View Full Version : I Finally Saw John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever
isiahthomas 12-02-2013, 02:10 PM I bought it this past weekend from Target and on the cover of the dvd, it says 30th anniversary. So i'm guessing that the 30th anniversary dvd came out in 2007 but i'm late getting it. The dvd has special features and i'm gonna check out the special features this weekend. I watched the movie last night and it's very good. I was surprised to see that it's rated R because i thought it was gonna be PG because it doesn't seem like a rated R movie since there's a lot of dancing. The things i didn't like about John was how he treated the white woman who wanted to be his girlfriend and she danced with him a few times at the club. She almost became his dancing partner until he saw another cute white woman he wanted to dance with and she ended up becoming his dancing partner for a dancing contest he wanted to enter. The cute white woman he wanted was stuck up and he shouldn't have been bothered with her because she acted like she didn't wanna be bothered.
So the white woman he didn't want, he did have sex with her and while he was having sex, he asked her was she on the pill hahahahahahaha. He should've asked her that before he had sex LOL. Then in another scene, she approached him with condoms and he walked away and she looked like she wanted to cry. I don't like the way he treated her because she was a nice woman and she was cute but i guess she wasn't the type of woman he wanted. She had sex with 2 of his friends while he was in the car with them which i thought was awful because one of his friends almost raped her. He almost raped the white woman he wanted who became his dancing partner and even though John and the white woman won the dancing contest, John gave his trophy to a hispanic couple that danced because he felt they danced better than him and his partner which i think he was stupid for giving them his trophy.
I was glad that John apologized to his dancing partner at the end and he wanted to be her friend even though i believe he wanted to be her boyfriend. I was also glad he wanted to change his life and move outta the neighborhood he was in so he could get away from his ignorant friends because if he would've stayed in that neighborhood, he would've been working at a dead end job at the paint store and he probably would've ended up dead if he had continued hanging with his ignorant friends. John is a very good dancer and i love the songs by The Bee Gees on the soundtrack which was Staying Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, More Than A Woman, Night Fever, You Should Be Dancing, Jive Talkin. I also like The Trammps Disco Inferno song. John Badham who directed this also directed the good movie Stakeout with Richard Dreyfuss, Emilio Estevez, Madeline Stowe, Forest Whitaker.
Penny Lane 12-02-2013, 03:14 PM I like this movie! It really puts one back to the 70's. That scene on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge really was scary! Yes the way he treated his dance partner was very bad. He really thought he was hot stuff didn't he? But the dancing and the BeeGees music score is great! I am not a "disco" fan but I do like the music in this movie!:D
Janice 12-02-2013, 04:05 PM I was obsessed with this movie and the sound track back then. I still watch it when it shows up on tv. That music was great. Love Night Fever.
isiahthomas 12-02-2013, 05:13 PM I like the beginning when John is walking and he sees a cute woman and he tries to block her from walking hahahahahahahahahaha. I love 70's disco music and i think disco was the best thing to happen to music. Lots of good 70's disco music i like. I also like how the dance floor was lighting up at the club that John and his friends went to. I don't know how Staying Alive which was the sequel to this was so terrible LOL. I was also surprised Sylvester Stallone directed that. He doesn't seem like the type that would direct a movie about ballet dancing LOL. I wish i could've had that woman that John didn't want in Saturday Night Fever. I know her name was Annette but i don't know her real name. She was cute and she was a nice woman. John is lucky to be married to Kelly Lynch because she's hot. They've been together a long time.

John is married to Kelly Preston.
The girl who played Annette is Donna Pescow. After the movie came out she got her own television series called "Angie"(1979-1980) about Angie Falco , a middle class Italian-American who marries the wealthy Brad Benson,(Robert Hayes) and she soon learns how to adjust to her new lifestyle the hard way! Co-starring Robert Hayes, Doris Roberts, Sharon Spelman, Debralee Scott. Directed by Garry Marshall.(Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley)
JamesG 12-02-2013, 07:40 PM I love the movie a little more since it was filmed in my neighborhood. My parents went on dates in the dance club used in the film. Across the street from the club was a bowling alley, that's no longer around, where my parents and their friends used to hang out at.
The pizzeria used in the opening scene, Lenny's Pizza, is still in business (where Travolta grabbed a slice from at the window).
I think that Saturday Night Fever not being thought of as an "adult movie" is because many people saw it on TV where all of the "mature" scenes were taken out. Scenes like the death on the bridge, the topless woman dancing; as well as some of the adult dialogue being changed.
isiahthomas 12-03-2013, 10:21 AM Nice picture of John, Kelly Preston and their daughter. I don't know why I said John is married to Kelly Lynch. Kelly Lynch is a actress who was in Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze and Cocktail with Tom Cruise. She's hot even though I haven't seen her in a long time. JamesG, that's nice that the movie was filmed in your neighborhood. Do you still live in the neighborhood where the movie was filmed? That pizza place is still in business that John got 2 slices from? Wow. I guess ya'll know that John has his pilot's license. I don't know too many actors that can fly a airplane.
JamesG 12-03-2013, 11:28 AM Yeah, I'm still in the neighborhood though it has changed a lot since those days. Lenny's Pizza is still in business and I managed to dig out their card.

I got curious about some of the other locations and looked into it:
The famous disco club was called 2001 Odyssey and they were open from 1975-1987.

The place then became a gay bar called Spectrum and they were open 1987-1995.

The spot then stood abandoned for a decade until the property was purchased in 2005. The colored dance floor was auctioned off and the spot is now a large commercial building for offices and a Chinese restaurant.

- The hardware store where Travolta worked at is still a hardware store today, though its owners and appearance have changed since the film.
- The White Castle where Travolta and his friends ate at closed sometime in the 1990s.
- The dance studio, Phillips Dance Studio, seems to have closed sometime recently (within the last decade).

I've never seen this movie but what does the women being white have to do with anything?
LUNCH 12-03-2013, 12:53 PM Very good movie! One of my favorite films from the 1970s.I was a kid when the movie came out and I remember how popular it was,and those songs topping the charts one after the other, and this was back when music was good.Great dancing, music and acting.Even the camerawork on the film is very good from the opening scene and throughout much of the film.An aside:Some of the songs like "More Than A Woman" and "How Deep Is Your Love" I don't even consider disco songs(not that there is anything wrong with disco).

Yes the original R-rated version is very much an adult type of movie. Also as you probably already know because the movie was so popular they released a PG version of it a fairly short time after the original R-rated movie came out.The PG version being much cleaner.
Nighthawk76 12-03-2013, 06:47 PM I love this movie! Great performance by Travolta and classic soundtrack by the Bee Gees!

I love "Night Fever" too! :)
isiahthomas 12-04-2013, 01:29 PM JamesG, i'm glad you mentioned White Castle hamburger place because i didn't think White Castle was in business back then. I was shocked to see it in the movie. I thought White Castle started their business in the 80's. I've never ate there because i don't like small hamburgers.
isiahthomas 12-04-2013, 01:43 PM JamesG, what city in New York was the 70's disco club Studio 54? How far is it from where you live? What business is in it's place now?
Wawwie 12-04-2013, 01:48 PM JamesG, what city in New York was the 70's disco club Studio 54? How far is it from where you live? What business is in it's place now?
Studio 54 was in Manhattan. The Saturday Night Fever club was in Brooklyn. Brooklyn and Manhattan are both New York City and only minutes apart from each other.

Not far at all from me.
The Roundabout Theatre Company has been using the Studio 54 spot since 1998.
The night club / restaurant 54 Below opened June 2012 in the basement of the place - http://54below.com/

It was way before that. White Castle was founded in the early 1920s.
Dude111 12-04-2013, 03:05 PM I bought it this past weekend from Target and on the cover of the dvd, it says 30th anniversary.I havent ever seen it and I had an oppertunity to get it @ salvation army and didnt!! (I saw the VHS tape there (I could always order it online I suppose))
Its really good huh??
isiahthomas 12-04-2013, 05:15 PM Yes it's a good movie.
isiahthomas 12-05-2013, 11:04 AM JamesG, aren't the owners of Studio 54 dead? I know one of them had aids.
JamesG 12-05-2013, 11:45 AM JamesG, aren't the owners of Studio 54 dead? I know one of them had aids.
Steve Rubell died in 1989. The other co-owner, Ian Schrager, is still alive.
isiahthomas 12-05-2013, 01:18 PM JamesG, have you seen 54 with Ryan Philippe, Mike Myers, Neve Campbell, Selma Hayek about Studio 54? I saw it and i liked it. Neve and Selma are hot. For fans of John Travolta, check out From Paris With Love and Killing Season with Robert Deniro. Those are good movies. He talked with a foreign accent in Killing Season. Have you seen those JamesG? John also did a movie last summer called Savages that Oliver Stone directed and that's good.
JamesG 04-17-2014, 07:20 PM I went out w/ my friends for Chinese food and they took me to the spot where the Club Odyssey was. I haven't been down to that area in a while. The place used to be a Chinese Seafood restaurant, but new management took the spot over a couple of years ago.
It's now a Cantonese style restaurant called Bamboo Garden Restaurant. The servers go around the tables w/ carts and you pick out what you want. Food was pretty good.
JamesG 02-18-2023, 11:38 AM Lenny's Pizza, the place where John Travolta grabbed two slices at the window, announced on their Facebook that they will be closing.

"It’s bitter sweet to inform you guys that we are closing our doors after so many years. My dad is finally retiring at 77 years old. We thankfully have done very well and felt it was best to close once my dad was ready. It’s time for him and I to enjoy our families. We want to thank everyone who has given us the opportunity to serve them.
Stay tuned for family fun videos and photos and more. We will be closing our doors on Sunday night at 10 PM. Thanks so much. This is a very emotional time for us. We ask for you to be respectful.
Thanks, Josephine"

John Travolta and Kelly Preston went there in June 2018 when they did a promotional event for the film Gotti and celebrated Saturday Night Fever's landmark status in Brooklyn.
