View Full Version : Question about inactivity of certain mods
wiseguy182 02-11-2014, 04:35 AM I don't want this to taken as a complaint, more as a question. It seems that that are numerous moderators for various forums that are quite inactive. For example, "combsisthebest". I have no beef with this person, but he/she has posted once in 6 years. It seems like eventually, someone would lose moderating priviledges due to being a dormant account. There are others. Again, I'm not complaining against anyone or trying to single anyone out.
Dude111 02-17-2014, 12:33 PM Yes on alot of sites all over the activity is down to nothing and its sad!!!
I value sites like this one here who havent ruined themselves by putting VB4 here, what trash!!!!!!!!! (And a disgrace to VBB)

I especially miss Monika (catlover79). Last summer, for no reason, she disappeared without a trace.

she is on facebook. This site took a downturn in 2008/2009 when social media became popular.
I agree with you this site used to be #1 on my list but with the emergence of soclal media it is now number 4
Facebook
Youtube
City-Data
SitcomsOnline
Dude111 02-18-2014, 09:25 AM Facebook is horrible!!!!
No good..... A CIA info gathering website!!!!!!!!
1 time I got an email from facebook. A sheep invited me there,I WAS PISSED!! (I dont want my email addresses known to facebook) I ignored the email and a couple days later another one came.... I ignored it.. A week later I got an email "REMINDING ME" that someone invited me to facebook...
At this point i was quite angry... I replied to the email and basically told them off -- I said "I will not ever join your CIA/info collecting website and I feel bad for all the people you have in your grip there"
Since then I havent recieved anything else from them!!!! (And I dont want to) I value what little privacy we can still attain!!
Torgo 02-18-2014, 11:57 AM I only use Facebook to keep in touch with family and friends who are far away. I hate trying to have conversations on there.

Just use a screen name for facebook
Mr. Television 02-19-2014, 09:28 AM Just use a screen name for facebook
And put very little information about yourself on it. lol

keep in mind that Facebook tracks what other sites you come to before and after going to their site, and then tries to cross-reference those sites with other Facebook users on those sites - so for example if someone were stalking you on one site, Facebook would happily suggest to them to add you as a friend and all your friends on the site as well.
- assuming you haven't rigorously gone through every possible Facebook security setting, and then recheck those settings every month or so when they randomly decide to make any changes that then reset those settings.
- or you could use a browser extension that blocks all referrer cookies.
of course, then their facial recognition software will examine any photos you post, looking for and cataloging your "faceprint", and then sharing that data with any of their "partners" that wish to use it for whatever they want.
...all of which you have agreed to each and every time you open any Facebook page or click on any link on any Facebook page (regardless of any phony legalese mumbo-jumbo that you post on your wall stating otherwise) .

This site appeals to a small contingency of the general populace. Sad as it may seem, not everyone is a sitcom fan. I know, I don't get those people ever.
This site also has a reputation for uneven moderation. Some people are allowed to go off on crazy topics ad nauseum and will post nonsense just for the apparent joy of seeing their words in print; other people are slapped down, suspended, and banned for daring to contradict a moderator. It's pretty all over the place.
I communicate mostly over Facebook (and occasionally via Google+ and Twitter, but I'm also trying to promote my business via those mediums.) Most of the people who should be on this site and would add valuable content (and some drama, not naive over here) are on IMDB.com.
This site makes money for TJ due to the advertisements on it, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, less participants = less revenue which means less long term profitability. At the end of the day, it will be TJ's choice on whether he can continue running this site if it is not longer generating profit.

i'll agree with you there - I'm just saying that if you are concerned about it, there is a lot more that you should be doing.
janet42 02-20-2014, 08:27 PM Here's another example of inactivity, I realize that not everyone is a fan of "Three's Company", but on facebook on the Antenna's wall after the news came out that "Three's Company, Three's a Crowd, and Too Close for Comfort" is going to go on the air, they had over 300 people that responded either postitive or negative about the shows. Here only about 6 responded.

because we are in a new era. Social Media is more popular than message boards which is why so many members post on Facebook instead of on here
Furienna 02-23-2014, 06:40 AM Hmm... Yeah, you'd think a moderator would post more than once during six years! But I see that at other message boards as well, that the moderators often are less active posters than many other members.
As for this social media trend, I'm not interested in that thing. So I stay at message boards instead.

Dude111 02-23-2014, 03:58 PM It's a new timeYa buddy its a sad time :(
No one cares about thier privacy,etc............... (Well almost no one does)
Furienna 02-23-2014, 04:00 PM There still are many message boards around, and I'm a member of several of them. And as long as long that is the case, I won't care about all those social medias.

It is a sad time because this was one time my #1 site on the internet. I used to hurry home from work so I could post on the boards. But times have changed and the site had to compete with social media
I remember asking the Administrator years ago to change the board a little and add more section but it never happened. I think the fact that it's mainly a sitcom site is what makes it hard to compete
TVFactFan 02-23-2014, 04:10 PM There still are many message boards around, and I'm a member of several of them. And as long as long that is the case, I won't care about all those social medias.
Me too, one message board that I am part of is city-data.com. Great site
So I do social media and additional message board
We have to keep in mind that SitcomsOnline did not have all this competition 10 years ago
Dude111 02-24-2014, 01:48 AM Ah I didnt realise you were also on city-data Bud!!

wiseguy182 02-25-2014, 03:07 PM My point is, it's clear some of these moderators have retired or are otherwise inactive, and I'm just curious how they can still have moderating status when they're not active.
Furienna 02-25-2014, 03:18 PM My point is, it's clear some of these moderators have retired or are otherwise inactive, and I'm just curious how they can still have moderating status when they're not active.
Good question. If you're not active anymore, someone else should become moderator.
I used to periodically remove moderators who hadn't logged in over a year, but I haven't done that in a few years. The way I look at it is that a moderator can always return after a long period. Unless a moderator specifically asks me to remove them, I don't often do it. combsisthebest has actually posted as recently as 2011, but he deleted those posts. He has also logged in as recently as January of this year, so he's still active as far as I'm concerned. Just because he's not posting doesn't mean he's not reacting to reported posts or private messages.
I receive every reported post anyway, so if we have some inactive moderators it's not a big deal. My excellent admins Pavan and Janice can also handle reported posts if I'm not around. We just don't have the need for many more moderators at this time. There's not much to moderate, except to delete spam. Even the spammers have left here in droves, lol.
You can't have the same kind of conversations about sitcom topics on Facebook or Twitter that you can have on a message board. There will always be a place for message boards, but of course social media sites have affected many message boards.
Look at our Unsolved Mysteries board. I'm not sure if the show is still airing anywhere, but the board has always been very active even when the show hasn't been airing. You can't have those same kinds of topics on Facebook. You can't search on Facebook. You can't find Facebook results in Google. There are people on message boards that you would never add as a friend on Facebook.
How many sites and message boards are still active since 1999? We have nearly 5 million posts. I think we have a pretty special community here. I don't think we are going away anytime soon. This was always a very niche site. It's here for people who still find it useful and enjoyable.
TVFactFan, I have to wonder how many people you have personally driven away from this site with some of your harassing posts. When you act like a know-it-all and intimidate people, they don't feel very welcome to post here. You'd be long gone from many other message boards. Consider yourself lucky that you are still able to even post here. How many sites have you been banned again from?

Here is Monika's (catlover79)'s response:
Most of the reason I haven't been to SO in so long is because of my hectic work schedule at the paper - for fun, I only really have time for email and FB and that's about it. I'm usually so tired by the end of the day I'm out like a light!! I hope everyone understands.
Vahan 02-26-2014, 12:47 PM For some reason, I forgot the time she made a thread here making that announcement.

You know you are my favorite poster here, lol. You bring a lot of interesting topics and posts to the boards. Just disappointed to see the site lower in your rankings, but 4th is not too shabby.
Thanks for your better behavior in recent months. Once a few people were taken out of the equation, it has been mostly problem free.

The ranking has to do with the low activity but this is still the number 1 TV site on the internet. #4 is just my overall ranking when talking about the internet in general.
Facebook and Youtube is just on a different level of entertainment.

Well that comes from 12 years of posting
biffbronson 02-27-2014, 02:59 AM Considering how many TV sites alone are out there, 4th is pretty high praise!
I think a mistake was made when so many sub-categories were created in some areas -- for example, a lot of people who are fans of Bonanza are also fans of Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, The Rifleman, The Big Valley, Wagon Train, Rawhide, The Rebel, Stagecoach West, etc. A single "Classic TV Westerns" category is all you need (with a list like that shown) so that fans don't need to waste time checking all over for new posts (which usually there aren't any).
Same thing with a possible "Classic TV Murder-Mystery-Courtroom" category -- why not put Perry Mason, Diagnosis Murder, Matlock, Columbo, Murder She Wrote, etc. all together?
Coffeecup 03-30-2014, 09:43 PM I don't poke on the decade of tv show sections as much as Chit Chat and or the first section -TV shows discussions. I find it nice we can talk about subjects other than tv shows. I will keep popping on to chat.

janet42 04-24-2014, 05:59 AM Here is another example of inactivity. Yesterday was Joyce DeWitt's birthday and on two facebook walls people were wishing her a happy birthday the Antenna Wall and a Joyce DeWitt's fan facebook page. But not one person including myself started a thread here wishing her a happy birthday. My reason was because it was already being done on facebook.

A moderators failure to wish someone a happy birthday is not an example of inactivity. Pavan is the mod on that board and the blog keeps him busy enough as-it-is. I'm glad that Joyce is getting many happy birthdays on Facebook but I'm quite sure she's not going to be hurt because a thread wasn't started here. Instead of griping over something so ridiculous why not start a belated happy birthday thread.

I'm not griping and I could of started a thread for Joyce here if I wanted to, but I already wished her a happy birthday on facebook. The only reason I mentioned her is to give an example of how pepple aren't posting here like they used to. I think the monitors do their best running a great message board, but you are losing people here. Some to facebook and some for other reasons.
Vahan 04-25-2014, 02:15 PM I post on Facebook, but I think it is also evil for driving many people away (including Monika) from posting here.
Luckily for me, I WILL NEVER FALL VICTIM TO POSTING ONLY ON FACEBOOK!

If that was true then when you click the new posts it wouldn't only be 2 pages at 7pm in the evening.
And I guess it's because we all ran out of things to talk about. In 2003/2004 it was so much to discuss because now it's nothing left to discuss
And since it's on TV site only, people went to social media
