View Full Version : The Island vs. The Island
OH MY! Watching this WONDERFUL show on my DVDs AND watching it on TV Land. I have discovered something very, very crazy on Gilligan's Island. It's the island itself and I thought I saw some crazy things in my day, but this one beats the cake.
GILLIGAN'S ISLAND LOCATION: about 200 miles southeast of Hawaii
Wikipedia:
The episode "The Pigeon" places the island approximately 300 miles (480 km) southeast of Hawaii, while the episode "X Marks the Spot" gives a location near 140° longitude, 10° latitude, which puts it about 1,200 miles (1,900 km) to the southeast. Actually stating the reverse, but 140° latitude is not possible, and not stating direction, but will assume West latitude and North longitude. This corresponds exactly to where the General draws his X on a map, which, according to the plot, is the location of the island. In the episode "Big Man On a Little Stick", however, the Professor gives the position as "approximately 110° longitude and 10° latitude".
POSTING MORE ON THIS>>>
In mapping the island, lets take a look at this.
THE UNOFFICIAL GILLIGAN'S ISLAND HANDBOOK (P65) states: The series provides us with three maps of the island - all of which offer conflicting topographical information.
1) The Professor's map of the island [Episode 58]
Now the professor is a very smart man and this is a pretty elaborate map...
2) Lord Beasley Waterford's map is found in episode 75: Man With A Net
Now Lord Beasley is obsessed with catching the Pussycat Swallowtail, thus he would be as detailed as possible.
In viewing these two maps, I think they are both valuable.
Okay, they look very similar, but...
#1) Although the Professor's map is a chalk drawing, I would think it is more accurate than Lord Beasley's. The edges appear to have more detail. The Professor lives on the island, thus I would hope he could draw a more accurate map.
#2) Lord Beasley's map appears to be a professionally printed map. Take a look at the direction compass in the lower left corner. Now if this is a professional printed map with so much detail, how come someone would make such a map of an "assumed" uninhabited island. There is another error. If this is a professional map, why are the huts noted on the map??? Okay, okay. It is pretty cool to see where the huts are on the map. Also, Gilligan and the Skipper climb a mountain on the other side of the island with Lord Beasley to hunt for the Swallowtail. That is clearly marked on Beasley's map
3) This third photo is not a map but a photo from astronauts orbiting the earth. From episode 90: Splashdown
THIS IS BY FAR THE MOST DISTURBING IMAGE.
Here, the Professor suggests that they light logs on fire to spell out S.O.S. Well, Gilligan almost sets himself on fire and messes up the last letter.
The Astronaut's image is disturbing on several levels.
A) It doesn't look anything like the first two maps. Thus, if this is an image of the island, how could the Professor and Lord Beasley be SO VERY WRONG?
B) This image shows heavy vegetation with little to no clearings. Thus, the huts would not be in a clearing, but covered with vegetation.
C) The castaways set the palm tree logs out on the beach. In the astronaut's image, the logs are mostly on the beach but also go into the vegetation. Okay, perhaps the angle, but this is an image from space.
D) Let's take a look at the size of the logs in relation to the island. As we can see, the longs are about the length of the height of an adult: approx. 6 feet. Okay, so the astronaut's image shows that if the logs were set end to end, the width of the island would have been 18-24 feet. :p
E) The logs that Gilligan messes up are where Gilligan is standing in the images below. Thus, the bottom of the S.O.S is toward the water. In the astronaut's image, the top of the S.O.S. is facing the water.
They should have deleted the astronaut's image from the episode if they couldn't get it right.
Even though Lord Beasley's map is a canvas (he is poking pins in it) and he could have easily brought it to the island (note the extremely rough frame the canvas is wrapped around, I think it is obvious that he would had to have drawn it.
Taking a closer look at Lord Beasley's map, (I don't know if you can see it in this image), the following is noted on the map:
LAGOON
South Beach
East Beach
Clearing Huts
That spot next to the lagoon that looks like a rock, reads: "QUICK SAND"
Professor: There's no radio Skipper. Now, why would a search party be without a radio?
Skipper: There wouldn't be. Besides, they can see our huts from here.
Wow, the huts are visible from the lagoon.
[Image captured from season 3 episode 14: All About Eva.
From season 3 episode 15: Gilligan Goes Gung Ho
A US Air Force search plane flies over the island. Here are the shots of the island.
Co-Pilot: There's one more island I think we aught to check out. It's not on the map.
Teebs 05-20-2014, 07:54 AM Professor: There's no radio Skipper. Now, why would a search party be without a radio?
Skipper: There wouldn't be. Besides, they can see our huts from here.
Wow, the huts are visible from the lagoon.

Off topic, but that picture of Proffy on the boat cracks me up. Look how close they came to getting the heck off the island! Look at Proffy leaning all casual like on that thing. Come on people, never mind the luggage let's just split this joint right now!

This is by far, one of the most interesting and detailed accurate comparative analysis of the island I have ever seen discussed! I often wondered the shape, size as well. These maps are very interesting.
I did a search and came up with some more information as well.

I really this replica Gilligans Iland. It looks like a board game?
Way better than anything Milton Bradley ever made. If the gorilla and lion were to scale it'd be even cooler. I wish some toy manufacturer would come up with a Gilligan game that best represented the classic 60s episodes.

AntMan67, thanks so much. The island replica was from a foam sheet I got from Michael's store. I used the professor's map as a references and drew it to cut out. It was a lot of fun.
antman67 05-21-2015, 08:17 AM Pat,
You have inspired me to make a detailed board game as part of a class project for school for my daughter. If and when complete I'll post photos. I LOVE your idea!
Pat,

Thank you so much. That is very flattering. I inverted the image of the island and then used a ruler to draw a graph, drew and cut the island out so that the other side came out clean. Here is a shot of the back of it. If there is anything I can help with, please let me know.
The "SOS" was used from creasing tooth picks. Believe it or not I had to use glue in the creases for them to keep their shape. The "O" wouldn't stay by gluing the ends together. I had to glue the creases for that as well.
antman67 05-24-2015, 11:16 AM This is a lot of great detailed information to create the island. I'm thinking of using a pizza size box and use a variety of items, past characters that landed on the island, and making specific trivia cards (like community chest and chance Monopoly) that were featured in some of the episodes.

AWESOME! That sounds great. Each player could be an island animal from the island. You should be able to find a package of them at a toy store.

I found a photo of someone who appears to have designed something like what I had in my mind although not exact because I'd make it a board game.

I like how they incorporated items from each episode. as we all know, true Gilligan fans would recognize these objects immediately from the episode.

Saw this today. Cool right?
Flying Dutchman 07-15-2015, 09:42 PM OMG antman. you built that game? That is so cool. I love it.
I also want to thank you Pat for what you posted. I love to read things about how off the stories in the show were to reality. But it is Gilligans Island.

The professor is tracking a storm that was to hit the island. Here's another map, but this looks like wind currents more than a map of the island right?
antman67 05-16-2016, 02:56 PM To the east of Fiji is an Island called Matuku Island which looks like Gilligan's Island in my opinion? If your looking at a global world map it's on the right side of Fiji.

I clicked on some of the photos, and must say, this island is beautiful!
Perhaps someone can help me out and find some island which is even CLOSER looking?

I agree, but apparently luggage is very, very important to the castaways. They just won't leave the island without it. Even when they had another working boat in "The Friendly Physician'" they returned to the island for "supplies" (i.e. Ginger wanted her makeup).
As if, once back home, they couldn't return to the island for anything left behind that was valuable. Those whacky castaways!
