Jackie and Roseanne both over-reacted to Roseanne spanking D.J. in "The Driver's Seat" episode where he stole the car. D.J. deserved what he got. All she did was spank him. It's not like she really beat him up. I'm with Dan, it was no big deal. And if what Roseanne did was exactly like what their father did, then their childhood was no that brutal. What do you think about it? Do you think D.J. had it coming and what Roseanne did was no big deal? Or do you think that Roseanne went way too far and was really brutal on D.J. and was right to apologize?

All she did was spank him. 4 swats, come one. She certainly should not have apologized. I hate that episode.

I agree both Rosanne and Jackie made too big a deal. If that had been me who took the car, my dad would have took the strap to me and I would have deserved it, just as DJ deserved it.

DJ was an absolute swine of a kid in the later Seasons and deserved a good box around the ears many a time!

I agree 100% with all of you. Roseanne shouldn't have apologized to D.J, he deserved every ounce of what he got. Both Roseanne and Jackie made too huge of deal out of the matter. I hate this episode.

All I know is that I would have gotten a lot worse than what D.J. got. What business did he have doing that? He's lucky that's all he got.

Isnt kind of odd that they kind of rewrote there father in later years? I mean he seemed like an old softy, kind of happy go lucky. Then, when he wasnt seen anymore on the show, he cheated on his wife and was this abusive father.

I wasn't too crazy about that rewrite. It did make for more dramatic storyline, though. Dan's mother's background was rewritten along with some things added as well.

The actor only appeared in two episodes so I believe that this was done to explain his departure.

Well, you may have a point, Shamelessgirl. I wonder. I think shows have to be careful going that route with the changing and revamping of history, though.

Agreed. The show had several plot holes like this where things didn't make any sense.

They retconned a lot of things later on that don't make sense if you've seen earlier seasons. Weirdest for me: how did Lonnie go from having black hair to having blond hair? What, they couldn't find a kid with the same color hair as the first actor? Seriously?

I agree that was strange. Maybe Lonnie dyed his hair blonde later as he went into his teenage years and became rebellious.

I love Roseanne as a comic, and I'm usually on the liberal side, but on some subjects she's absolutely loony-tunes and apparently she wanted to insert some silly anti-spanking theme in the series, to her (IMO) great discredit; especially coming from someone with the pretensions of representing the working class.

Well, this is what happens when you come from another country, I guess. But here in Sweden, spanking hasn't been legal since 1979. And I agree with that law, so a lot of the posts in the thread just scare me. Even if DJ had done something very wrong, there have to be other ways to cope with it than spanking him.

Now I don't necessarily agree with spanking children, I just didn't like how Roseanne acted like she had viciously beaten him black and blue when all she did was hit him on the butt a few times. I agree that she shouldn't have done that in a fit of anger but she really didn't do him that much harm. I totally understand her apologizing to him but being all guilty and depressed over it was a little ridiculous.

As I remember it, she was really afraid of becoming like her father. After all, every case of abuse starts with one first blow.

I didnt like how they made the father this evil monster. I mean he wasnt like that when he was on the show during the early seasons. Also, I dont condone spanking, but I couldnt stand DJ sometimes. I dont think he deserved a spanking in this particular case but he was always asking dumb questions and being kind of whiney.
