"SVU" Scoop: Alec Baldwin to Play New York Columnist, Katie Couric to Appear
Feb 25, 2014
by Kate Stanhope

Alec Baldwin is sure playing against type for his upcoming guest role on "Law & Order: SVU".

Baldwin, whose casting was revealed last week, will play Jimmy MacArthur, a controversial New York newspaper columnist who questions the SVU squad's motives during the investigation of a potential hate crime/rape case.

Katie Couric will also appear in the episode, the first directed by star Mariska Hargitay, as a talk show host questioning MacArthur about the case.

"I'm thrilled to be directing," Hargitay said in a statement.

"It's been a goal of mine for a long time, and it's quite an experience to see it realized. My respect for the process of making this show and telling these important stories deepens with every scene we shoot. I have always been so honored to work with this cast and crew, but never more so than now, as a director collaborating in a new way.

And I've watched Alec on screen for so long and always hoped we would be able to work together some day. Having the opportunity to tell this story with him, having him bring his experience, depth, truthfulness, and fierce commitment, honestly feels too good to be true."

Added executive producer Warren Leight:

"New York City has had a long history of high profile and controversial newspaper columnists, whose influence extends beyond the newsroom. In our story, 'Jimmy Mac's' reporting interferes with the investigation, which has a ripple effect when the case goes to trial. We couldn't ask for a better actor for Mariska to work with in her directorial debut. Their chemistry on screen is palpable."

The episode is set to air March 19th.

Check Out Alec Baldwin on "Law & Order: SVU"!
by Chris Harnick
3/15/14

Alec Baldwin is returning to scripted TV for the first time since "30 Rock" ended with a role on "Law & Order: SVU", and we have an exclusive sneak peek.

'Criminal Stories' is a very special episode of SVU: It's the first time series star Mariska Hargitay has stepped behind the camera as a director.

Baldwin's appearance has been a long time coming. The former "30 Rock" star is good friends with Hargitay, and the two had been talking about getting him on SVU for some time.

Alec Baldwin said he was gonna leave New York, but he didn't. This is no different from how he said he was gonna leave America if Bush was reelected.

He said he was gonna leave N.Y. for Los Angeles (I live in an L.A. suburb). Tell him that L.A. doesn't want him either! And even the N.Y.P.D. doesn't want him either!

"What is it they say about art imitating life? Well, blowhard Alec Baldwin is really good . . . at playing a jerk,” says the NY Post. That the media-hating actor can play a total tool so well — like the proverbial moth to the flame — in Wednesday night’s episode of 'Law & Order: Special Victims Unit' should surprise no one who has witnessed Baldwin’s public-meltdown act.”
