30 years ago, on December 2, 1983, Michael Jackson's Thriller had its world premiere on MTV. Easily THE most successful music video ever made. Some fun factoids about it:

The idea of the video came about when, in the summer of 1983, the Thriller album began to decline in sales.

The video cost a then-unheard-of $500,000 to produce.

The video was shot for 4 days in October 1983, two months prior to the premiere.

Filming locations took place in Los Angeles, at the Palace Theatre in downtown Los Angeles, the zombie dance sequence at the junction of Union Pacific Avenue and South Calzona Street in East Los Angeles and the final house scene in the Angeleno Heights neighborhood at 1345 Carroll Avenue.

The video was briefly released in theaters in Los Angeles so that it would qualify for an Academy award for Best Short Live Action. Despite the commercial success of the film it was not nominated for any awards.

In December 2009, the music video for "Thriller" was selected for the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, making it the first video to do so.

This would easily be in my top 5 of the most overrated music videos ever to air on MTV.

Thanks, the IMDb and Ebay links were unnecessary.

This video is like Papa Roach's Hollywood Whore music video. Which is more gruesome?

Zoneboy, how is Thriller a overrated video? It's one of the best music videos of all time. Did ya'll know there's a new Michael Jackson coming out that has some unreleased songs? I guess these were new songs he was working on before he died. I won't be buying it because the last album i bought from him came out about 4 or 5 years ago and it had some unreleased songs he was working on and the beats sounded terrible. I didn't like his last album Invincible that he actually recorded. I didn't like any of the songs because of the beats and he usually has good beats. I didn't like his Dangerous album that much either but there was a couple of songs on there i liked. The thing that i didn't like about Michael was that he took too long to come out with a album. It was a 5 year gap in between Thriller and Bad. There was a 10 year gap in between Dangerous and Invincible. I wish he had also done a few more group albums with his brothers. I don't know why he wasn't on their 2300 Jackson Street album. Marlon wasn't on that album either. I saw his brothers doing a couple interviews on Youtube and they were talking about working on a new album and i laughed because nobody wants to hear them without Michael. I'm surprised they did a few concerts last year without him.

I remember when that video first came out. We would watch MTV just waiting for that video to come on. It was definitely a game changer.

Being played-to-death was what did it for me. I liked it when I first saw it but quickly grew tired of it with all the repeated airings and of course it was in heavy rotation at the time so there was no way for me to escape it. I can recall many times changing the channel or hitting the mute button because I was so tired of hearing it. I don't hate the song nor the video and I realize it has it's place in MTV and music history but there is such a thing as overkill.

Yeah, it was definitely overplayed, but most videos were overplayed then as they only had a handfull of videos at the time. I remember watching MTV back then and seeing ZZ Top - Legs, Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time, Thriller, and The Cars - You Might Think, three or four times in the matter of a couple hours.

They had more than a handful but you're right about the others you mentioned being played a lot.

While most viewers at the time were anxiously waiting for "Thriller" to be shown again, I was waiting for this one. It was the first MTV video I ever saw and the one that got me hooked on the channel to start with.

Ola Ray who was Michael's woman in Thriller video did a interview about him after he died that i saw on Youtube. The woman who interviewed her asked her did she try to date Michael and did she try to have sex with him? LOL. She shouldn't have been asking her those questions because that's personal. She said Michael never made a pass at her even though she said she wanted to go on a date with him. She also said that Michael was a picky eater. She said he liked eating peanuts often. The white woman asked her how did she get the job for Thriller. Ola said Michael chose her because he saw her in a Playboy magazine hahahahahahahahahaha. Ola used to be a Playboy model. I can't picture Michael looking at Playboy LOL. I saw Ola had a small part in Beverly Hills Cop 2 movie with Eddie Murphy when Eddie, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton went to the Playboy mansion because they were looking for a killer. Ola was dancing at the party. She was hot back in the day and she still looks good. I'm glad she got rid of her jhericurl LOL.
