Hi all, new to this forum. I am a big fan of the late daytime serial "Guiding Light". I first became aware of it in the late 1970s when I was at my grandmother's house and would see it on TV. As the years went on, I watched it on and off but in my older years I have come to love and appreciate it and have a number of DVDs to keep me happy.

My favorite characters were so many to name, but here's an idea of who I liked: Ben McFarren, Evie Stapleton, Justin Marler, Ross Marler, Darcy Dekker, Silas Crocker, Floyd Parker, Bert Bauer, Ed Bauer (especially when Mart Hulswit was in the role), Elizabeth Spaulding, Alan Spaulding (especially when Chris Bernau was in the role), Dylan, Philip Spaulding (especially when John Bolger was in the role).....

I miss this show very much and wish it was still on CBS. Shame on P&G for treating its soaps like garbage. :(

What about Kim Zimmer's Reva or Bradley Cole's Jeffrey?

I liked Reva/Jeffrey better than Reva/Josh.

I also adored Jonathan Randall.

I liked Reva with Jeffrey also. I also liked Reva with Kyle Sampson (in the mid '80s). I thought Bradley Cole was more handsome without the moustache. ;-)

My Mom and Grandma watched this. I watched it on and off if I was around. A very memorable time in the show was when Nola got pregnant and tried to pin the paternity on Kelly. And he was dating Morgan. That Nola sure could create drama! And her brother Tony was HOT!!!

In the '80s my mother and my girlfriend were hooked on Guiding Light, so I know WAY more about it then I really should.

I loved "Otalia".

They were the best part of the last year.

Everything else was substandard.

When would you consider GL to be at its absolute peak?

The Josh/Reva/Annie story line comes to mind.

Procter and Gamble treating the show like garbage had nothing to do with it. It got cancelled for the same reason every show gets cancelled, Guiding Light had very low ratings its last few years. People don't watch daytime soap operas like they used to. And probably never will again. That's just the way the way it is.

The soaps are dying, while prime-time is becoming more serialized. GL was at their best during the whole Roger Thorpe vs. Alan Spaulding era (which went on for years). I love the original actors but when they replaced them the new ones were mediocre by comparison.

The show was huge during the 80's with rock stars stopping by and I think Nola even got to do a musical.

I wish one of those sub-channel networks could air this show, Edge of Night, and Dark Shadows. I am assuming that nobody ever intended soaps to be watched after the original broadcast. EON and DS had syndication, but it may be complicated to settle the rights especially if residuals are involved. I'm sure the original contacts never thought of it. Nobody even thought Dark Shadows would last more than a few months.

In many cases older episodes were not even kept by the network since they thought what good was an old soap that would only air once.

Very cool! I agree! I'd love to see old Soaps again! 70's and 80's era !;) Add "Secret Storm" to that list. That was another one I watched with my Mom and GrandMom! :)
