After the success of Halloween (1978) and Friday the 13th (1980) the slasher movie became the most popular type of horror movie during the early 80's and the target for the moral majority. And very few of them actually did well at the box office. Even popular titles like Happy Birthday to Me and My Bloody Valentine did little box office business and didn't really find an audience until video. And there's a simple fact that most slasher movies were pretty bad. Ones that I find totally deplorable include Don't Answer the Phone, The Burning and Silent Night, Deadly Night. Still, there are some slasher movies that were true horror classics and here are some of my favorites. What are you're? :)

1. A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
2. Halloween (1978)
3. Friday the 13th (1980)
4. Scream 2 (1997)
5. Graduation Day (1981)
6. A Nightmare On Elm Street Part III-Dream Warriors (1987)
7. Happy Birthday to Me (1981)
8. Friday the 13th Part 3 (1982)
9. Halloween II (1981)
10. Prom Night (1980)

I love slashers, even the bad slashers, at least from the 80's, I find the bad ones extremely entertaining.

I like both The Burning and Silent Night Deadly Night, SNDN I try to watch it every December, interestingly it isn't the first horror film to have a killer dressed as Santa (Tales From The Crypt '72, Christmas Evil, To All A Good Night all had killer Santas before SNDN) , but it's one that became controversial when parents began protesting the film.

My Top 10 favorites (no order)-

My Bloody Valentine (1981)
Happy Birthday To Me (1981)
Halloween (1978)
Black Christmas (1974)
The House On Sorority Row
Blood Rage (1987)
Hell Night (1981)
Just Before Dawn (1981)
The Prowler (1981)
Friday The 13th (1980)

Also love- Final Exam, Prom Night, The Burning, Madman, Slumber Party Massacre, Terror Train, Humongous, The Final Terror, Intruder, The Mutilator, Curtains, The Silent Scream, Sleepaway Camp, Hide And Go Shriek, Death Screams, Slaughterhouse, Friday The 13th parts 2-5, Halloween II, and 4, The Initiation, The Slayer, Cheerleader Camp.

Some of my favorite bad slashers-

Pieces (1982)
Blood Lake (1987)
Last Slumber Party (1988)
Slumber Party Massacre II (1987)
Blood Hook (1986)
The Redeemer: Son Of Satan! (1978)

Horror House On Highway Five (1985)
Don't Go In The Woods (1981)
Bikini Girls On Ice (2009)

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane
Severance
The Cottage
The Hills Run Red
Toolbox Murders (2004)
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon

I hate slasher movies! I'm very squeamish and I just can't watch them. I like just good old spooky ghost stories like "Poltergeist". :D

Poltergeist is a classic! :D As far as slasher movies are concerned, you should give Halloween a try. Very scary but with very little gore.

Another one I liked that I didn't have enough room to put on my list is 1980's The Boogey Man. I like that one. Halloween and Friday the 13th were two of my earliest horror movie experiences. :)

The Boogey Man is great. The TV Spots used to scare me when they aired:lol:

I have the double feature DVD with The Boogey Man and the director's other movie The Devonsville Terror.

The Boogey Man 2 was awful as the majority of the movie is just scenes from the first. The Return Of The Boogeyman was just as bad.

I own all of these except Dr. Giggles, I was never a fan. Or Lovers Lane, though I have seen it, it's an okay Scream clone, it does have Les Nessman in it.

Offerings is a fun blatant rip off of Halloween.

I have the double feature DVD of The Initiation and Mountaintop Motel Massacre.

Some others I like-

Fatal Games (1984) This is a sports themed slasher, set at a school for Olympic hopefuls. The killer's weapon of choice is a javelin. It features Sally Kirkland, and Nicholas Love (who played Willy in The Boogeyman)

Silent Madness (1984). Released in 3D. It has both Katherine Kamhi and Paul DeAngelo from Sleepaway Camp. I have copies of both 2D and 3D.

Bloody Birthday (1981) Three kids go on a killing spree.

Satan's Blade (1984) A local is possessed by an evil spirit and kills patrons at a ski lodge.

Happy Hell Night (1992) Features Darren McGavin, and Sam Rockell plays a younger version of McGavin's character in flashbacks. The killer priest is creepy, except when he talks, sadly they tried to make him like Freddy Krueger.

Hospital Massacre (1982) Starring Barbi Benton.

Iced (1988) Fun, cheesy, slasher with a snow setting. Featuring the original Wednesday Addams Lisa Loring.

The Funhouse (1981) Directed by Tobe Hooper. Dean Koontz wrote the novelization.

StageFright (1987) One of the few Italian straight up slashers.

Savage Weekend (1979) Unlike most slashers this one doesn't center around teens/college students. Features "my name is Larry" William Sanderson.

Blood Harvest (1987) Yep, the one with Tiny Tim.

Girls Nite Out (1982) I've always liked the killer's outfit being the college mascot bear costume with metal claws.

The Dorm That Dripped Blood (1982) Daphne Zuniga's film debut. Love the ending.

The Funhouse is one of my favorite movies ever! I don't consider it a slasher movie though. I think its more of a Universal monster movie updated for the early 80's. I'm a big Tobe Hooper fan and The Funhouse is one of my favorites from him. :)

Two slasher remakes I like- My Bloody Valentine 3D, no where as good as the original, but good mindless fun.

And the remake of Silent Night Deadly Night, known as Silent Night. This killer Santa reminds me of early 80's exploitation flicks like The Executioner.

Yes!

If you haven't yet, I recommend Dean Koontz's novelization, it has a really interesting back story. I'm not sure if it was Lawrence Block's original script, or if Koontz created it himself.

I actually read it earlier this year. :) I believe that Koontz created the backstory himself.

Actually there is no way to guess who it was, as he is a totally unknown killer, which is part of what makes it scary.

I LOVE slashers, they are my favorite genre of horror. Besides the biggies like Halloween and Friday the 13th and all their sequels, here are some of what I've seen and even the bad ones were just as entertaining:

House of Death
Graduation Day
Madhouse (both the Vincent Price one and the 1981 one)
Happy Birthday to Me
My Bloody Valentine
Prom Night (1980) and the late 2000's one that sucked to high heaven
Night Screams
Twisted Nightmare
Sweet Sixteen
The Mutilator
The Slayer (this one pre-dates A Nightmare on Elm Street by two years)
Humongous
Hide and Go Shriek
Shadows of the Mind
The Night Brings Charlie
Edge of the Axe
The Initiation
Deadly Manor
Home for the Holidays (1972 TV movie)
Tower of Evil
The Mad Room (obscure 1968 horror with Stella Stevens)
Savage Water
The Forest
Girls Nite Out
Sorority House Massacre
Schizo
Schizoid
Silent Terror
Bloody Reunion
Silent Night, Deadly Night
Christmas Evil
Black Christmas
Silent Night, Deadly Night
Alone in the Dark
April Fool's Day
Haunts
Scream (1980)

Then there are the tons of giallo slashers from Italy which are a lot of fun and can get really gory.

I've seen a few modern slashers and I can't get into them. The Scream ones were good but for some reason, today's slasher movie-makers do not want to make the characters likable. They're all pouty "pretty white people with problems" who are ridiculously beautiful and annoying. You want the killer to get rid of them!

Great list. Have you seen Wendigo (1978)? It's from the same director as Savage Water.

Also like Scream (1980), fun little atmospheric film.

The first time I saw The Slayer, was back in the 80's on a double feature VHS with the 1983 slasher Scalps.

The 1980 Scream is about a group of adults who are on an outing and end up in a wild west type of town. They are the only ones there and some of them start to be killed off. The movie is eerie but very strange and not a lot happens. Then you have this random guy that comes in and tells them a story and the ending is really, really vague. I had to watch it a second time to try and piece together what was going on and I still don't know if I have it figured out.

Torgo, I haven't seen Wendigo but I have seen Ghostkeeper. And I've also seen Unhinged. That movie has a reputation as being horrible but I actually liked it, despite some questionable acting.

Ghostkeeper is excellent.

Unhinged is okay. It's cool that it was filmed here in Oregon, by an all Oregon crew. I've been to the Pittock Mansion where it was filmed. That ending was definitely unexpected!

There's definitely something creepy about it, and I think that how nothing is explained adds to it. My second favorite horror film set in a ghost town, the first being Ghost Town (1988).
