Well with this and Batman being released (and last year Dobie Gillis), I'm calling it - ANYTHING can come to DVD! There is no show that is impossible to be released on DVD.

TWY will sell more copies than Mama's Family did so I think they'll put more effort into getting most (if not all) music cleared.

I'm not sure I'm going to get this. Sure, it's one of the shows I've talked about a lot here, but I've kind of lost my obsession with the show. I just don't watch TV much anymore. Plus, I want the music retention rate to be 100%--one lost or changed song ruins the whole thing!

This just in, Hell has frozen over! In addition to Batman & The Wonder Yearscoming out on DVD here are a few things we can expect to see in the weeks and months ahead:

Rush Limbaugh will endorse a Democrat for President

The ACLU will defend a kid who invoked a prayer in public school

Brooke Shields will win an Academy Award

The Detroit Lions will win the Super Bowl

All this and more because Hell, Michigan has indeed frozen over.

WOW! I was so ecstatic to see this announced! It will be great to finally have "The Wonder Years" complete on DVD! And it looks like they are taking careful measures to get as many songs secured for the release as possible- that's great news! And especially the iconic theme song- very cool!:)
I think this will do extremely well for Time-Life. So awesome to see this great late '80s show come to DVD.
I loved watching it as a kid- it will be great to be able to see it on DVD again- whether or not all the songs make it or not. I hope and trust most every song will make it- but I'll get over it if not.
I wish Time-Life would take this kind of approach to another music-centric show like WKRP in Cincinnati and get that complete on DVD. (I'd love to see all the music intact, but honestly- I don't think it's that big of a deal if it can't quite happen. I'd rather have something released to DVD than nothing- I love the Season 1 DVD set I've got- I'd love to have the rest of the seasons to add to it.) And to echo an earlier comment, it'd be great to see a complete DVD set for Perfect Strangers too.:)

I have a feeling that there will be some songs missing. I hope I am wrong, but something about that press release makes me think they are already setting us up for some disappointment.

An article someone showed me this morning stated that "almost" all of the songs would be intact, which means that there will be some that are missing. The article didn't mention a percentage or which songs won't be included.

I don't have a link to that article, saw it on someone else's laptop.

There are a number of W.Y. scenes for which the soundtrack has a huge impact, and wouldn't play the same without it.

There was a soundtrack CD to this show that was released years and years ago. Is it EVERY single song that was used on this show during its six-year-run?

Were some of the songs not featured on the CD at all?

I really hope Daniel Stern (adult Kevin/narrator) is interviewed as well. His voice was a key part of the series (like Bob Saget in "How I Met Your Mother").

A round-table cast chat would be great.

I'm not as familiar with The Wonder Years as I am with Mama's Family so I won't be able to tell when/if music edits occur. I still really want this set and I trust Time Life will do everything they possibly can to make sure this is an awesome set.

Someone asked on their facebook page if they're gonna release this also on other regions (so outside US and Canada) and they replied that it's very difficult.

I think I'm gonna get a region free player, beacuse I'm really sick of all the show that I'm missing  (to name a few: 'Mary Tyler Moore', 'Family Ties', 'Hill Street Blues' and now this).

Wow, I couldn't believe it when I first read the news - we've all had to wait so long for this to happen it almost seems unreal! I really do hope TimeLife realizes how important the music is to this show and that they're doing everything in their power to secure every single title that played throughout the episodes. Now, if Warner Bros. would just get some sense knocked into them, maybe they could finally release another classic...Perfect Strangers, and then my favourite 3 TV shows growing up would be on DVD (Quantum Leap...another show that suffered from the music release issue, but luckily I was able to get the UK versions which for some reason had all the original music untouched...The Wonder Years...and Perfect Strangers).

I am not a big fan of elaborate packaging such as this. Since this isn't a "must-have-on-release-day" for me, I will wait and hopefully not long after they will release the seasons in standard cases, like they did with "China Beach".

Ditto that. As much as I love the show, it's not worth spending such a high amount to be signed by the cast.

Here is the link (http://timelife.com/products/the-wonder-years-experience-signature-edition/?utm_source=WY_SignaturePreSale713_EM10&utm_campaign=Y14GWONUSA&utm_medium=email&&utm_content=ProdTitleTxt), if anyone is interested.

It says it is signed by Fred and Danica and "other cast members." Why couldn't we see a list of who all signed the piece??

OK the rest of the prices announced.

The Standard Edition Price of the Complete Series Announced 249.95
Complete series plus "the experience" (Gym Bag, Shirt, Socks, etc.) is 299.95

and the signature edition which includes the standard edition plus "the experience" with the autographs of the cast and certificate of authenticity is 499.95 (limited to 500 sets)

pre-ordering the standard editions doesn't seem necessary I agree but I have no idea how long until the signature edition sells out so those who want that should probably pre-order soon

Well, I braced myself for the crazy high prices and was not disappointed there for sure :p Git the email yesterday about the signature edition and thought okay I'll get this one since it'd be nice to have it signed by the cast..saw that 500 dollar price for it...holy CRAP!!!! Needless to say I passed on that one! That edition will sell out regardless due to only 500 available..well make that only 499 available now since the poster above me bought one! Got an email this morning for the regular and Experience Edition. Price for normal edition is much more reasonable. Experience edition is...a harder price to swallow but easier then that Signature one. So, I asked myself how much I want the extra stuff in the Experience edition..I do want all of the extras especially the CD so in the end I pre-ordered the Experience Edition. All together with taxes and shipping it came to 340 bucks..dear God that's more than I wanted to spend I'll be honest. However, I understand why on top of the usual Time Life premium price this is so damn expensive..this is the pricing I was expecting whoever did release it would charge in the end because of the nasty monster nightmare music clearances. As hard as the price is to stomach I'll gladly pay it so they can cover the music clearances. If they really can clear all of it it'll be a damn miracle and I hate to see what they had to pay to get it all. A few years back Fox said it'd cost upwards of 12 MILLION to clear the rights for the whole series. So figure Time Life had to cough up at least that and you can imagine why the high price tag for the sets. On top of that they had to get the rights to the show from Fox, who is extremely stingy with their shows as is so...yeah major big time headache nightmare. I'm still in total disbelief they've pulled this entire stunt off and won't completely believe it till the package arrives! Needless to say, everyone that begged and cried for this show's release really better support it. Costed this company literally a few arms and a leg to do it.

Aside from the lovely premium prices Time Life loves to charge, that's my only complaint with them. I have had two truly exceptionally outstanding experiences with them. I pre-ordered the Real Ghostbusters Complete series from them, and had it less than 48 hours after it's release . Last year I ordered their minster Power Of Love box set and again had it less than 48 hours after ordering. They go way way above and beyond for their sets. Outstanding, sturdy, reliable packaging and the quality of the actual content is unbelievably good. With all that said this is going to be one hell of a release if their high quality continues which I have no doubt of. So yeah they earned their 300 bucks this time plus the other 500 I've spent the other two times.

One final note..usually order confirmation comes from them RIGHT away but it took a good 20 minutes for me to get that email this morning which tells me these pre orders are going very fast and they're getting hammered hard so if you want a set I'd order very very soon. Also, they will probably ship everyone's set from Memphis, which is why I get their stuff in 1.5 days instead of 2. Also they use FedEx and not UPS so if you have had issues with FedEx and really want this set I'd suggest making special arrangements to maybe pick it up at a pick up store/facility because this is a VERY expensive package that you do NOT want issues or delivery issues with! Enjoy the sets guys, I'm looking forward to it!! Early October it says they'll be shipped!

I understand everyone's different financial structures but there are two sides of every coin and am very surprised at some of the "shocked price posts"...now really read this............

First The Wonder Years was the #1 most requested DVD series for years, but only with the original music. 99% bet it would never be released......well it is!

Time/Life historically does massive exclusive sets, maybe in lets say 3 years will a different retail version be released?, will DVD's even be around then?

There is no sense on waiting on a pre-order, since your credit card doesn't get charged till it is shipped, my order had no tax and all came with free shipping, so not sure why someone paid that.

Now if the six seasons were released separate (probably never will happen), with the music who wouldn't and said they would pay a higher price? c/mon everyone you all said/wrote it.....so retail standard $39.99 times six seasons equals $239.94....ok plus the locker, yearbook, 15 hours of extras, magnets for standard edition.......so I ask what is all the shock about?

Now if you don't care about a gym bag, t-shirt, socks, buttons & a new soundtrack CD for another $50....ok pass

that leaves an extra $200 for a guaranteed Fred, Danica and other cast members to autograph the cover of the yearbook......at any celebrity show, they rountinely charge for autographs.....plus this is limited to 500 sets.....I guarantee if I just left it alone, in 5 years, I could sell the autograph version with the COA for over $1000........

I recently finished my all four Monkees autographs with the elusive Mike Nesmith signature, just his name was $100 at a convention, but it took me 34 years to complete the 8x10 with all four signatures and of course Davy Jones is gone. Meaning collecting is expensive.

But if I made a point at all, what you all wanted and screamed for is a reality at $39.99 a season, which is exactly what "My Favorite Martian" or alike sells for at retail.

Lawyered! ""How I Met Your Mother" quote!

PS......In jest I ask, whatever happened to getting at least one unedited official season of "Ozzie & Harriet" when I gave enough to the kickstarter campaign to get all 15 seasons nearly 4 years ago! I know Sam you are trying and I loved giving the interview for the extras, but I am getting anxious....lol

Interesting..I wonder what 18 songs those will be? Guess we will find out! One thing they should really consider is printing a booklet listing every sing heard in the series by episode. It'd be a great help for those wanting to get the songs for their collections. There's several through out the series I dint know the names and artists for that I'd like to get. I think that would be a very reasonable, easy last thing to add into the set.

I'm looking forward to seeing the set. I have a bootleg copy of the series here that's...serviceable and passable in quality I guess. This set should be the masters of all the episodes so everything should be a massive improvement in quality. Plus 4 whole discs of extras..they went all out no one can deny that.

300 songs were cleared?!!!! Holy DAMN...good God I had no idea there were at least anywhere near that many frickin songs in the series..but thinking of it now there's a ton of music in the background of a lot of scenes too so I imagine the total number is way up there. I really don't want to know what that music clearance price tag was..I mean damn it really might be up near 20 million with at least that many songs! Now I understand much better why Fox said it'd be a royal pain to clear everything.

Excellent news an additional 8 hours of bonus features have been added to the set.
http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Wonder-Years-The-Complete-Series/20125

Commentary of the first kiss outtakes by Fred (Savage) and Danica (McKellar). As previously announced, the DVD set will include all six takes of the legendary first kiss from Pilot episode, with Fred and Danica originally only commenting on Take #6. Now, the set features commentary from the stars on the previous five takes, and they explain how they nailed it on take #6.
"That's a Wrap! Mark B. Perry's Farewell Set Tour Season 5" - Writer/Producer Mark B. Perry's home video set tour from the end of his final season on the show, which includes new commentary from him.
"From the Vault: Alley Mills and Bob Brush Letters" - Alley Mills reads her emotional, written conversation with Executive Producer Bob Brush about the show's finale.
The one-hour finale as it was originally aired on ABC on May 12, 1993, including a deleted scene not included in the half-hour broadcasts of the final two episodes (both the one-hour finale and half-hour versions of the final two episodes will be included in the extras).

Expanded featurettes including:
"I Love You for Sentimental Reasons: Fan Favorite Episodes" - This featurette was produced using comments posted by fans on the official StarVista Entertainment/Time Life Wonder Years Facebook page (if your quote is below, you're in the featurette!)
"...the (episode) where Kevin and Wayne fight about the empty bedroom"
"The final scene with Wart is absolutely brutal"
"I love (the episode) where they can see their neighbor's....uh, tomatoes!"
"Any episode with Becky Slater"

I've compared the list of "cleared" songs with lists across the internet of all the songs used throughout the series and I've come up with this rough list of the songs NOT included. This is by no means official or complete. If anyone has any to add, please tell us:

7. Heart of Darkness
"Riders on the Storm" by The Doors

28. On the Spot
"That's Entertainment" by The Jam

30. The Family Car
"Long My You Run" by Neil Young

I think these two are public domain, so they may not be edited out:

justegofficial, is the version of In My Life by Judy Collins exactly the same as the one heard in the "Whose Woods Are These" and "The Wonder Years" episodes?

Listen extremely carefully to this, and then compare it to the version of the song heard in those two episodes.

Sorry, I don't know. I don't have the set, I just compiled a list of songs (using music guides posted across the internet) that were originally used but weren't listed among the "cleared" songs in the press release.

The reason I asked is because there was a different version of the song that was clearly not Judy Collins'. It replaced her rendition on syndicated reruns of the episode "The Wonder Years". Note the guitar squeaks. They were not in Judy's version at all.

I've compared the list of "cleared" songs with lists across the internet of all the songs used throughout the series and I've come up with this rough list of the songs NOT included. This is by no means official or complete. If anyone has any to add, please tell us:

2. Swingers
"In My Life" by Judy Collins

5. The Phone Call
"Theme from Romeo and Juliet" by Nino Rota

7. Heart of Darkness
"Riders on the Storm" by The Doors
"Here Comes the Sun" by Richie Havens

9. Christmas
"Silent Night" by Glen Cambell and Cher

20. Brightwing
"One-Adam 12" - Adam 12 Theme Song

22. Whose Woods Are These
"Troi Gymnopedies" by Blood, Sweat & Tears

23. How I'm Spending My Summer Vacation
"Light My Fire" by The Doors

25. Math Class
"The Twilight Zone" by Marius Constant

28. On the Spot
"That's Entertainment" by The Jam

30. The Family Car
"Long My You Run" by Neil Young

32. Math Class Squared
"The Twilight Zone" by Marius Constant

I think these two are public domain, so they may not be edited out:

36. She, My Friend and I
"Auld Lang Syne" by Guy Lombardo

38. Tree House
"The Ride of the Valkyries" by Richard Wagner

41. Faith
"Amazing Grace" by Judy Collins

52. Little Debbie
"Tammy" by Debbie Reynolds

61. Buster
"How Much Is That Doggie in the Window" by Patti Page
"Lassie" - Theme Song

69. The Wonder Years
"Here Comes the Sun" by Richie Havens

74. Full Moon Rising
"Jeopardy Think Music"
"Theme from Hawaii 5-0" by The Ventures

81. Grandpa's Car
"Citizens (dum-de-dum-dum) Drive Safely" by M. Roza and W. Schumann

87. Lunch Stories
"Peter Gun Theme" by Henry Mancini

96. Scenes From a Wedding
"Back Off Boogaloo" by Ringo Starr

97. Sex and Economics
"We're in the Money" by Ginger Rogers

104. New Year
"Steel Guitar Dancers" by Paul Anka

If this list is all true, that's actually not too many songs being cut. Most of these I won't even miss. Although, I really hope the "Jeopardy! Think Music" isn't cut.

Someone please refresh my memory....

Was the "Jeopardy Think Music" used in the Mama's Family episode "Mama on Jeopardy!"? You'd think I could remember this since this is one of my favorite episodes of the series. If it was, then it should be on The Wonder Years set.

It's LIKELY (since Time Life/StarVista released both series), but I wouldn't assume it will be included until we have the set in our hands and can check it. You never know.

I'm VERY pleased with Time Life. I think they really tried on this set.

I'm very pleased, too. I can't imagine the amount of work (and money) that went into this set. For fans to go from no hope at all for this series ever coming out on DVD in a form close to resembling anything uncut/unedited to now being able to buy the entire series in a pretty cool looking packaging, with extensive extras and 102 of the 115 episodes being uncut/unedited is literally unbelievable. I'm stunned and my excitement out-weighs any disappointment I may feel about those unfortunate (but minimal, considering) music edits.

And I'm glad no scenes were cut out completely. The way the edits were handled in the Mama's Family set (the Singing In The Rain scene just hacked out without any thought of continuity was one of the worst I think) made me a little worried about The Wonder Years and how the inevitable edits would be handled there, but they seem to have done this series right.

"Mama's Family" is my all-time favorite sitcom...what they did to the episodes "Mama for Mayor", "Gert Rides Again", and "Mama In One" (there were other minor edits but those are the episodes that got hit the hardest) were just unforgivable. Luckily, cuts aren't happening like that with "The Wonder Years".

OH YEAH! I forgot about "Mama for Mayor." THAT cut was completely unnecessary. It was a no-dialogue montage. To cut it out entirely without substituting the music (they could have used some generic American political song) was just crazy. And then cutting the dance between Gert and Mama was horrible, too. I mean, leaving the footage in and muting the sound would've been better than just deleting it. What was even weirder was on the "Mama's Favorites" disc, with the Vicki Lawrence intros that weren't included in the complete series set (don't even get me started on that), Vicki in the intro for that episode mentioned the scene, even though it was missing from the episode.

also the site provided another picture of some of the "Experience" edition extras!

finally after 21 years of being off the air the whole series is available to own.

I'm delighted TWY is going to be released. While I'm very fond of the show, I will probably wait a while to buy it. I have so many DVDs already, and am so busy with work that I don't get much to watch what I already have. Even though the current price isn't outrageous for a die-hard fan, I just have too much stuff already, that at the time I was ecstatic I bought. If I'm patient the price may come down dramatically. (But that can be a risk...)

You know, I saw somewhere online last week an ad banner for the set saying now shipping thinking that had to be a mistake! But early Friday morning sure enough I git an email saying my Experience Edition had indeed shipped! It'll be at my house on Tuesday. The thing weighs 9 pounds!!! I'll be honest I wasn't expecting it to even ship for another few weeks so my being surprised at the eariy shipping date is an understatement. I'm still uneasy and a bit queasy at the 300 some odd bucks this costed but Between the excellent past experiences I've had with Time Life, the exceptional high quality of their stuff plus totally understanding this is what they had to charge people to get almost all the music cleared I'll pay it. Was gonna downgrade to that season 1-3 set but it's way past too late for that now :p. Oh well, I was going to get all of it anyway may as well do this in one shot! Gotta be positive about it. Looking forward to Tuesday and hope everyone that ordered a set has theirs arrive a ok with no ship ping issues :)

Now that we can see how the discs are packaged (through the unboxing videos), can anyone tell me if those kind of "sleeves" scratch the discs? I know those cardboard sleeves aren't as bad as the ones we used to have problems with (like in the Alias Rambaldi Complete Series set), but they're still cardboard sleeves. I've seen them used before with other sets. They DO look smoother than the ones they used to use. Any issues with these? I just don't want to spend hundreds of dollars for a set with scratched discs.

The sleeves look like those used in the new "Seinfeld" complete series set. They don't scratch the discs if you're super careful with them when pulling them out and putting them back in. I think if you're mindful of the discs, they should be fine.

I am still awaiting for my "signature edition" to arrive and I gladly will wait as long as it takes for them to have changed shipping cartons, so locker or anything else isn't destroyed.

Just a friendly tip on those including myself who worry about scratched or scuffed discs depending on packaging. I am so fussy and neat with my DVD's, when they used to release discs in slimline boxes, 90% I just slit the shrinkwrap like a vinyl album, have a massive store like shelving area, so most of my dvd's contain original promo stickers on shrinkwrap and don't even look opened! I always examine them upon arrival, but to be honest, it's just a good feeling to have them, so yes maybe in 5 years I may find out a "gilligan" disc is bad, etc.

To your point about TWY or similar packages, any extreme over 20 disc boxset, like the original big black red linen lined "Sopranos" box and now "TWY", I just get thin color plastic cases, a little basket and keep them separate near the box, almost like on display.....you see if it takes me 10 minutes to open package, look through area where discs are housed, by the time I do that, it is too exhausting! I want to have fast access to a episode I am desiring. So just today I bought the double very thin millimeter color plastic cases, so I can also coordinate them by season in each a different color case. Example: yellow first season, blue second season, purple third season, then just flip threw them with ease similar to an old fashioned vinyl record case.

TWY was a big exception, I bought all the seinfeld special packages (puffy shirt, etc) in fact I never even opened them! LOL...But I prefer individual season releases as I like having separate cases & artwork which demonstrates how the series progressed.

Happy watching!

Signature numbered set was actually $500, but broken down by season it comes to standard $39.99 a season plus $100 for multiple autographs, a charge which is routine if you ever went to a celebrity autograph show. Plus you get the gymbag, t-shirt, CD, socks, plus more! I wrote a much longer post somewhere in this thread about the price breakdown and "people's shock" when actually if bought season by season over years, you would spend the same amount minus autographs.

I have no interest in any of the non-DVD extras such as the yearbook, gym bag, etc. so am just going to wait and purchase the season sets as they are released separately. If they had released a plain box set version of the complete series like they did with China Beach, I would have sprung for it, but I don't want that locker packaging; I want normal DVD cases with artwork.

I did the same thing since I thought the price for the entire series was way too high. I bought season 1 and I am so disappointed in the picture quality and audio. Picture quality is not even remastered and there is a clear white line going straight down the episodes. The audio is so low that I have to really raise up the volume.

I haven't got mine yet as none of the stores at the mall had it as of last week. I will try Costo on Tuesday.

The lousy video quality doesn't surprise me, though. The CHINA BEACH set did not contain remastered episodes either. They look the same as if one were watching them in the '80s. I guess all the money for these sets went into securing the music rights with little left over for restoration.

For those of you who don't yet know, Fabulous Films in the UK has released a set with 100% of the original music (except they accidentally left the Netflix intro music on one Season 2 episode). If you haven't bought yet, buy that one instead! :) Video is 24fps/NTSC and all the special features are carried over. The US set has no benefits in any way.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01935AHIM/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE

They've also been quoted to say that a Blu-ray release is possible if sales are good enough!
It has performed as expected in this climate, it is not cheap, as it cost a fortune to license and a fortune to clear and produce. It is great value and a brilliant gift, packed with 23 hours of bonus features and it should perform well over christmas. If it ends up doing well it could end up on Blu-ray, there are no plans in the US or UK for the foreseeable future though.
