Which state is the best represented? (http://officialfan.proboards.com/thread/490655/most-popular-show-based-state)
king of comedy 01-26-2014, 09:29 AM I don't live in Hawii, but I enjoy Hawaii 5-0
installLSC 01-26-2014, 04:55 PM Stopped reading the second I noticed "Gunsmoke" wasn't listed for Kansas. Who on earth wrote the list, a 12 year old?
tlc38tlc38 01-26-2014, 05:16 PM "I Love Lucy" should've been New York and "Dallas" should've been Texas.
McGillicuddy 01-26-2014, 05:17 PM That's amazing, every state represented.
McGillicuddy 01-26-2014, 05:20 PM "I Love Lucy" should've been New York and "Dallas" should've been Texas.
Mama's Family should have been Missouri. Although I don't know if it was ever confirmed that Raytown was in Missouri.
tlc38tlc38 01-26-2014, 06:08 PM Mama's Family should have been Missouri. Although I don't know if it was ever confirmed that Raytown was in Missouri.
I think it was unofficially officially confirmed by Vicki Lawrence that Raytown was in Missouri but it never was stated on the show.
I know "The Walking Dead" is hugely popular but I never was a fan so I would put either "Designing Women" or "Matlock" for Georgia.
Marvo301 01-26-2014, 07:09 PM I never knew "My Secret Identity " was set in Nebraska! Since it was filmed in Canada I've always just thought of it as a Canadian show!
tlc38tlc38 01-26-2014, 08:09 PM Here are the ones I would change:
Arizona - Alice
California - The Beverly Hillbillies
Georgia - Matlock
Hawaii - Hawaii Five-O
Indiana - One Day at a Time
Kansas - Gunsmoke
Kentucky - Daniel Boone
Missouri - Mama's Family (unofficially)
Montana - Caitlin's Way
New Hampshire - Jumanji
New York - I Love Lucy
Ohio - The Drew Carey Show
Pennsylvania - All My Children
Texas - Dallas
Virginia - The Vampire Diaries
California and New York were the toughest to pick only one show.
icecream 01-27-2014, 02:46 AM The Middle should have represented Indiana, much better than Parks and Recreation and higher ratings.
MacLeaper 01-27-2014, 11:21 AM It seems I've seen such lists before. But yeah- it's fun to see where some of these shows are set- and nice to see that all 50 United States of America have been represented somewhere. Now when are we going to get a show set in Guam or the U.S. Virgin Islands or Puerto Rico or Midway or something?:)
(At least Sesame Street actually visited Puerto Rico in a famous episode, since Maria is from Puerto Rico.):)
robyrob 01-27-2014, 12:27 PM what I learned from this map is that there aren't a lot of TV shows set in New Hampshire.
Zoneboy 01-27-2014, 12:40 PM I would have The Waltons representing Virginia.
LUNCH 01-27-2014, 01:08 PM I don't care for these types of lists, but as far as Hawaii goes what Hawaii 5-O are they referring to? The great original (1968-80) show,or the terrible remake? They should at least clarify that.
tlc38tlc38 01-27-2014, 01:25 PM I don't care for these types of lists, but as far as Hawaii goes what Hawaii 5-0 are they referring to?The great original (1968-80) show,or the terrible remake? They should at least clarify that.
The classic show is Hawaii Five-O (the letter)
The new show is Hawaii Five-0 (the number)
Looking at the map, they're talking about the new version.
MacLeaper 01-27-2014, 03:48 PM There are better shows than some of the reality shows and other shows to represent the states.
For Rhode Island, how about Providence, which is actually named after the capital of Rhode Island? (and is definitely a much better series.)
For Iowa, just to get away from reality shows (though I do enjoy watching "American Pickers" at times:) )- what about Drexell's Class or Double Trouble?
For South Carolina, I would go with Shaun Cassidy's show American Gothic or Gullah Gullah Island. (the latter of which, although a children's show, does highlight a part of SC culture and that's pretty neat for the educational factor.)
And, not being a fan of The Walking Dead, I'd much rather have Designing Women there for Georgia (which actually uses "Georgia on My Mind" as the theme song- which is the State Song of Georgia) or Matlock or The Dukes of Hazzard or I'll Fly Away.
I agree that "I Love Lucy" is much more iconic for New York and "Dallas" would be incredibly fitting for Texas- but "Walker, Texas Ranger" is a good show for that state too- and it does have the state name in the title.
I didn't realize "Gunsmoke" was set in Kansas, but I actually like "Smallville" for Kansas, since it's the longest running TV series to date about Superman and you can't get much more iconic or Americana than Superman!:)
(Plus, Superman is my favorite superhero ever- mainly because of how much he reminds me of Jesus since he's definitely a Christ figure- so I definitely would go with "Smallville".:))
I didn't realize "My Secret Identity" was set in North Dakota- that's cool. I love that show! (I did know it was made in Canada though, so I generally thought it was probably set there too- but anyway, that's cool to know it's set in North Dakota. It'd be great to see this show on DVD, by the way.:) )
And I would have preferred to see "Who's The Boss?" for Connecticut.
And for Massachusetts, though I know "Cheers" is incredibly popular and iconic, I also wanted to throw in "The Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries"- The Hardy Boys' hometown of Bayport is said to be located in Massachusetts on the show. (Though this is never really clarified in the books- most fans tend to think Bayport is either in New York or possibly New Jersey.) As a fan of The Hardy Boys, I just had to mention that.:) [And I really love the '70s TV show for The Hardy Boys- though they're all good.]
As for New Hampshire, apparently there is a dearth of good shows set there. I guess the Jumanji cartoon series could have been listed though- that'd be more recognizable, I think- but I'm not really a fan of that movie of the same name or cartoon series.
But for Virginia, there are a lot of good choices- what about Doug, A Different World, JAG and The Waltons? I would have preferred any of those.
And rather than highlighting a show about polygamy as practiced with the Mormon religion (which I thought had been since disallowed but I could be wrong) for Utah, how about Little Chocolatiers? (I realize that's replacing one reality show with another, but there just don't seem to be many great shows set in Utah.)
And for New Mexico, I'd much rather have either Roswell or The Rifleman than a show about a teacher who quits teaching to make drugs.
And for Tennessee, what about a show like Christy or Davy Crockett? I think either one would be a much better choice.
And for Colorado, I would much rather see Mork & Mindy on there. Or Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman or Promised Land.
And for Wyoming, it seems funny that a show named "The Virginian" is actually set in Wyoming and not say- Virginia. But that's fine- it's a good show. They also could have done Cheyenne, which is actually named after the state capital.
And for Indiana, what about The Fugitive or even Garfield and Friends? Hang Time is also set there (as was Good Morning, Miss Bliss before three of the students and their principal moved to California in "Saved By The Bell".)
There's also One Day At A Time and of course, Eerie, Indiana- which actually has the state name in the title.
And not being a fan of The Office, I would have gone with Boy Meets World for Pennsylvania.
Vahan 01-27-2014, 04:05 PM I would have picked Dragnet for California. It was one of the very first shows to film on-location in the state of California.
For Pennsylvania, I would have picked Mr. Belvedere.
McGillicuddy 01-27-2014, 04:17 PM Where ever possible I definitely would have picked a scripted drama or situation comedy, over a reality show.
I never knew the distinction between Hawaii 5-O and Hawaii 5-0. The original should represent Hawaii.
Rosslover 01-27-2014, 11:34 PM The only show for Texas was brought back to life three seasons ago and that is Dalas..New York would be Friends or Sex and the City... Washington DC is Scandal...There are a lot of shows that could claim Illinois....one would be Chicago Fire...
MacLeaper 01-28-2014, 02:32 PM For Illinois, I'd go with Early Edition.:) (Chicago is prominently seen throughout the show and the L train is particularly featured. Gary is always busy running around the streets of Chicago, saving people from certain disaster and doom. Of course, Gary is originally from Hickory, Indiana- and it is depicted at least once, but the show is primarily set in Chicago, IL.)
And Indiana could be Quantum Leap, since Sam is from Elk Ridge, Indiana. (But he travels all over the world in his Leaps, so it's hard to pin that show down to one place. Project Quantum Leap is located in New Mexico though- so it could fit for that state too.)
And for California, I'd go with MacGyver.:) (But MacGyver is originally from Mission City, Minnesota- so it could be a Minnesota show too.)
tvfreak1987 02-03-2014, 01:08 AM Definitely would've picked Home Improvement for my home state as well (though I'm not a fan). Simply because no other show set in MI was ever nearly as popular.
For Illinois, I probably would've gone with Roseanne. And I barely even knew Parks and Rec was set in Indiana. I would've picked One Day at a Time for that state. For NY, I actually would've picked The Honeymooners, simply because I Love Lucy wasn't set in NY for the entire series (they moved to CT towards the end; not to mention the Hollywood season). Texas should be Dallas, I agree.
I never knew "My Secret Identity " was set in Nebraska! Since it was filmed in Canada I've always just thought of it as a Canadian show!
North Dakota. And I bet for Canadian airings it was set in, like, Saskatchewan or something.
Furienna 02-03-2014, 06:30 PM As I haven't even heard about many of these shows, I would make some changes too. Here I'm going to try to list shows, which nobody has mentioned so far in this thread.
New York: "The Cosby show", "The Nanny", "Grounded for life".
California: "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", "Alf", "Full House".
Illinois: "Family Matters", "Kenan & Kel".
Colorado: "Dynasty", "Dr Quinn".
Wisconsin: "Step by step", "That '70s show".
Michigan: "Sister, sister", "8 simple rules".
andress_jade 02-03-2014, 08:36 PM I Dream of Jeannie also took place in Florida. Cocoa Beach to be exact.
Home Improvement took place in Detroit, Michigan.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air also took place in California.
I also think Mr. Belvedere took place in either Michigan or Wisconsin.
DJM77 02-03-2014, 08:40 PM I also think Mr. Belvedere took place in either Michigan or Wisconsin.
No, it was Pennsylvania.
andress_jade 02-03-2014, 08:48 PM No, it was Pennsylvania.
Oops, my bad. Thanks! :D
Ohio8 02-07-2014, 12:32 AM Mama's Family should have been Missouri. Although I don't know if it was ever confirmed that Raytown was in Missouri.
Raytown is a suburb of Kansas City.

Based on IMDb ratings, Breaking Bad is unsurprisingly tops in New Mexico, while Arrested Development is No. 1 in California.
Furienna 04-28-2015, 01:24 AM Here are some new suggestions from me:
California: "That's so Raven", "Two and a half men", "Hangin' with Mr Cooper"
Florida: "Empty Nest"
Massachusettes: "Sabrina the teenage witch", "The practice"
Pennsylvania: "Boy meets world"
Washington D.C. : "Murphy Brown", "Smart guy"
Bonniegirl 05-01-2015, 01:49 PM Yes Alice for Arizona and Dallas for Texas and Waltons for Virginia
Yong Fang 05-05-2015, 07:47 AM The best show from Tennessee.....HEE HAW!
MrCleveland 05-05-2015, 02:20 PM I like Family Ties...and it's interesting that the Big Three Station has an Ohio show...CBS has WKRP and for Cincinnati, NBC has Family Ties and it's set in Columbus, and ABC has Drew Carey Show which I think is watched a lot in the Cleveland area....
biffbronson 05-11-2015, 12:05 AM For Florida, Miami Vice is worth a mention as a big hit.
For Illinois, I would go with The Bob Newhart Show (set in Chicago) -- although Bob's later series Newhart was already a given for Vermont.
I agree with those who've already supported One Day at a Time and The Middle for Indiana. And Gunsmoke for Kansas, Cheers for Massachusetts, and Dallas for Texas are all locks -- truly overlooked by the map creators.
Schmoopie 05-11-2015, 01:29 AM The Middle should have represented Indiana, much better than Parks and Recreation and higher ratings.
I completely agree because that show almost revolves around the state of Indiana!
