Have to let it dry out,it was put in the garbage pile @ salvation army,it was outside and had semi frozen water on the box (NOT AS BAD SHAPE AS OTHERS IN THAT BOX THEY WERE ALL IN THOUGH) ...... I HOPE ITS OK,GONNA LET IT DRY COMPLETLY BEFORE I TRY TO VIEW IT...... I checked the tape inside and it looks ok.....

I got the ORIGINAL Doctor Doolittle yesterday @ salvation army (1967)

It had been outside in the freezing cold gabage pile since shortly after christmas!! (Ice,snow all over it,etc) I finally decided to get it when I was there.. (Eventually they will haul all that off to the dump (Its amazing that pile has been there so long! (ITS HUGE AND GETTING BIGGER!!))) I was gonna pay for it but the lady gave it to me FREE saying she didnt know if it was gonna work (Being outside for weeks)..... (It should,the tape itself IS FINE!! (Luckily it was protected inside the big case its in))

Amazingly the tape itself IS IN EXCELLENT SHAPE (No water,etc inside where the tape is) I looked @ the tape inside the case also and she looks good!!

I would NOT WANT TO SEE THE REMAKE OF THIS MOVIE which I just know is a piece of garbage compared to this original!!

I like Eddie Murphy but not when he ruins good things!! (I think its sickening when they take a GOOD MOVIE and remake it into a piece of crap!! (Bottom line is: They have NOTHING GOOD TO MAKE ANYMORE so they ruin good stuff!!))

I'm on my 3rd laser disc player. Unfortunately I've lost several laser discs to laser rot. My favorite laser disc I have is the Phantasm signed and numbered boxed set which comes with the soundtrack on CD.
Also have a few lasers not yet on DVD like Eyes Of Fire (1983).

I think it's expensive even for today haha back then though I was a little more free with my money when it came to movies.

When DVDs arrived, and all of the places closed out their LDs, I bought a bunch for really cheap.

I was looking at Ebay just now, and I found a laserdisc copy of the first film. Here's the back of it:

But at least it's analog with no digital whatsoever. I thought you'd be happy to know that.

It should also be noted that on later laserdiscs, they offered the consumer both separate analog and digital tracks, along with this message:

"This laserdisc is encoded with stereo digital sound, in addition to the high quality picture and CX encoded analog soundtracks of conventional laserdiscs."

I got the movie Basic Instinct Today :) (1992)

Luckily its the original release of this movie as the one in 1996 was recorded IN SLP (EP) MODE!! (Probably horrible quality) The one I have is in SP mode...

I looked it up on amazon and that copy was recorded IN EP!! (YUK!!)

My friend and I went record shopping the other day around Greenwich Village. He's into vinyls like I'm into movies.

We randomly found this small Used CD and DVD store and it was like an episode of "Hoarders" when we walked in. The guy had DVDs, CDs and VHS tapes stacked literally from the floor to the ceiling all over the place and we could barely get around. It was almost impossible to look around because we had the issue of how to get it if we wanted to see something.



I did manage to spot something I wanted all the way at the top of one of the shelves. I climbed a ladder to get it and paid $4.99 for Little Witches (1996) on VHS.

The DVD is long out of print.

He said he could do it and we agreed on 200 VHS for $100.00

Just ordered the 12 movie DVD set: Top Of The Class.

The only films in the set I've seen are The Young Graduates (which came in the Drive-In Cult Classics Vol. 4 8 movie DVD set), Liar's Moon, and Cheerleaders Beach Party.

I found quite a few classic movies in the bargain bin at Barnes and Noble.
I bought Back to the Future, How to Marry a Millionaire, Duck Soup, and A Night at the Opera.

Taking a cue from Donny (dude111), I got the 1983 VHS release of Pink Floyd The Wall.

But there is one thing that I'm not really 100% sure of. The VHS version says that it is stereo. But the betamax version has no mention of stereo whatsoever. What the hell is different about the betamax version in terms of audio?

For the record, neither of these versions are digitally mastered. But still, I think it is a question worth asking. Donny, I wonder if you own lots of films on betamax?

Because I lost my receipt, Uncle Wally's couldn't credit me for a wall fixture I didn't need, so they gave me a Gift Card for the amount it was worth. Since I'll have to pay for the item I might as well make the most of it. I bought three Echo Bridge "Shovelware" sets containing 25 movies and 19 WWII Documentaries along with Chasing Mavericks, Hachi and Red Dawn(Remake). :D

I think it was around 1985 when MGM/UA Home Video began releasing VHS/Beta tapes in digital, such as the first Home Video release of Gone with the Wind. Luckily, recent home video releases offer the the film's original mono track as an option.

Just a warning about laserdiscs. Laser rot. It can happen for no reason, and once it does the disc becomes unwatchable. I've lost a few movies to it. Some it starts gradually, you'll see a little bit of static throughout the movie, and each play it gets worse until it's unwatchable.

What about transferring it to DVD? Would that be the best way to preserve it?

That's what I've done with my favorite ones, and any that I buy. Wish I had thought of doing that with the ones that went bad, though some happened long before I burned DVDs.

Though I'm not sure if not playing the lasers will prevent them from progressing, I know some I went to play and they were already too far gone.

(Laserdisc is not 100% analog (It CAN include digital stuff also on the records while videodisc im pretty sure IS 100% ANALOG))

Wait a minute. I thought on later laserdiscs, they offered the option of either the analog or digital track. The LD version (not CED, LD) of BTTF 1 is also 100% analog. Also, take a look at this article. It mentions laserdiscs being 100% analog.

A word about quality here. I know that LDs essentially look like ginormous CD/DVD/BDs, and that we’ve all been trained to associate that weird wavy-rainbow-chrome with digital content, so you’d be forgiven for thinking that a 12-inch silver frisbee would naturally be full of 1s and 0s like a retro-future proto-DVD, but this is actually a common misconception. The truth is that laserdisc video is 100% analog. There’s an optional digital audio track, but by default the audio will be entirely analog as well. I have no idea how they fit the three tracks side-by-side in different formats on the same medium, I’m not a scientist, but I suspect it’s really clever in a 1978 kind of way.

Some do have the option, I looked on my laserdisc for Clear And Present Danger and it has the option for Analog or Digital.

I wasnt gonna get this @ first the other day as on the box it says "Recorded in Quality Extended Play" and that means SLP and the quality is usually crap!!

But Today I got it and when i put it in my VCR went to SP mode and I was happy!! (They must have @ 1 time recorded that movie in SLP but realised how bad it was and then did them in SP and just didnt change the box (Same thing I saw with FRIDAY THE 13th -- On that box it said EP/SLP but when I put it in,VERY HAPPY TO SEE IT WAS IN SP!! (Figured it was seeing the amount of tape on the spool (For both))))

I just cant figure out why these companies ever started putting movies IN ANYTHING BUT SP MODE!! (They arent saving anything if people dont like it!!)

There are two things I hate the most about problems with the way movies are presented on home video:

1) If the film, at least an older one, is in digital instead of analog.

2) If the film is sped-up, like with PAL for example. And some very early Home Video releases were even sped-up, regardless of region, in order to fit the 2-hour limit of a VHS or Beta tape. The first VHS/Beta release of Superman (1977) is an example of this.

Hey, speaking of Halloween, here's a challenge I have:

Trying finding a VHS or Beta copy of the VERY first edition of the film, as released by Meda Home Entertainment in around 1979. It won't be easy. Prices are astronomically high on eBay.

I stopped by a used Music/Movie store in the city today. I own all of these movies, but I got these to upgrade to newer editions. I may get rid off my standard DVDs since I got these now.

My 200 VHS deal fell through. The guy kept saying he was too busy to put it together and he'll "get back to me". I didn't hear back from him for weeks and he finally send me an e-mail saying "Soon..."

I told him to forget it and he agreed to refund my money.

I should have mentioned this before, but there were actually two different versions of the original Star Wars on the 20th Century Fox Video label. The first one was in a clamshell, and said "Video Rental Library". The second one was for regular sale, and in an oversized cardboard box.

The 20th Century Fox Video label didn't really last long. It only lasted for about 10 months from January-October 1982, before being replaced by CBS/Fox. TCFV was the successor to Andre Blay's Magnetic Video Corporation, which became a Fox company in 1980.

As you can see, even the tape labels look different.

I just got the movie THE GREAT ESCAPE today on VHS (1963),I didnt realise it was 2 tapes!!! (I swear we rented that movie from blockbuster in the 90s I think and it was only 1 tape! (It wasnt the original master though as @ the end there was that LETTERBOX crap) I hope this one doesnt have that garbage!! (Its a 1980 release (Put on the tape in 1983 by CBS/FOX))

When I was @ salvation army today I noticed a binfull of home made tapes that came in waiting to be brought inside... (They wont be put out cause they arent the official tapes and cant all be verified (TOO MANY)))

I saw a tape "The Fugitive" and I got it in hopes they had recorded it OFF ANALOG CABLE and in SP MODE.. (The copy I made in the 90s is in SLP mode)



Well....It IS recorded off analogue cable from the 90s from HBO in SP mode (Looks exactly like the one I made in the 90s from Pay Per view but sounds better :)) and it has that beautiful beggining HBO used to have!! (That city they go over)

Speaking of Back to the Future, it should be noted that both the 1986 RCA Caddy, and 1986 Laservision Videodisc versions of the film, used the exact same analog master. No digital mixing. So it is up to you to choose between the two different versions of the film.

Just look out for the possibility of "Laser Rot" on the latter. "Laser Rot" is a term used by laserdisc fanatics to refer to defective laserdiscs. I heard that the most problematic laserdisc is Eraser with Arnold Schwarzenegger, at least the USA one.

But look at it this way: Maybe you can get the next two Back to the Future films from analog Commercial-free Cable TV broadcasts.Yes I had forgotton about the original masters that pay channels had!

TODAY I LOOKED THRU THE BIN AGAIN @ Salvation army of those 'home made' tapes (NOT KNOWING WHEN IT WOULD BE TAKEN) AND GOT 'BACK TO THE FUTURE'!!!!!!! This has the date they recorded it on the cassette: 4/1/87 (Recorded in LP mode (@ least its not SLP mode)) Recorded from HBO...


IT IS GEORGEOUS!!!!!!! -- IT IS NOT DIGITALLY RECORDED TRASH LIKE IT IS ON VHS!!!!!! (Now If i can obtain a PAY CHANNEL copy of part 2 and 3 I would get rid of the digitally recorded copies I have which look like crap))

The audio isnt quite as good seeing its recorded in LP mode but its MUCH BETTER than the digitally recorded copies! (I dont like watching those,they do not look good to me --- I WANNA SEE THE ORIGINAL MOVIES!!)

Okay, now to find 100% analog copies of the next two films.Yes indeed my friend!!

And here's another Universal film I'd like to mention here:

I love the Problem Child movies, and I have been trying to find 1 & 2, in their original analog form. The end title track in the first film, as performed by The Beach Boys, sounded awful, like more emphasis was put on the vocals than on the instrumental tracks, kinda like a "loudness war" or something. At least on the prints of the film I see now. I have a feeling the MCA/Universal VHS versions may have also been the same exact things, as well.

I remember seeing the film many times on USA Cable, and I don't remember the title track sounding THAT bad, like it does now.

Those might be hard as they were released by MCA which started ruining thier VHS releases in 1990....

However I found a 1997 copy of Problem Child released by GOODTIMES VIDEO which does not say anything of digital!

Dude111, I was wondering if you could please do me a favor: Next time you buy a movie to add to your collection, or to watch one, please specify which version it is. If it is Home Video or television airing (with date of said television airing).

For example, the VHS versions of Tough Guys and Planes, Trains & Automobiles you got must be the ones released respectively in 1987 and 1988, both on Touchstone Home Video. Unfortunately, Touchstone Home Video releases don't really specify what years the Home Video versions came out; just the original years the films were released, similar to Disney Home Video releases.

Some Disney Video releases, though, have a print date on the spines of the tapes.

Well Planes,trains and automobiles IS NOT A TOUCHSTONE release.. It is a PARAMOUNT RELEASE.. (It has 1997 date on the tape itself but on the box it says 1990)

2) 9 to 5 - 1980 (I have this but this one I just got is the original CBS/FOX release in 1984 and is MUCH NICER! (The Original reel to reel master is on the tape opposed to the newer HOME VIDEO master on my 1995 copy.. (Better colours,etc)))

9 to 5 was first released on Video in 1981, not 1984. One of the last Fox titles from Magnetic Video, BTW.

And Rocky, I understand, first came out on RCA CED very early on in 1981. My only wish is that one day, you will own an RCA CED.

Like the CED I showed of The Great Escape, this one is from when Transamerica still owned United Artists. If you haven't guessed by now, I love United Artists logos. I think they had the best logos of all the Hollywood studios.

Ya I am seriously considering getting a videodisc player..... I found a ROCKY record! (And poltergeist (Which may be the only way to hear it totally analogue audio (As I did back then)))

The rocky I got yesterday wasnt very good.... Audio was crap and the picture wasnt very good either..... I didnt think it would be seeing it was MGM/UA and 1993 but I was hopefull since it didnt say "Digital video transfer".. It sounds like for the audio they tried to make it STEREO when that movie is MONO...... and the video looked alot like my 1995 copy of 9to5 (Not very pleasant)

Dude111, a bit off-topic, but have you ever heard of Heaven's Gate (1980)? It was an over-budget western directed by Michael Cimino, and starred Kris Kristofferson, Christopher Walken, John Hurt and Sam Waterston. It was a gigantic failure for Transamerica, who was forced to sell United Artists in late 1981 to MGM to cover their losses.

I know Heaven's Gate has its share of fans, and I don't really have a problem with that. But its failure is the main reason you don't see Transamerica's name on all of United Artist's 1967-1981 films anymore.

Dude111, here is something to keep in mind about RCA CEDs:

They would be color-coded, depending on which sound mix was used. White caddies were in mono, and blue caddies were in stereo. Like you said, Rocky I was originally in mono. It is presented like that on the RCA CED version of the film, which was, of course, in a white caddy.

Stereo VHS was introduced in 1982, and would be indicated by the "Stereo - Mono Compatible" or "Stereo - Rechanneled Mono" markings on the packaging.

Yesterday I got the original version of Tootsie (1982) on VHS :)

This is the original BEFORE THEY ADDED THAT LETTERBOX CRAP @ THE BEGINNING AND ENDING..... (And slight other changes)

The VHS version of Tootsie was actually released in 1985, and the RCA CED version was released about a couple of years ago in 1983. But I doubt there is anything different in both versions. I think both of them are identical.

Ya most likely Vahan.... They didnt start this LETTERBOX BS until the 90s i believe........ (Some older movies that were re-issued in the 90s had this crap added to them (Some were digitally compromised also))

Which is baffling, because on the original VHS release, there is NO mention of "Videophonic - Digitally Duplicated", like there would be on later MGM/UA tapes.

Well the one I got said VIDEOPHONIC on the box side and "Duplicated digitally" underneath....... (It was supposed to be an ORIGINAL 1982 release)

That's one of my favorite things about buying used tapes is when you find the video store stickers on the cases.

And I learned this from the film Rewind This:

You can tell a tape is used, if there is a lot of bad tracking during a certain scene. Because whoever owned it, would constantly rewind the tape to watch an interesting scene (a woman stripping, a ton of violence, etc.).

Dude111, if you can't find the next two Back to the Future films from analog commercial-free cable broadcasts, you might be able to find demo tapes of them. Or 16mm prints. Do you have a 16mm projector?

16mm prints may be expensive, but from what I can tell, they are certainly worth it. Some of them even have the original studio logos from when they were first released in theaters on 35mm format.

Sometimes, when films show up on a home video format for the first time, their original logos either get cut or replaced. For example: Virtually every United Artists film from 1967 to 1981 originally had references to Transamerica Corporation. Another example: The Terrytoon cartoons originally began with a 20th Century Fox logo.

Today I found the movie "Alien 4: Ressurection" (1997) -- THIS HAS GOTTA BE THE BEST OF THE 4 MOVIES!!!!!!!!

The copy I got someone had copied from a rental tape or something,it was excellent!!!!!! -- THIS IS THE FIRST MOVIE I HAVE EVER WATCHED THAT HAD "DOLBY DIGITAL" LISTED AS THE AUDIO SOURCE THAT SOUNDED AS GOOD AS IT DID IN ANALOG!!!!!! (And I wonder if its because of how it was transferred to the tape I bought @ salvation army (Which wasnt its offical tape)) -- Usually any movie I put in that says DOLBY DIGITAL,does not sound or look good in analog!

I think most movies that use Dolby DIGITAL use DOLBY SR (Special Recording) for analog,im not sure........... All I do know is ALOT OF MOVIES THAT USE "DOLBY DIGITAL" ARE NOT GOOD IN ANALOG!!

I went to Amoeba Records (great store!) in Hollywood, CA, and picked up the 1982 documentary The Compleat Beatles. Before the Anthology in the mid-1990's, this was the best way to learn everything there is to know about The Beatles. The film is less than 2-hours long. British actor Malcolm McDowell narrated this doc.

I made an error w/ my original post. I meant to say that it was originally a 3-hour miniseries but they edited it into a 90-minute film for the VHS.

I don't recall seeing Reagan in it, or it must have been a very small part. It's possible that his scenes were deleted/edited for the video release.

I went to Best Buy tonight and I bought the "Halloween: 35th Anniversary Edition" (Digibook) Blu-ray. I know that there is a complete series release coming up, but this particular release is a collector's item itself and is already OOP.

It was also the only one that they had in stock as all of the others were just the standard edition releases of the 35th Anniversary.

It's a mom-and-pop thrift store and the owner is pretty chill. I never get anything for nothing at the chain thrift stores like Goodwill or Salvation Army.

Today I was @ salvation Army and I found Star trek 1-5 (Seperate releases not the newer 6 pak of all star trek movies together)

I have thankfully been able to replace my star trek copies (1-5 (90s releases)) months ago with original releases which are MUCH BETTER! (Nothing digital in the transfer)

Well today I got the box for Star trek 5 as I have the original 1989 tape but I didnt have the original box....

Something told me to HOLD ONTO THAT TAPE I HAD (Not blindly replace it with the brand new copy (Unopened) I got today)

Looking @ the label on the tape I could tell it wasnt exactly the same..... I put it in and it was crap (Like the newer star trek 1-6,recorded the same way) They got rid of that stuff @ the beggining and the contrast was slighter darker....... I dont know if it was digitally transferred but it certainly wasnt as good as the other copy I found @ salvation army months ago!! (It was soaked,semi wet.. Left outside in the rain) -- I was hopefull I could save it...... I bought it and let it dry until the next day before trying it.........

So the copy I found today was a NEWER 1989 copy (Apparently after they started compromising the star trek movies)

Now the only one I dont have the original of is Star Trek 6 (1991) -- I dunno if its out there,probably not....... (Ill take the first 5 believe me -- MUCH NICER)

Its quite sad but Im glad I listenend to my instincts!!!!

Stopped by another yard sale today and the guy had a bunch of those cheap Region Free DVDs.

Today I got Close Encounters of the third Kind - 1977 on VHS :)

I was happy to spot this today... A couple weeks ago there was another copy of this movie there but it was a newer one that had been DIGITALLY MASTERED and I dont want that crap!!!!!

These 3 are excellent.

Yeah, I've seen those before but never got around to owning them. I haven't seen the other 2, but I love the book Perfume so I wanted to see how that was.

Regarding Manhunter, I like/dislike some things about it when compared to Red Dragon. I liked Tom Noonan's portrayal of the Tooth Fairy better than Ralph Fiennes. They were originally going to put Noonan in the body art paint for the Tooth Fairy's back tattoo, but Michael Mann said that "it didn't look right". Fiennes had it in Red Dragon.

I also prefer William Petersen over Edward Norton and Anthony Hopkins over Brian Cox. Brian Cox wasn't bad at all, but Hopkins is Lector.
