In case anyone wants to record it/watch it, Me-TV aired a commercial tonight advertising a Valentine's Day Love, American Style mini marathon. They made a point of mentioning that they will be showing the episode "Love and the Happy Days". In case you didn't know, this is the one where Harold Gould played the role of Howard Cunningham. This was the initial pilot for Happy Days. When the network didn't buy it, it later got used as an episode on Love, American Style-where many failed pilots went.

Footage of this episode was later used in the Season 2 Happy Days episode Who's Sorry Now?

This is on Valentine's Day, Friday 2/14. The Happy Days episode airs at 8pm EST.

Cant wait to watch that episode just because its never in the rotation of Happy Days. The first episode of Happy Days when shown on networks is the episode where Richie dates a girl and the infamous scene where Fonzie unhooks the bra off the radiator at Arnolds.

Somehow I had the good fortune to see the pilot on Love American Style, which IMO is an utterly charming show. I've always liked Harold Gould and he would've been a great Mr. C. But....then...it's really hard to imagine anyone else but Tom Bosley as Mr. C. as he did a bang-up job too.

And Ron Howard's great acting in the movie! He's a great actor and played a likeable character a wide range of folks would enjoy following.

I was just going by what I heard Garry Marshall himself say in an interview. The success of Grease on Broadway played a role as it showed executives that there was an interest in the 1950's, but its financial success and the amount of people viewing it paled in comparison to the number of tickets sold to American Graffiti. In other words, American Graffiti brought in big $$ in its initial run. While the success of both American Graffiti and Grease proved interest in the 50's, American Graffiti had the bigger influence on executives and Garry Marshall, but that's not to discount the role Grease played as well. Also, Grease in its early run was way too adult for TV at the time. Over the course of the 70's, it was toned down a lot.

Agreed. He was great in Andy Griffith, American Graffiti, and Happy Days. One of my favorites.

Garry Marshall wanted Ron Howard from the start but oddly, ABC executives didn't want Ron Howard after the initial "Love and the Happy Days". When they decided to try out the series for 1974, they actually suggested Robby Benson to Marshall, but Marshall thankfully stuck to his guns and didn't give in.
