I was a kid in the '60's and I can remember watching My Mother The Car on TV when it was new. I recently got the DVD set and boy was I surprised to see the show was in color! I have thought all these years My Mother The Car was a b/w show because that was the only way I had ever seen it (we didn't get a color TV till 1967). What a pleasant surprise, I had no idea. I wonder how many other shows I just assume are b/w but are really color because of my b/w tv memories. ;)

I think it's another show that was made when TV was going from b/w to color and some episodes are in color and some are in b/w

I think being in color made it really good. The bright red old car was beautiful!! Wouldn't have been the same seeing it in black and white!

The Lucy Show started filming in color in season 2 although it continued to air in black and white for at 2 more seasons since so few people had color TV sets in the early 60's. So on the DVD's only season one is in B&W and season 2 and later are in color.

Only 5% of households in 1965 had a color TV; it wouldn't be until 1972 that most homes had a color TV.

Our family must have been in that 95% of b/w only households. I remember in 1967 the first TV show I saw in color was the Superman cartoons that were on on Saturdays. Wow, I can still remember seeing Superman flying in color, it was very exciting in '67. Kids today aren't even interested in watching those great toons.

The final season of both WML and O&H were in color. For WML, the color tapes supposedly no longer exist (or videotapes of the live episodes were not made)--Goodson/Todman or CBS kept only the black and white kinescopes. Probably the same thing happened with IGOS and the nighttime version of To Tell the Truth.

It's lucky the kinescopes were retained. The huge majority of all 876 WML episodes still exist.

We didn't get a color TV until 1975. A Zenith 25 inch console that cost I think around 500 bucks which was big money back in those days. My dad saved for years to get that and it was a big deal. Previously we had been using a 20 inch Zenith B/W with rabbit ears from the mid to late 60's on a rolling stand. No cable but we had an outdoor antenna with a rotor which was pretty cool because we could aim it at a couple other bigger cities and get some of their channels. We were actually in the minority in our neighborhood with an outdoor antenna because you could easily pick up the local PBS,NBC,ABC and CBS channels with just the rabbit ears. TV's were very expensive back then and having more than 1 was somewhat of a luxury. I still have my 12 inch b/w Zenith from 1977 believe it or not. It still works and watch over the air old shows on it occasionally. Brings back memories.

It really is great in color. Every show I watched was in black and white since my dad didn't buy a color tv until after I left home. Me & my husband bought a Curtis Mathis color tv in 1979 and a Curtis Mathis VCR a little later. Wouldn't want to go back to a black & white set.

Why would you think the show wasn't in color just because you saw it in B&W?

Only one family on my block had a color tv back in the mid 60s.

Happy for those who want vintage shows in color and have it. I’m on the fence with show 1965 and after.

But for the 50s shows I prefer them in B & W. When I saw a colorized I Love Lucy ep it just didn’t feel authentic. But that’s just me as I know legions have been clamoring for these shows to be colorized. And many have - so now everyone can have what they want. Happy viewing!:wave:

Top Cat and the first two seasons of The Flintstones were filmed in color but originally seen only in black-and-white (like The Lucy Show seasons 2 and 3).

Interestingly enough, 'The Cisco Kid' (1950-1956) WAS originally filmed in color- despite the fact that it was specifically produced for television but sold to individual stations via syndication. Of course, it would take a few years for there to be television stations that were willing to spend the monies to broadcast shows in color. Hence, most if not all the show's original viewers ONLY saw it in black-and-white for quite some time.
