Well it had been just a few years before that Mary Tyler Moore had to convince network execs that she should wear slacks on "Dick Van Dyke". Plus, TV shows in those days had a very idealized version of teenage girls, so they may have thought Cathy looked too "tomboyish" in jeans.

Cathy was made up to be the feminine type. Patty was the slightly rough around the edges, tomboy type.

I cannot picture Cathy "adoring a minuet, the Ballets Russes and Crepes Suzette" in 1964-style pedal-pushers! Much less Patty doing a frug in a ball gown...fortunately, Juniorite, the fashion provider for Patty and Cathy, must have offered a full line of fashions that covered the whole spectrum of teeny-bopper styles!

Funny you should mention that - I googled Juniorite Inc, the other day and they're still in business...

The season that's airing now though has the fashions coming from Orbachs...They were HUGE back in the day - almost every show on TV utilized them....

Oh, you're welcome! I got interested in this after I read where Patty said she hated the clothes she had to wear, LOL!! They did look kinda "dowdy", but that's what was worn back then...I had a few "jumpers" myself...and the pleated skirts? Yup....basic staples of the closet..

I think it was Let's Make a Deal that had a whole wardrobe or some other piece of clothing from Orbach's as one of the prizes you could win, but they were all over the tv canvas back then providing wardrobes to the stars...Just check out the closing credits - and I don't think they were cheap either...

Orbach was HUGE when it comes to bringing fashion to 60's TV. Besides The Patty Duke Show, I think the cast of the gothic soap Dark Shadows and The Donna Reed Show got outfitted in the brand.

You make a good point. The thought just came to me after rewatching some episodes where I see Pat freely walking around in slacks while Cath gets stuck in dresses.

Never knew that about MTM. You would think with Lucille Ball wearing pants on I Love Lucy years earlier their wouldn't be any hesitation.

MTM had mentioned that women all over the U.S. wore pants at home, so it was a natural for TDVDS. There was concern later though that her Capri slacks were a might bit revealing ("cupping") of her posterior area...!

I think the idea behind Cathy's dresses & skirts was in keeping with her image of sophistication, vs. the "typical U.S. teen" for Patty.

The late Miss Duke said more than once, that she preferred playing the thoughtful, sedate, mature Cathy to the obnoxious, high-strung, live-wire Patty so I presume she was willing to lump having the less attractive wardrobe to do so! Of course, she also admitted that the 'polar opposite girls' idea came from her own extremes in tempermant (and this was years before she was officially diagnosed as bi-polar) .

I like when Patty & Cathy wear the same dress BUT one has maybe a big collar and attached do-dads vs the more plain one - I'm sure it made the dress swapping much easier ...
