One thing that does not make sense is of all the episodes Steve Urkel appeared in it was never explained why the guy had to wear glasses all the time and why he was near sighted on the show.

It makes plenty of sense. It was explained on "Family Matters" that Steve developed myopia at an early age, just as plenty of other kids do.

Yeah but since he was a scientist wouden't he be able to cure his bad eyes with a laser where he could see better without wearing those thick glasses, those things look like a magnifying glass lol.
