View Full Version : The Bob Newhart Show - Complete Series JAlanRuss72 01-09-2014, 08:29 PM http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/news/Bob-Newhart-The-Complete-Series/19337 tlc38tlc38 01-09-2014, 08:37 PM I was just coming here to post this!! I hope they also release seasons 5 & 6 individually. If they don't a lot of people will be angry! Vahan 01-09-2014, 08:58 PM I remember a while back, bencasey gave a wink when someone asked about Shout Factory releasing the final two seasons. I interpreted it as meaning that they are gonna release them. Looks like I was right. I wonder if he, or at least friends of his, have connections with all the major Hollywood studios? McGillicuddy 01-09-2014, 09:37 PM I was just coming here to post this!! I hope they also release seasons 5 & 6 individually. If they don't a lot of people will be angry! The fifth and sixth seasons will be released separately, later on. Just like Barney Miller and Dobie Gillis. TVFactFan 01-09-2014, 09:40 PM The fifth and sixth seasons will be released separately, later on. Just like Barney Miller and Dobie Gillis. It says the complete series will be released for $129 PGood97041 01-09-2014, 10:26 PM WHOOT, WHOOT! THIS IS GREAT NEWS! YES!!!! robyrob 01-09-2014, 10:36 PM this is good news - but I'm going to wait for the individual 5 and 6 releases McGillicuddy 01-09-2014, 10:42 PM I think I'll get rid of my single season (double-sided disc) releases 1-4. Hopefully the complete series will have extras. I know Bob Newhart, himself is eager to participate in any kind of interview or commentaries. tlc38tlc38 01-09-2014, 10:50 PM I'm still debating if I want to buy the separate 5 & 6 seasons or buy the new complete series set. I'll wait til more details are released before I preorder. TVFactFan 01-09-2014, 11:00 PM why the hell would someone buy the individual seasons of 5 and 6 if they have the option of buying the entire series? PGood97041 01-09-2014, 11:06 PM I'm so happy about this I just preordered! Can't wait for May 27! I had bought Seasons 5 and 6 of TBNS bootleg and now am purchasing the whole set. Sure, waiting probably makes more financial sense, but to me getting higher quality versions of the great S 5 and 6 eps, and standardized packaging for the whole series, is worth the price. I guess I just don't want to wait any longer ... although I totally understand those of you who ARE going to do that. Anyway, I'm just thrilled everybody who wants it now has, or will have, access to the whole series. In fact, maybe my preorder is kind of a thank-you to Shout for finally putting it out! tlc38tlc38 01-09-2014, 11:18 PM why the hell would someone buy the individual seasons of 5 and 6 if they have the option of buying the entire series? Because I, like most fans of TBNS, already own seasons 1-4. TVFactFan 01-09-2014, 11:34 PM Because I, like most fans of TBNS, already own seasons 1-4. Is there going to be a individual release? PGood97041 01-10-2014, 01:05 AM I feel very lucky that my five favorite sitcoms of all-time are now all completely out on DVD. Fans of other shows are still waiting. Of course, there was some hard work involved, too. I was one of the people who badgered 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment into finishing The Mary Tyler Moore Show release, and one of those who tried to get a new set of execs to fully release The Bob Newhart Show, which didn't happen nearly as quickly. They were none too happy when I put their email addresses on Amazon.com, I can tell you that much. Ah, memories. But do we give 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment any credit for at least finally releasing the series to Shout Factory? ajgenard 01-10-2014, 03:54 AM But do we give 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment any credit for at least finally releasing the series to Shout Factory? Zero. 20th Century F**ks Home Entertainment gets zero credit from me. They farted around with this show for 8 friggin years to the point where it became a poster child of stalled TV shows on DVD - and it doesn't even have the excuse of pricey music rights like a lot of stalled shows do. So they finally relent and Shout Factory manages to pry it from their hands. BTW, I'm sure Fox will hand over the same dull, outdated masters to Shout and the new DVDs will be just as underwhelming as the first ones. Anything more than that, I might give Fox a smidgen of credit. CAJeannieFan57 01-10-2014, 09:47 AM If you read the TVShowsonDVD.com release, it says: "What about individual season sets of Season 5 and Season 6, for those who've collected the first four season packs? Clearly we have no word about that, as Shout! hasn't formally released info to the media about any of this. However, there's no reason to believe that they wouldn't take the discs from those season from the big set, and make them available separately later on." I will wait for the other 2 seasons to come out, unless there are some really good extras. Donna tlc38tlc38 01-10-2014, 10:03 AM I went ahead and bit the bullet and preordered the set with Amazon just in case the price drops extremely low. And, if I want, I can always cancel the order. PGood97041 01-10-2014, 09:55 PM Atta boy! That's quite the collection you've got there, by the way, but there are more than a few series that appear to be stuck, release-wise. I feel fortunate that I now will have my favorite five complete: The Honeymooners, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. There are quite a few more sitcoms that I would buy, but I don't have nearly enough time to watch the above classics as it is. Maybe in retirement! zypherix 01-10-2014, 10:11 PM 2014 is off to a good start :) For me, I'll buy the entire series despite owning seasons 1-4 already. Bought em on sale anyway.. so didnt really spend much. tlc38tlc38 01-10-2014, 10:25 PM That's quite the collection you've got there, by the way, but there are more than a few series that appear to be stuck, release-wise. Thanks! It's taken a lot of time and money to build up my collection. I'm actually putting my TV on DVD buying on hiatus for a while (with the exception of a few releases that I've waited a long time for) so I can pay off my credit card. Another plus for anyone that already owns seasons 1-4 and are thinking about waiting on separate season 5 & 6 releases--these re-releases of seasons 1-4 won't be double-sided discs. YAY! :happyface TV_Fan 01-10-2014, 11:02 PM Another plus for anyone that already owns seasons 1-4 and are thinking about waiting on separate season 5 & 6 releases--these re-releases of seasons 1-4 won't be double-sided discs. YAY! :happyface Nowhere has it yet been said that the re-release will be single sided discs. Anyone familiar with Shout Factory's past releases knows they are far from perfect. I wouldn't make any assumptions about anything regarding this release. tlc38tlc38 01-10-2014, 11:34 PM Nowhere has it yet been said that the re-release will be single sided discs. Anyone familiar with Shout Factory's past releases knows they are far from perfect. I wouldn't make any assumptions about anything regarding this release. To my knowledge, I don't think Shout! has ever released a season set with double-sided discs. I think it's safe to assume these will be single-sided discs...but I could be wrong. McGillicuddy 01-11-2014, 05:40 PM I hope the box set includes "The 19th Anniversary Special" of The Bob Newhart Show, from 1991. TVFactFan 01-11-2014, 05:44 PM I hope the box set includes "The 19th Anniversary Special" of The Bob Newhart Show, from 1991. don't get greedy:lol:   McGillicuddy 01-11-2014, 06:04 PM To my knowledge, I don't think Shout! has ever released a season set with double-sided discs. I think it's safe to assume these will be single-sided discs...but I could be wrong. I don't think any company is releasing double-sided discs, anymore. Too many people complained. I think FOX , Universal and Warner are the only ones that did this. Shout! never released double sided discs. PGood97041 01-12-2014, 02:02 AM Uh-oh. Did Amazon already take the preorder down? ajgenard 01-12-2014, 04:04 AM Uh-oh. Did Amazon already take the preorder down? No it's still there. It's just not showing up in the search. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HRUQB5O?tag=tvshowsondvdcom&link_code=as3&creativeASIN=B00HRUQB5O&creative=373489&camp=211189 esb100 01-13-2014, 10:31 PM The 19th Anniversary show would make a great extra. Another extra should be the 1994 sixth season episode of Murphy Brown, "Anything But Cured," in which Marcia Wallace plays Carol Bondurant, serving as Murphy's secretary. Newhart then appears as Bob Hartley, begging Carol to come back and work for him. As two shows in which Newhart played Bob Hartley, these would look very nice on the complete series set. I dont know who owns the Murphy Brown series, but something could be workef out, as is the case for CD retrospective box sets of bands which have been on 4 or 5 record labels, where arrangements are made for all of the labels' music to appear on the box set. Bob also played Bob Hartley on a Saturday Night Live skit and, of course, the legendary final episode of "Newhart," so perhaps those could be included, too. CAJeannieFan57 01-19-2014, 08:25 PM I have some GREAT news for all those purchasing the TBNS Complete Series: There WILL be at least one extra that will include Bob, Bill, Peter, and one of the lesser known directors (Mike somebody) in a cast interview. I guess the three main men really missed Suzanne, Marcia, and Tom Poston, saying this should have been done when they were all still around. (So true.) It was quite lengthy and filmed in LA not all that long ago, according to my VERY reliable source. (Please don't ask who my source is, as this person asked me not to say. Just know that it is someone VERY close to the show.) Jack Riley is suffering both from MS and from Alzheimer's. He was invited, and they brought him in, but he was not able to contribute since he really was not aware of where he was, nor who he was with. As I told my source, this is SO sad to hear! I guess the remaining cast was glad, but surprised, to see that Shout Factory was putting out this set up, and with extras. However, my source was not aware whether the extras would include anything besides the interview filmed, and the 6 seasons of episodes. Donna esb100 01-20-2014, 11:54 AM Great news, Donna, on the interview extra. And a shame about Jack Riley -- I didn't know about his awful health issues. When I read your post my wife and I had just watched High Anxiety, featuring Jack doing a great Jack Benny impression in calling out to the bellboy ("Oh Dennis"). My kids, of course, know him as the voice of Stu Pickles. As to the season set -- would you be able to check with your source on the 19th Anniversary Show as a suggested extra? It's really an additional episode of the series and thus perfect for a series set. And as I noted above, being that the 1994 Murphy Brown episode features Bob and Marcia playing their Bob Newhart Show characters, that would make a great extra, too, if that's something that could be brought up to your source. I don't mean to be presumptuous in stating that I know what should be referred to your source as constituting good extras, but we've all heard the stories that sometimes it's the fans who know this stuff more that the studios issuing the release CAJeannieFan57 01-20-2014, 12:13 PM Yes, fans often know what would be great extras. Unfortunately, though, we don't always know the other things involved, such as the cost of obtaining such rights, how much they'd add to the set's sale-ability, condition of the product (such as the 19th Anniversary special) and how much it would take to bring it up to speed, etc. Frankly, I'm not sure that my source would have that info, either. But I'll ask. (Can't hurt.) tlc38tlc38 01-22-2014, 09:07 AM After waiting SOOO long for seasons 5 & 6 to be released, I think people are still in disbelief that this is really happening (same goes for '66 Batman) ...that must be why the boards are silent. ikhuri 01-22-2014, 09:24 AM Will the 1971 pilot be one of the extras on the set? Imad McGillicuddy 01-26-2014, 03:05 PM Oddly, The Pilot of The Bob Newhart Show ended up being the ninth episode of the first season. tlc38tlc38 02-03-2014, 08:48 PM Box art is here: http://tvshowsondvd.com/news/Bob-Newhart-The-Complete-Series/19428 ajgenard 02-04-2014, 07:34 PM Yikes that artwork is minimalist to the point of laziness. It's the same stock photo that was used for the cancelled season 5 release from Fox, only the diploma on the wall looks clone stamped out in Photoshop and the font is the actual Cooper font instead of a generic one. Maybe it will look better in person... After such a long wait I'm not gonna complain too much about cover art. PGood97041 02-06-2014, 04:10 PM Yeah, the cover art matters not to me. I'm a content guy. Those of you who are familiar with Shout Factory, do we think we're getting ALL the content? As in all the scenes and all the tags? zypherix 02-07-2014, 09:06 AM Shout USUALLY manages to keep a good record with completeness, but they did mess up Newhart season two with 2 syndicated prints. McGillicuddy 02-14-2014, 01:06 AM Shout USUALLY manages to keep a good record with completeness, but they did mess up Newhart season two with 2 syndicated prints. Shout can only work with what FOX gives them!! zypherix 02-14-2014, 06:32 AM Indeed. But hopefully the Bob Newhart Show should be allright :) CAJeannieFan57 02-15-2014, 12:27 PM My source is not aware of what else might be included as the extras with the Complete Series -- nor does this person have any say-so about what should be included. Sorry ... zypherix 02-20-2014, 07:48 AM Someone asked on Facebook, and Shout mentioned the discs being single-sided :) tlc38tlc38 02-23-2014, 09:33 PM Someone asked on Facebook, and Shout mentioned the discs being single-sided :) I kind of expected that but it's good for it to be confirmed. I hated those double-sided discs in the original sets. This is enough to make me want to upgrade. Have we heard anything about what the extras will be? Extras to include The 19th Anniversary Show AND Original Unaired Pilot, which I didn't know existed! spunkygirl 04-09-2014, 02:58 PM why the hell would someone buy the individual seasons of 5 and 6 if they have the option of buying the entire series? Even if Shout! ships it out a month earlier, it's still better for me to save a few bucks. PGood97041 05-30-2014, 03:31 PM Got my set yesterday and watched a couple of eps last night. The quality was very good and all the content was there, which is more important to me. I thought the day might never come, but I'm extremely happy to have a complete set of the great "The Bob Newhart Show". Thanks to Shout! Not sure what I was doing that night in 1991 or why I missed this but I've wanted to see it for years. I'd recommend casual or new fans to watch this in it's proper place after the series, but being well familiar with the show it was a nice "wet my whistle" for the episode feast I have coming :) I then watched the unaired pilot. It was a well done and funny show about Bob and Emily considering adoption. In it Jerry was not a dentist but a fellow psychiatrist. Finally, I watched "Group Therapy", the round-table discussion with Bob, Peter Bonerz, Bill Daily, Jack Riley and Michael Zinberg. It was interesting, but Bob dominated the discussion, often with oft-told antidotes. Peter and Michael did get some interesting bits in there, Bill Daily had a hard time getting a word in edgewise. Jack Riley, while extremely frail, did not appear to me as previously described "to not know who he was with". Although he had difficulty speaking, he seemed to be following and enjoying the discussion. I so wish Marcia could have been there, she would have definitely curtailed Bob's screen time :happyface I haven't started on the episodes yet, but knowing these are the complete episodes I haven't seen since I was in school and knowing what to expect quality-wise from others I know this will be my happiest DVD purchase of the year. So cool timing that they were released a few weeks before my birthday and I saw them on sale at B&N right before. I didn't hesitate :) tommy b 09-14-2014, 10:55 AM I purchased the Bob Newhart release last Saturday, and was in receipt of it just earlier today.
