I've never seen cheering for anyone like that, unless it was for a spin-off like when Nell appeared in Max's Deli a few episodes later.


Grandpa and Grandma walk in the house in the first minute of the episode and Nell comes out and goes "Hi, folks" and Grandpa goes "Hi, Nell" and then there's a burst of cheers from the audience. I felt that to be very, very inappropriate for the scene.


Now, in season 3, when Nell lost weight, they just go into the episode or episodes without any audience wooing when they first see her...like in Joey Pt 1, which was the first episode taped. She just comes out dancing and there is just normal cheering. Not even any note of her getting thinner. The cheering in "Grandpa Robs A Bank" sounds as if Nell did something that would have made them cheer immediately when she walked out onstage that night. But she was still the same weight she had been the past 2 seasons. Had she slimmed down by this certain episode, it would have been appropriate for the cheering. I think it was just some randoms in the audience that day.

Are you saying that the audience cheered just because Nell appeared on the screen? I never noticed that before. I would have to watch it again to acquaint myself with the situation. I guess it is a little bit like the audience cheering on "Happy Days" when the Fonz appears or the audience cheering on "Laverne and Shirley" when Lenny and Squiggy appear at the door.

Never been to a recording on a show, but it's apparent to me the audience is encouraged to applaud on certain characters entry into a scene.
I bet they have a sign lite up 'Applaud!' when for whatever reason, the directors think it's appropriate for it.
I know what you're saying. I see it as conditioning us, the viewers, to think there's something appealing about this character, rather than just letting it play out and letting us make that call for ourselves.
Watch 2 Broke Girls. Every 1st entry of Sophie per episode is accompanied with a forced applause. It's so obvious.

You should watch The Honeymooners. Each of the four principal characters gets wild applause when appearing for the first time in most episodes.

YES! Sophie! I just thought of that! They cheer for her all the time. But Nell never got any cheers except in that one scene and it wasn't really appropriate for cheers. She wasn't wearing anything drop dead gorgeous, doing anything, just said "Hi, folks" to Grandma and Grandpa. It was her first appearance in the episode, but it wasn't really called for applause like that.
