I can't get this case out of my head, but I can't recall who it was either. I remember it involved a hitchhiker, and the hitchhiker was described by witnesses as wearing a cowboy hat. It seemed like he and the person he was hitching with ended up leaving a short time after he was introduced to the victims family and/or friends, and after "they" left, everyone found out that just the hitchhiker had left, and that he had killed someone and left them in a trunk? Now that I think about it, maybe he left on his own and left a body behind, but didn't kill anyone that lived there? I remember the witness saying that the drifter/hitchhiker was creepy and had a cowboy hat. I know this post is all over the place but I am just having a hard time remembering it.

Not a hitchhiker, but he helped another man carjack and murder a teenager. The accomplice killed himself but the murderer with the cowboy hat has never been identified. :(
