I was just re-watching my fifth season of Get Smart on dvd and there is one episode where his friend Bill Dana substitutes for Don Adams. I didn't like this episode much and it would have been better with Adams in the role Dana took. I like Bill Dana okay and the episodes where he guest stars alongside Don Adams are good, but this solo outing wasn't as good to me. It's the episode where Dana and 99 go to the North Pole to stop a huge fan from freezing over the United States.

I believe that Don Adams missed this episode due to a salary dispute. I guess it was cleared up quickly since he only missed the one episode.

I agree. I quite like Bill Dana but something didn't quite gel in this outing. The episode was far more suited to Don Adams.

I actually liked "Ice Station Siegfried." One of my favorite parts was when Agent Quigley kept mixing up the names of the admiral, the general and the colonel. And it had Siegfried, Shtarker and Agent 44.

The biggest problem was, they changed NOTHING except having Dana replace Adams. So you have 99 talking to a (most likely) virtual stranger as if he were Max: "Oh, Quigley, I'm so proud of you?!"

I also don't get why they couldn't have made Dana another male CONTROL agent...there are supposed to be lots of them.

Adams was on this episode very briefly, at the beginning at the episode. Max and the Chief were stuck in Miami on account of a snowstorm!
