She loved her some men folk. She be locking her doors, shining men's shoes, unplugging her TV to get the repair men to stay. That was a man hungry lady. She was also one of my favorite side characters. Mary Wickes played that role with excellence. I also loved her work in "Julia" and the "Sister Act" Movies. Funny Lady.

Mary Wickes was hilarious. I wish she would have been in more episodes.
I always wondered what she did! Maybe she was well taken care of by old money.

I loved that character. She was refreshingly funny and neutral. Mary Wickes was great in the role. She was funny as heck.

By far the best recurring character on the series! Beautiful dreamer wake unto me, starlight and dew drops are waiting for thee! A real life lesbian apparently. Quite the opposite of her role.

How do you know that she was a lesbian?

It's the strangest thing. There was an allusion to it on wikipedia but as I checked just this minute it's not there. If I recall correctly her partner was Abby something.

This could be all rumor for all I know.

Hmmmm.....I guess that will be some mindless trivia for us to investigate. LOL. As a kid watching this show, she was such a comic relief. I loved how she sang that song that you referenced in the episode about the starlings flying off when they heard her voice. She also broke George's eye glasses! Hilarious!!!

Yes, this lady did not play hard to get at all! She let the men KNOW she was in the market for a husband !

She was funny. One of my favorite characters on the show. ;)

I always remember her as the nosy housekeeper in "White Christmas".

Mary Wickes was also in Make Room for Daddy, as Danny's press agent Liz O'Neill. The kids (Rusty and Terry) called her Aunt Liz. I seem to remember her appearing in many episodes in season 4--the first one after Jean Hagen (Margaret's ) departure. Not sure if she was in the show prior to season 4. I will check the videos on You Tube..

On Danny Thomas, Wiki says she was on from 1953-1964, but in reality she disappeared after a few episodes in season 5. I do remember her being in several of the Jean Hagen episodes, seasons 1 thru 3. She had tons of roles in TV and movies. I thought she played Josephine the plumber in commercials but I checked and that was Jane Withers.

Esther Cathcart was one of her most memorable roles. One particularly funny episode was when she was competing for the affections of the cop, Sgt. Mooney, and her competition, Miss Tarbell, was played by Alice Pearce (Gladys on Bewitched). When it came to men, Miss Cathcart didn't mess around....well, I guess she did...

I got to talk briefly a few years back with Jeanne Russell and Jay North and they both confirmed that the late Miss Wickes was a wonderful person to work with and be friends with!

In my 'amateur' theatrical career, I played 2 roles that Ms. Wickes plated--the nurse in Th vMan Who Came to Dinner and Mrs. Squies in The Music Man.

The two episodes of the fourth season that feature Esther Cathcart and Lucy Tarbell ("You Go Your Way" and "Jane Butterfield Says") are among my favorites of the whole series. Laugh out loud funny.

The earliest I remember her is as the nurse to Bette Davis' domineering mother in "Now, Voyager".

OH Nuts!

Yup Mary Wickes was a great character actor. Good in everything she did and was a hoot as crazed husband-hunter Miss. Cathcart. I also understand she was a good friend of Lucille Ball’s.
