the sauce constantly. I browned the meat in the oven first. It's cooking for seven hours. I also want to make split pea soup with ham. That was one of my mother's signature dishes and my husband loved it. I also want to make honey flavored spareribs.
I bought a crock pot cookbook the day I bought the crock pot. It has some nice recipes, but I like this website. It has videos showing how the food is cooked.

Family Ties Forever! 04-27-2014, 06:24 PM That's great that the crock pot is work so well Janice. :) Enjoy your dinner tonight. :)
Coffeecup 05-02-2014, 04:59 PM My folks had one decades ago. I can still see the brown interior. They used it off and on. More times they didn't. I always felt that cooking something so darn long used so much electricity. Does it?? My brother bought a new one, this one with a silver interior and cooked a pot roast. Haven't used the thing since. I guess I should try it again.
Hawkee 04-01-2018, 07:14 AM My mom used Rival Crock-Pots whenever we would cook dinner but when we bought the pressure cooker the Crock-Pot was put away and now she collects them. Mom got our first Crock-Pot from my godmother because she loved to cook and the second Crock-Pot we used to use came from my great-grandmother and came with a cookbook too and it was so great. It's surprising that cooking has become more advanced now and I can tell you that Crock-Pots will be collectors items now

IllinoisTVFan 04-01-2018, 04:39 PM What a great thread! I love my Crock Pot, I often put several things in there, cook for hours, then fantastic. I use it often for spaghetti, chili and roast beef.
