SAUGERTIES — John Henson, the son of Muppets creator Jim Henson and a Saugerties resident, passed away Friday.

According to a statement on the Jim Henson Company's Facebook page, he died of a sudden heart attack. He was 48. He is survived by his two daughters, Katrina, 15, and Sydney, 10, and his wife Gyongyi.

John Henson was a puppeteer and performer himself for the Muppets, playing the Muppets' ogre Sweetums from the late 1980s until 2005, including in the Muppets movies; he was also a company shareholder and board member.

A private service is being planned.

So sad that he died young, like his father... :(

It's eerie seeing this. He is my age. R.I.P. John. :(

Oh wow- so sad to hear about John Henson passing. It seems the Henson family and company has lost a number of people in recent years... Jerry Nelson and Jane Henson particularly come to mind.

Very sad to hear. :( Jane Henson died almost a year ago and now her son is joining her. John hasn't been muppeteering since 2005, he had a role in the Jim Henson Company (Matt Vogel currently performs Sweetums and will do so in the upcoming Muppet movie). Vogel also does most of the late Jerry Nelson's characters in addition to being an understudy for Carroll Spinney.
