Benson from BENSON-in fact, I don't think it was ever said if Benson was his first or last name.

On "Soap" it was never mentioned whether Benson was his first or last name. However, on "Benson" it was finally stated that Benson was his first name and that his last name was DuBois.

For a long time, Kramer didn't have a first name, either. Late in the series we learn his first name, is Cosmo.

For the majority of the show, the main character's first name on "MacGyver" was unknown.
(In the last season of the show, a cool 2-part time travel/dream episode revealed MacGyver's first name to be Angus. It's mentioned once more in the series finale and that's pretty much all you ever hear of that- though references to his first name [as far as people asking about it] are made at times.)

Why would Waldo not be his first name? The writers obviously thought Waldo Geraldo Faldo was pretty funny- and I agree.
It's not the first time a TV character has been given a funny, rhyming name- when Shirley Feeney got married on "Laverne & Shirley", her married name was Mrs. Shirley Feeney Meany.
