View Full Version : 2 reasons why this show should no longer be in syndication
TVFactFan 03-07-2014, 11:57 PM 1. Edith dies
2. Mike and Gloria splits
So those two things don't need to be reveal to new fans of All in the Family since it would make the original show kind of pointless when you find out the marriage of mike and gloria doesn't last and that edith dies later on. These are 2 things that don't need to be mention and the new fans can just enjoy All in the family.
Seeing Mike and Gloria patch things up in season 9 along with Archie and Edith laying in bed together in the last episode should be how the All in the Family existence is remembered

All in the Family is one of the single most realistic sit-coms of all time.
People are born to die, and the show realistically moved ahead after Edith's portrayer no longer wanted to be in the show (by the way, 100s of actors have done the same, some had their characters killed so they can't come back.
IF as they say Hans Solo will be killed in the second of the coming third trilogy, should that mean no one will ever watch the first again?
As for divorce, don't they say 50% of those married get divorced or separated?
Fairy tales are not what Norman Lear was thinking when he made All in the Family/Archie's Place. And his audience respected that I think.

I know people die but ABP was so unrelated to AITF that it should only be seen on youtube or DVD

AfterMASH, Golden Palace after Maude.
Most sitcoms don't work sequel wise, but Archie owning a bar was perfect, though I agree the child (Danielle) could have been done without, but she was there for a reason.
Archie was still Archie, he had to do something with his life.
I like the Ropers and the Too CLose for Comfort sequels.
The sole reason for the stars of TV Lands brand new shows is to gently put the older stars back on tv in a comfort zone new show.
I like Kirstie and the Ex's, and am looking forward for the news season
of Cedric and the other one(with Betty White, drawing a blank on name).
It was nice to have Carrol OConnor still on tv.
Though not as great as AITF, it was still nice for him to be Archie.

Since it was a series with archie alone with a new family I think it should be blocked from syndication
Same way people who love Three'e company don't need to watch Three's a crowd

well, a simple answer is- when those episodes are on, don't watch, and wait for the regular episodes shortly to follow.
For one thing, I am sure the supporting cast and guest stars like having their residual checks for the reruns, and its always nice to see a good character actor in a guest role (that applies to any shows-
half the fun of watching old detective shoes are the guest stars
What a hoot to see Clint Eastwood on Mr. Ed.
Or to see Farrah on Harry-O giving Harry (David Janssen) a "cup of sugar"
Or Jodie Foster or her brother in countless guest roles before Jodie did movies and won awards.

The fact that it's revealed that Mike ran off with a younger woman on ABP is the main reason why it shouldn't be on
ThomasE 03-10-2014, 02:57 AM I say keep it. Although it messes with the viewers happier image of the family, it is still a reality. It's just the show became more watered down as the years went on. After early 1981, it just became boring. I still vote for the show to be syndication so others can see it just like most of us have.

Are you going to upload Gloria on Youtube?
ThomasE 03-10-2014, 10:48 PM Not at the moment as I don't have the right tools to convert. The Quality is jumpy on VHS and I need a 4 head VCR for smoother playback.

Nah, Solomon. You deserve the best. I just would not feel right sending a jumpy, tracking quality ep of that show to you. It would be an abomination.
lucyandethel 03-12-2014, 08:56 PM I just wasn't a fan of ABP. O'Connor seemed to either be drunk or half asleep as Archie Bunker. Plus, ABP was not shot before a live audience, and the timing was off. The only thing that saved the show for 4 years was where it was on the CBS schedule. It was on Sunday nights in the early 1980s surrounded by "The Jeffersons" and "Alice" which boosted the ratings. But it wasn't a good show really.

It wasn't surrounded by anything, it was the LEAD IN on sunday nights
mets82 03-13-2014, 03:02 PM I'd watch ABP just because it hasn't been on in syndication in what seems like forever. If anything, there are many shows that shouldn't be in syndication just because they've been on and seen for a about a billion times. ABP isn't one of them.
WalterTheDrinker 07-01-2014, 08:36 AM I don't think you understand why shows go into syndication and why reruns of the same show are broadcast for years and decades. Shows are put on TV to pull viewers and sell advertising. That's it. Nothing more.
Archie Bunker's Place shouldn't be broadcast because it stinks.
And how does knowing what eventually happens to the characters have any effect on how you enjoy reruns of the best episodes? If the episode is on in which Archie and Mike bet about who can go longer without smoking a cigar or eating, I'm going to tune in because it's funny. I'm not going to think, "Well, Mike divorces Gloria, so what's the point of watching?"

I don't think newer generations who watch All in the Family on Antenna TV should know
Edith Dies
Mike leaves Gloria

I thought 60 minutes was the Lead In on Sunday nights?
TVFactFan 07-16-2014, 10:11 PM I thought 60 minutes was the Lead In on Sunday nights?
60 mins...........7pm
ABP.................8pm
60 mins...........7pm
ABP.................8pm
Back then, anything following 60 Minutes was going to be watched by a lot of people. ABP probably only did last for 4 years due to its cushy timeslot.
It's interesting how back in the late 70s/early 80s Sunday night was CBS's highest-rated night and Tuesdays were ABC's highest-rated night, but once those hit shows started to lose steam those networks weren't able to replace them with other hits to keep their respective nights, but NBC for about 20 years managed to hold on to Thursday evenings from the mid-80s to the mid-00s.....
Of all the networks who could control a night of television for so long it's really odd NBC was able to do it but The Tiffany Network CBS wasn't.
Another thing about CBS on Sunday nights.....I was born too late to watch those shows at the time in their full glory. I grew up in the Early-mid 90s when ABC, NBC and CBS really weren't showing ANY sitcoms on Sunday. All the good shows were on Fox on Sunday nights and we couldn't get the affiliate locally until 1994 or so. It sure would have been nice to have seen ABP/One Day At a Time/Alice/The Jeffersons on a Sunday night in 1993 instead of crappy old Murder She Wrote and a movie!
Just a couple of observations.

I doubt if most of the country waited for a hour to watch whatever came on at 8pm on sunday nights

I don't understand your point. People tuned in to watch 60 Minutes, as it was pretty much always rated higher than whatever followed it, but whatever followed it usually did very well in the ratings too. 60 Minutes was the anchor the network built other shows around on Sunday night. What I'm really saying is I would have preferred CBS stuck with following 60 Minutes with sitcoms from the mid-80s through the 90s instead of stuff like "Murder She Wrote". I just remember Sunday night television being very boring in the early 90s. Sitcoms would have livened things up.

Looks like you were right, it stayed in the top ten all through the 1980's

Yep. No way "Murder She Wrote" would have lasted 12 seasons or whatever were it not in that cushy time slot. "Murder She Wrote" SO VERY MUCH did not deserve to follow "60 Minutes" for as long as it did! A good sitcom could have done just as well if not better in that time period!

I take it back. It looks like CBS continued to do very well on Sundays throughout the 80s due to "Murder She Wrote" following "60 Minutes". I guess I'm just sick that the viewing public would have rather watched a bunch of old farts on MSW instead of a sitcom, but oh well.

Archie Bunker's Place had a short run on TV Land in 2002 and 2003
Mr. Television 07-25-2014, 08:48 PM It was also on WGN for a few years in the 1980's. It was on weekday mornings.
Laftrak 08-15-2014, 05:53 AM I think Archie Bunker's Place should be part of the syndication package because it's basically seasons 10 through 13 of All in the Family, just with a different title. It has all the same characters as season 9. I was hoping AntennaTV would show it, but no, they went back to the beginning.
They could put Gloria in the rotation too at the appropriate time like they do with The Ropers spinoff of Three's Company. She's part of the core cast, so her storyline fits in with the rest.
I agree that Edith dying and Mike and Gloria splitting up is a bummer, but those are the stories the writers chose for those characters, so there's nothing we can do about it.

Since that is the case then it should only be seen on DVD. It's ok for Three's a Crowd to be shown because Jack didn't die or break up with vicky plus it didn't last that long
ABP was on the air for almost 5 years so it doesn't need to be in syndication due to the depressing ep of edith and gloria being dumped
ThomasE 08-16-2014, 06:35 PM It should be in syndication rotation. Just because there were some trippy moments does not mean that it should disqualified. There are other shows that have had some veeeery sad moments as well and they ended up making syndication.

Just seem like it would make it hard for people to watch AITF if they knew what the end result was for Edith and Gloria
BigManMike 08-16-2014, 09:06 PM I've never seen this show but it is one that I would really like to see. I know sme episodes are depressing and are more dramatic then comedic but I still would like to see what happens to them later on. I hope Antenna TV will get this show in 2015.

Wonder why no one sent a follow up question and asked WHY NOT?
Aticineto 03-27-2015, 02:26 PM Just my opinion, but I don't think the events in ABP (Edith's death and Mike leaving Gloria) take away from the enjoyment of All in the Family. As has been pointed out - it added realism, as people die, and half of marriage end in divorce. I've been watching episodes of ABP on YouTube, and while its not the same as AITF (and Archie has mellowed a lot), it is still enjoyable to an old-time fan like myself. I watched the original run of AITF, but only watched ABP occasionally back then.

ABP really doesn't need to be in syndication because no close out episode

IGNTBone 08-31-2015, 04:21 PM It's on FamilyNet starting today (Monday Aug. 31st) at 5-6 pm weekdays.
JoshLarson24 09-24-2015, 08:17 AM We could say the same things about Empty Nest and Small Wonder. Neither show was that good but they are back in syndication. I personally find myself liking both shows a lot more than it did when they were originally airing.
Syndication is a magical gift to shows that were not really rated well by viewers or just downright bad to begin with.
Shows I hated the first time around I am actually loving in syndication because I see them differently as time goes on.
