Viewers appear to be starving for soapy plot lines, as nighttime soaps like "Scandal" and "Dallas" have thrived in recent years.

PEOPLE ARE SICK AND TIRED OF TALK AND REALITY SHOWS!!!
Agreed. They have been scraping the bottom of the barrel for years now. Too bad most of the soaps had to be canceled before we could see the turn-around...

I really don't think soaps have come back from the dead.
All that has happenend is that viewers from all the cancelled soaps have tuned in to the remaining soaps. I can say from sure a lot of long time BB and YR fans no longer watch. Instead the long time viewers are replaced with newer viewers.

I don't think they've really came back from the dead either.
IMO. I think this may be GH's last year. The ratings are dipping some, and more people are just "hate watching". Personally, I think Ron C. sucks at his job. He's as bad as the guy who wrote Passions. That's the feel GH has these days. It's just a big messed up comedy. Not really a soap.
Only reason I still watch is because they haven't fired Jon Lindstrom, Kelly Monaco, and Mo Benard yet.

There hasn't been a new Soap in years. The veteran daytime soaps are barely hanging on.

All soaps have been renewed, with BB being renewed for the shortest time.
YR - renewed 3 years
BB - renewed only 1 year
DOOL - renewed 2 years ??? Next year will be the big 50.
GH - last soap to be renewed

When I see more daytime soaps on and maybe have the coverage it had a decade or so ago, then I will agree they came back from the dead but right now there in limbo.

Can't please everyone, "GENERAL HOSPITAL" the longest running scripted series in the history of television, starting year 51 on April 1, 2014 has NEVER BEEN YOUR AVERAGE SOAP OPERA!
With 3 Spin-off's, one short lived late 60's, Port Charles and GH: Nightshift.....but since it started aquiring a long dedicated supportive audience with the introduction of the "Luke Spencer" character, masterfully played by numerous daytime Emmy Winner Anthony Geary in approx 1978.
From Gloria Monty to Ron C. GH is and always HAS BEEN A "Science Fiction Soap" that started with a storyline lifted from a "Underdog" cartoon segment about the Cassadine family (still on series) freezing the world! Then there were aliens, people returning from the dead thru chirogentics (frozen), The search for Aztek Treasure (Raider's Style)......the list is too numerous..........Oh I forgot Vampires! (aka Dark Shadows).....
so don't think Ron C (Passions) has much to do with the history of GH story telling, he has restored so many legacy characters and 35 year+ old story lines which is amazing for a soap that was on the verge of cancellation just because ABC was getting out of the soap business.....instead to invest in their much beloved, hyped now on the verge of cancellation "Katie", plus their numerous failed attempts and expermiments like "Good Afternoon America"
GH is on a all time ratings high, never to beat the most watched episodes in daytime history (Luke & Laura Wedding) but even circulation of the magazine "ABC Soaps In Depth" has increased! Not bad for a network with only one soap left.
Oh and launching the careers of Richard Simmons, Demi Moore, Jack Wagner, John Stamos, Rick Springfield, Janine Turner, Ricky Martin, again too numerous to list....to present and future stars like Jonathan Jackson (Nashville) and so many more.
GH doesn't need me to defend it, the 50 years speaks for itself! Here's to the 51st!

I think there are a lot of people who would prefer to watch fake drama with actual actors and actresses as opposed to fake drama in reality shows with people who clearly should not be anywhere near a TV camera. Also, there are those viewers that have watched their shows (that are still on) for years and want to see it through. I also think a lot are tired of the police procedural/catch the weird serial killer stuff like CSI and Criminal Minds and just want old-fashioned drama.
