these season 5 situations????

No mention or reappearance of Fishbone

No mention or reapperance of JJ's friends, awesome foursome

No mention of reapperance of Mrs Bookman

No mention or reapperance of Frank

No mention of Grandpa Evans and Lena since they were married

So none of these stories or characters could be followed up on in season 6 because Esther Rolle returned to the show??? I mean out of the list Grandpa Evans could have made one last appearance.

Why would they mention them if they weren't regulars? Especially Frank, Fishbone and Mrs. Bookman. Grandpa I understand

Didn't JJ's friends still live in chicago???

Frank and Willona were kinda sorta but not really engaged  I believe they were working on their relationship. And JJ's friends were only in what? 2 episodes? So why would we hear from them in season 6? I could see if they were regulars from season 1 or even season 2.

Why did the show have to be all about Florida in season 6? That's why people stopped watching. because she returned, all of a sudden

Willona no longer had a man
JJ no longer had a job
Thelma no longer had a way out of the projects
Keith no longer headed to the NFL

So all that because of the return of Florida evans

All of season 6 was not about Flo, only a few episodes had her as the semi main focus. In a few episodes she wasn't even seen. And in season 1-5 how did Thelma have a way out of the projects? Did I miss some episodes? Did she come into a windfall? Did she have a high paying job? I will not even address the Keith nonsense. Now you're just pulling stuff out of your butt.

To me, those things were irrelevant(especially fishbone). It did not hurt the show at all. It would have been nice to see Mrs, B (No pun) or Grandpa but it would not have helped the ratings in the last season. It had already been damaged from Esther Rolle's departure.

No it was damaged because

1. JJ was no longer employed after being a Art Executive in season 5

2. Thelma looked like she was going to be married and living in a nice neighborhood but keith breaks his leg and has no NFL contract

So everything seemed to go backward and people at the time was probably like....,"f*ck this show" I'm done

No...the damage started way before that. That's why in part Esther was asked to return. At least with her there, the show ended nicely.

well that damaged came from adding a 10 year kid to the show when they could have focused more on

JJ's career development and love life
Michael's educational progress and love life
Thelma's educational progress and love life
Willona's Love life and job

Why add a kid to the show like that was going to change the ratings?

I agree, But I have to admit I wasn't to fun of the Grandpa episodes, they were like filler episodes. But he could have showed up for Thelma's wedding or afterwards to meet Keith. Let's be truthful, the damage was done when John left the show.

I was just saying that to myself before reading this. John left, then Esther left, then they tried giving control to Janet DuBois then added a child to the show. They were trying to make things work but it just didn't gel. A caucasian friend of mine in his 50's recalls enjoying the show back in the 70's and kinda stopped watching in season five with all the changes that took place.

Regarding the numbers, the show's ratings fell because it didn't even air the entire year which caused the numbers to be low.

In comparison to previous seasons, it was very bad and it dropped to #53 because the elements that helped to define the show (ie Esther Rolle) were gone. It was too little too late by the time she came back but I am glad she did to help complete the show out the way it should have.

Esther's coming back to the show did not cause it to fall in the ratings. In fact, it would have looked bad in retrospect if she hadn't. It was wise for the producers to woo her back. Besides, Maude had a low rated final season. These two shows ran their course.

Yes it was way better than season 4. Season 4 for me seemed awkward, the addition of Carl didn't fit in, they tried to replace John and it did not work. There were episodes that weren't needed, it was like the writers were on vacation and they just wrote anything just to have a show air. There are a few episodes that I like in season 4.

The whole episode was about how Michael couldn't get up enough never to talk to a girl. It is a boring episode to me, nothing at all funny. I could see if the episode was about Michael going on his first date and it showed him and the girl going to the movies and out to eat or some kind of mishap happening, that would have been more entertaining.

I didn't know that as a public employee you can be reported for wrong doing and once they got all my information I was reported to the city and ended up being fired.
