View Full Version : Why did the audience applaud during the limbo?
WalterTheDrinker 12-05-2013, 01:47 PM At the very beginning of the episode about Viv's divorce, Maude, Walter, Viv, and her husband are doing the limbo and singing. Viv does the limbo, and the audience claps. Then a minute later, the four of them sing a few lines from a song and shake rattles, and then the audience claps again.
It didn't take much to impress that audience that night, huh?

No one knows what episode you are talking about since you didn't list the episode title or the youtube clip
boechsner 12-05-2013, 08:11 PM I know! This thread refers to the Season 1 episode The Perfect Marriage.
Vivian and Chuck are still married and announce they are getting a divorce to Maude and Walter.
Sitcoms back then, I believe had a warm up comedian before the show began. Perhaps the audience was really worked up over that.

Thank you, boechsner! You really know your stuff! You're exactly right!
Real Maude fans know what episode "Viv's divorce" refers to.

And that is what you created a thread topic about? The audience applauding a performance by the cast?
Go to sleep:lol:

Yes, this warrants discussion. Neither of those two moments deserved applause. Viv didn't exactly limbo under a low bar (umbrella). And the second applause was preposterous. They sang a line or two from a song. Can you imagine if audiences applauded every time that happened?
It was extremely unusual, and I need an explanation. The whole Maude message board community should want to try to figure this out together.

The only way to figure it out is turn the clock back to 1972
venusx 12-17-2013, 07:18 PM Ignore tvfactfan, he/she seems to be under the impression that members here get paid by the post so even if there's nothing to add he/she will still manage to squeeze in a comment or two.
Anyway, my impression is that it took the four of them a few takes to get the scene nailed (someone fell during the limbo and/or they messed up the words of the song) so the reaction we saw was the crowd cheering them on finally getting it right.

Ya know, that's a pretty damned good explanation right there. Well done!

The audience take their cue to clap from a teleprompter.
