View Full Version : When do you decorate for Christmas?
Janice 12-01-2013, 04:07 PM I always decorate the weekend after Thanksgiving. I take them down around January 2nd, so they're up for a full month. I have a lot of decorations, most of which I've had for decades.

yankeesrj12 12-01-2013, 04:27 PM Typically Thanksgiving morning we put up the decorations outside. The decorations inside usually go up the weekend before Thanksgiving.
Everything comes down New Years Day.
shotzette 12-01-2013, 04:47 PM I usually get the tree up the second or third week of December. If i'm in the mood for more decorations than just the tree, I get an earlier start. I've never started before 12/1 though.

I refuse to acknowledge Christmas until after Thanksgiving. I don't get these ppl who start decorating before Halloween. By the time X-mas gets here you're tired of it lol
I try to get decoration down before Jan 1. Let the New Years' Day sun rise on your Christmas tree and you have bad luck all year, or so I've been told.
Nighthawk76 12-01-2013, 05:10 PM Need to start putting up decorations soon! :)

That sounds really nice, Janice. I bet you have a really nice display.
We will probably start putting ours up during this week, or next weekend.
Fleet 12-02-2013, 01:39 AM The weekend after Thanksgiving for me.
I put the exterior lights up today. Christmas tree in the living room will go up tomorrow and Tuesday.
treky 12-02-2013, 02:26 AM we do it about a week before Xmas.
comedyfreak 12-02-2013, 03:20 PM I usually do my decorating after Thanksgiving, this year I put up my window lights before Thanksgiving.
DJM77 12-02-2013, 06:37 PM I put them out on December 1st and I put them away on December 26th.
Ohio8 12-02-2013, 08:17 PM I don't.
80sTrivia 12-02-2013, 08:38 PM I normally put up my tree and decorations on the first Saturday in December and take them down on New Year's Day.
Regulus 12-02-2013, 08:41 PM I normally start the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Because I was out-of-town this weekend I began putting up my decorations today (I'll finish tomorrow). :)
BTW Volusia County actually did me a favor when they summoned me for Jury Duty today. My origional Plan was to leave on Wednesday and return today, but when I received the summons (a day after I set up my reservations) I pushed up things 24 hours, leaving home on Tuesday and returning yesterday. As a result, I only had to put with Atlanta's rush-hour traffic ONCE. :angryfire: If I had stuck with my origional plan I'd contend with it twice! From now on, if I have to drive through Atlanta, it will only be on a WEEKEND. :angryfire
Family Ties Forever! 12-03-2013, 01:39 AM I will decorate some time soon.
I don't have a set day each year when I pull out Christmas decorations. It seems to vary a little.
My brother and family decorated their house and got a real Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving.
Fleet 12-03-2013, 04:39 AM I forgot to mention that I keep up the decorations until Jan. 8 to 10. Even later if the weekend is only a few days after the 10th.
gilligan fanatic 12-03-2013, 03:29 PM Eventually haha, maybe two weeks before Christmas
Hawkee 09-30-2018, 07:16 AM I always start decorating for Christmas the week after Thanksgiving and our house gets nicely decorated for Christmas and first Mom puts up her Christmas village and it consists of dozens of porcelain houses and some of the houses my late grandmother made and it's such a great display. Then my mom installs a GE Christmas Music light show and when she turns it on the whole village comes to life and lights up like you wouldn't believe. Then we put our white Christmas tree up and when it's decorated it's fantastic and features tons of Hallmark ornaments including some sitcom themed ornaments including a Laverne And Shirley themed ornament in our tree as well. Then Mom brings out our beloved animated figures that we have had since my childhood and we have an animated Mickey and Minnie Mouse and a Santa Claus that's my favorite that says "Oh My Feet" and a musical little girl doll. Mom also has a Lionel Christmas Train that makes music and moves but we never put it up because my cat freaks out at it and knocks it over. My room is also decorated for Christmas too and I have garland and attached to the garland is Christmas stockings that are used for decoration. You guys would enjoy Christmas at my house because it's so wonderful
Bestie
Usually after Thanksgiving for me. My dad puts up the Christmas tree and all three of us help pitch in with the decorations.
PhoenixAcres 09-30-2018, 12:09 PM Usually around Thanksgiving

I do exactly the same Janice!
tlc38tlc38 09-30-2018, 01:43 PM This will be the first Christmas without my mama. It's gonna be rough but I know she'd want me to still put up the tree and decorate; so I will. We usually decorate either on Thanksgiving day or the day after.
We put it away either on Christmas Day or the day after.
We have a fake tree, but used to have a real one for a long time now.
Over the years though, we have had some ornaments break.
Foggy 10-01-2018, 09:39 AM I kind of thought it was a little early for this thread, then noticed it is a revisit from a thread started in December 2013. Anyway.....
This time of the year when "FALL has fallen upon us."
I get this sudden urge to eat turkey, while putting up a tree, in a Halloween Costume after getting back from picking apples at an orchid.
Opps.........I didn't tell you about the subject of the thread.
We use to decorate the first week in December and put things away by the January 2
Now, (and for the last 15 years)
we had found a Christmas Tree Farm that we go to the weekend, usually Sunday, after Thanksgiving. They have horse drawn wagons where you are taken out to pick out your tree. They even cut them down for you, a machine that shanks the tree and another machine that tightly wraps the tree for easier transportation.
Taking down the tree and putting things away has been as late as January 8......it's sure not fun getting old.

I usually dismantle my decorations on January 7 (January 6 is the 12th day of Christmas, its often called The Feast of the Kings or the Epithany, and celebrates the wise men visiting Jesus (They did not visit him in the manger). For me it's a "Last Hurrah" day for the holidays.

I also celebrate the Epiphany and will not take down decorations until then. Basically, I do what my mom and did did/do and put up decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving. Last year I didn't put up decoration and neither did my dad because it was the first Christmas without mom. This year it will depend on several factors occurring in my life now.
