Alison Sweeney Announces She's Leaving "Days of Our Lives"

"Days of Our Lives" star Alison Sweeney made a major announcement on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" Monday: She's leaving the soap opera after 21 years.

"I decided that it's going to be my last year with the show," Sweeney told Ellen. "I've been on Days of Our Lives since I was 16 years old, and I have never had more than a two-week vacation in that whole time."



Sweeney said the decision was not an easy one.

"I love my job, I love daytime, I love the fans. I love everything about it," she told Ellen. "I just work so much and my daughter just turned 5 and my son is 9 and I just want to be with them."



Though the actress is not sure when her last episode will air, she insisted she'll be on the show throughout this year.

But, she added, she's torn between whether her character Sami should get a happy ending or "deserves some sort of very twisted, like, Breaking Bad ending. She's caused a lot of people a lot of problems."

I'm a huge fan of Sami (Alison) and DAYS and I wish her nothing but the best in her life! I hope they end her role with an awesome cliffhanger that is so "Sami classic drama". I also hope they don't kill her so if she wants to return she can, if only for a special appearance here and there.

Sami is def one of daytime's best characters EVER created and she could ONLY be played by the talented Alison Sweeney!

Sami (Alison) has been on DOOL for 21 years. I remember her as a teenager. I will surely miss her. She's an awesome actress. DOOL would do well not to kill her off. She'll probably just dump E.J. after she learns of his affair with Abby. She'll most likely take the kids and go back to Lucas. Maybe they'll go off to Hong Kong together. A possible Lucas/Sami reunion? :)

As far as I know, Lucas isn't leaving the show any time soon...he's just now starting a relationship with Sheryl.

At least we have one more year of Sami...let's enjoy every second!

I actually think she'll end up in jail for something she did in the past or something new that hasn't happened yet. Nick could possibly be the reason she ends up in jail....because I don't think he's really dead!

I think your idea sounds more plausible, but I'd like to think of Sami being with Lucas since she's known him since she was sixteen. I wonder if Will would want his parents back together.

I suppose they won't replace her with another actress. Nobody could fill Allison's shoes as Sami!

As sorry as I am to see Alison leave the show I very much admire and respect the reason why she's leaving, to spend more time with her children!

I agree. It'll be sad to see her go but I'm happy about the reason she's doing it. I have a lot of respect for Alison. Maybe she'll come back and make special appearances here and there.
