View Full Version : Every Fourth Season Episode is Syndicated Prints

I think that this warrants its own thread. Every episode on the season four DVD is the syndicated version. The fact that ABC Family had different edits proves that they were still available. There's no excuse for these syndicated episodes. I can see these exact same versions on BET for free. Everyone who didn't buy the DVD yet should save their money.

I will be shocked if this DVD does not get a well-deserved 1 out of 5 in the upcoming review.

I'm content with the syndicated versions but it would have been nice to own the "complete" season like the box says.

There are arguments over the word "complete". It's either complete because all the episodes are there, or it's complete because every episode is exactly as it first aired.

All the season 4 episodes are the syndicated versions. I've posted the run times below. It appears that there have been no music cuts/replacements, which is the one upside to this release.

DISC 1
1. "Surely You Joust" - 21:50
2. "Hot Wheels" - 21:50
3. "Dance to the Music" - 21:50
4. "Driving Carl Crazy" - 21:50
5. "Rumor Has It" - 21:48
6. "No. 1 with a Bullet" - 21:52
7. "Whose Kid Is it, Anyway?" - 21:49
8. "An Officer and a Waldo" - 21:49

DISC 2
9. "Just One Date" - 21:51
10. "The Oddest Couple" - 21:49
11. "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad House" - 21:44
12. "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Urkel" - 21:49
13. "Muskrat Love" - 21:51
14. "The Way the Ball Bounces" - 21:49
15. "A Thought in the Dark - 21:50
16. "Tender Kisses" - 21:52

DISC 3
17. "Heart Strings" - 21:50
18. "Higher Anxiety" - 21:49
19. "Mama's Wedding" - 21:52
20. "Pulling Teeth" - 21:51
21. "Walk on the Wild Side" - 21:49
22. "Hot Stuff" - 21:49
23. "Stormy Weather" - 21:51
24. "Buds 'N' Buns" - 21:50

OTHER NOTES:
I never realized it before but the episode "Pulling Teeth" has got to be one of the worst episodes of the series. It just seems odd to me like it doesn't fit in.

The dueling accordions scene in "Hot Stuff" with Steve and Myra is priceless!

My top 5 episodes from season 4 are "Driving Carl Crazy", "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Urkel", "A Thought in the Dark", "The Oddest Couple", & "Surely You Joust"

thats a shame that they are the syndicated prints. i can tolerate an episode here and there show up on a dvd set cut. but the entire release? absolutley uncalled for. while theres nothing we can do about season 4 i strongly suggest we voice our complaints so this same thing doesnt happen with seasons 5-9

I agree with this, but I would replace "Surely You Joust" with "It's A Mad, Mad, Madhouse."

Its where it asks your name and then it asks for your email and then you fill out the box on the bottom with your request or problem about the edited duds...there is a link at tvshowsondvd.com that click and fill out. I better get my unedited copy or I will be pissed....it says once they run out thats it...I dont think thats fair since they made the mistake.

I assume they will contact us asking for our mailing address. We will probably have to send in the old discs in order to get the corrected ones---that's how Disney does defective discs.

It really doesn't surprise me. If you, I, or anyone who knew anything about the show put this set together then it would be perfect but when people just manufacture it to make money, crap happens. Thankfully, they're admitting their mistake and correcting it.

When you use the contact form on their site to request replacement discs, this is the email response you will receive: (I received this a few days later)

Thank you for your email. Please respond with your address, and once the new set becomes available in April, a pre-paid shipping label will be sent to you. Once you receive it, please return the incorrect box set of Family Matter Season 4 back to me. Once I receive it, I will then send you the new set. I apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continued support of Warner Home Video products.

Kind regards,

Sherri Bogard
Warner Bros. Customer Service

Wouldn't it be easier to just mail the discs and not the entire box set? If I send them my entire box set including the outer sleeve, I better get it back.

Hmmm...I never received that email and I sent a request for replacement. I hate that we have to turn in the defective dvds. We should be able to keep them plus the unedited versions. It is their mistake! WB is becoming very sloppy in their work.

I don't now know how they thought someone would not notice, especially if you watched it on ABC in the 90's

New info from TVShowsOnDVD.com's article:

UPDATED (2/15): People continue to as when (or if) the corrected versions will make it to retail. It IS in-the-works, of course...and our contact at Warner confirms that the way consumers will be able to tell the difference is via the UPC code (currently "883929373949" on the original product, a new UPC will be assigned once the corrected version is ready). As for "when": Warner said in their statement that the DVDs with newly corrected episodes will be available beginning in early April (i.e., 2 months from now). At that time the consumers who already own the title and signed up for the replacement program will get just the discs. Simultaneously, Warner will have to begin filling retail packages with those same corrected discs, and then ship them to the retailer warehouses to distribute to stores. That takes a bit of time, of course, so logic says it will probably be at least later in April before you start to notice them on your local shelves.

I'm not going to get this just yet. I still haven't even gotten Season 3 but I plan to get it soon. I'm going to wait until the price goes down for Season 4. As with the past Family Matters DVDs, they are usually around $25 when they first come out, but probably by this fall they will be about $10, and that is when I will buy it.

Thanks for posting that. Good thing I didn't pick up Season 4 yet. I usually wait for these to go on sale because Best Buy usually has sales on these occasionally for $9.99. I'll be looking out for the new UPC code.

BTW- I notice on the back cover, it says "Widescreen." Are these episodes in widescreen or is that just a typo? I don't ever recall FAMILY MATTERS ever being shown in widescreen.

I received my shipping label today. Be aware that it's a FedEx shipping label and you will need to locate a FedEx shipping location for it to be mailed. A drop-off location won't work, you will need to hand the package to an actual person for it to be mailed.

I got my new set today as well! That's horrible about episode 6 but at least it's just one episode...there's a possibility that the original broadcast version of this episode was destroyed or damaged and that's why we are stuck with the syndicated version.

Hopefully they get season 5 right the first time.

I'm sorry. They must have it somewhere. Most websites have another section for the new release. The new one says April 8 under release date. Here's Barnes & Noble's unedited DVD, you might be able to search for a store near you to see if it's in stock: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/dvd-family-matters-the-complete-fourth-season/27519839?ean=883929413799
