In practice no one outside of Hopewell in southside is ever pulled for anything under 10 over unless they are behaving stupidly. It's sort of the unspoken bargain. Virginia law makes driving 20 mph or over or >80 at any time to be reckless driving by statute. Of course the cop can always write it for 79 or something which happens frequently but as such they don't generally pull folks on interstates (most posted at 65 or 70) until they exceed 80.

The one wrinkle is when the General Assembly upped the maximum speed limit to 70 a few years back they didn't change the reckless statute so your cushion went to 10 mph before you're over 80.

Basically don't be stupid and don't go over 80 in Virginia and you'll be fine.

It should be noted that it's already state law to "Move over to let an overtaking vehicle pass" which is posted as "Slower Traffic Keep Right" but no one gets the message so evidently they want to force it. Or else O'Quinn does. Which is funny because I think he's from a rural area with no traffic.

It's not worth getting an officer killed (which I get).

Not where I'm at, unfortunately ("just" mid 70's here), but numerous locations in southeastern Virginia ("the tidewater") had temperatures at or over 80. Chesapeake was the leader at 84.

That was after an overnight period when it didn't really drop out of the upper 60's.

It's interesting if you look at the daily summary for Virginia Beach it was up to 80 and then the wind shifted off of the water (the seabreeze effect, which you don't usually see in December - lol) and temperature dropped back in the low 60s in like two hours. But a few miles inland it was still 80.

Still 66. Flood watches up and a chance of gusty thunderstorms. (one can hope!)

There was a flood watch here yesterday, even a warning for one of the smaller rivers in the county, and we got 1.40" of rain. At least 14" of potential snow all lost. :( To make matters worse, it was 33°F the entire time. Although even if it were below freezing, it just all would have been freezing rain which would have been a disaster. The closest real snowfall was over 100 miles north of here.

It also washed away the 9" of snow we had before.

It's not just the temperatures, dew points have been running in the 60's since yesterday. 850 mbar temperatures were like +16-17C yesterday. That would be upper 80's in summer. The NWS said Reagan National had never had H85 temperatures that warm this late on record. I suspect had there been more sunshine to mix it down (the central and northern part of the state got mid morning showers) it would have been 80 + there too.

No, like I said, it was 33 during the entire storm basically. Although at one point there was an incredible temperature gradient going on, right at the Ohio border there were stations at 57 degrees while less than 20 miles to the north it was at the freezing mark.

5 days out the models were showing an area of high pressure suppressing the system to the south and helping pump arctic air into the storm, and several runs of the european model showed us getting in excess of 20" of snow. Obviously the warm air won out and this came nowhere close to materializing. :(

It's been a fairly normal, if not a tad colder than usual winter here so far. It was a really long fall that very slowly trickled into winter. A lot of times the seasons change VERY rapidly around here, that was not the case in the second half of 2013.

Back then I was too young to do the decorating, so THAT didn't happen, it was literally just the tree.

There have been times when the winter was so cold and snowy I never got the chance to take them down until like March outside though, but they never actually were turned on after like mid-January.

That's kind of sad. And yet Dickensian in a way.

I rarely see that much up after New Years. There's always a few stragglers but most of the good stuff is down.

One exception: there was a dude off a highway last year who left his tree (inside - but in the window) up through April. And lit it every night. But took the outside stuff down.

:( That last part is pretty depressing. We never have the our stuff up even just a few days after Christmas. This year after Thanksgiving, we took them down a few days after my mom came over and went right to work on Christmas :lol: . Now starts a brief break until Valentines Day when those decorations go up.

Absolutely horrible, unless you're actually trying to buy a place. Granted we live in a very crappy area, but in 2005 our house was still worth a little over $70,000. Today it literally would go for about $5,000 if it could even be sold at all.

You can LITERALLY buy property in Detroit for $1. I've seen it a bunch of times, and it even has made national news as kind of a very sad and unfortunate joke. :lol:

As far as the city in general, there have been some improvements especially in the city center which has been pretty dramatic in the last 10 years or so, but the further away you get from downtown the less visible any changes are. In those areas, it kinda is like the snowball effect that has been going on for decades is just slowing down, not necessarily stopping or going uphill.
