I have my laptop on a desk in my bedroom. It's a heavy computer, not the type to lug around. I plug it in until it gets recharged to 100%. I then unplug it until I get a prompt telling me to plug it in.

I'd love to leave it plugged in, but I've heard/read that it's big no-no. It's kind of a pain in the neck having to keep plugging and unplugging it. Do I have any other choices?

I've had my laptop for about, 5 years now, and I never take it anywhere, So I keep it plugged in all the time.

Check the power options, you can use your laptop powered strictly off of AC power, instead of battery power, that's what I do.

Usually, when the AC adaptor is removed, the laptop then switches to battery power.

leaving it plugged in all the time will not hurt your laptop.

- however - it will affect your battery; laptop batteries will develop a "memory" over time, which will affect how well the battery retains a charge and how long it will last on a single charge.

as long as you regularly use the battery and periodically calibrate the battery with whatever maintenance routine the manufacturer recommends, you will be fine. And by "regularly" I mean once or twice a week, and by "periodically" I mean maybe once or twice a year.

most batteries will need to be replaced after about five or six years no matter how well you take care of it anyways.

the biggest danger involved in leaving it plugged in all the time is in damaging the pin or port where the cord plugs in, in many cases a simple bump can cause a very costly repair.

You could also just remove the battery when you are using the laptop while plugged in, but if you lose power suddenly you lose the protection that your battery gives you against data loss and potential hardware damage.

Mine is plugged in all the time and I haven't had any problems with it.

I'm looking to see if there's a way to just shut it off. I'm going through the manual; it's online. I may call Sony. It's a newer version, so they may be able to help me.

I have an IPOD touch and an Ipad and I wonder at times if you could use them plugged in for say a half hour. I just charge it and use it until it tells me to recharge.

You can, just depends on where you plug it in.

I leave my laptop unplugged for a little while, and then I plug it in. It gets unplugged before I turn it off.

The battery doesnt work in the laptop we have so it stays plugged in because if it doesnt,the time is lost and wifi connection settings..

Im glad I havent had any problems with the battery in my Win98se computer. Its had the same battery for 20 years or more... Doesnt seem to ever lose the time..

I reckon on a desktop the only thing you would lose is the date/time settings if the battery went bad...

I thought most desktops were plugged in.

I keep mine unplugged buddy when im not using it so the battery is called on alot..

I unplug it because the power supply (I think its the PS) interferes with my AM radio (It puts a high pitch tone across the dial)
