The Strain Thriller Ordered to Series at FX
by Kimberly Roots
11/19/13

"The Strain" appears to be catching.

FX has ordered 13 episodes of the Guillermo del Toro-helmed drama, the cable network announced on Tuesday.

From Carlton Cuse (Lost, Bates Motel) and del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth), the high-concept thriller stars Corey Stoll (House of Cards) as Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, the head of a Centers for Disease Control team in New York City. Unexpectedly, the group is tasked with investigating a mysterious viral outbreak with the hallmarks of an ancient, evil strain of vampirism.

The cast also includes Mia Maestro (Alias), Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings), Kevin Durand (Lost) and Natalie Brown (Being Human).

Production will begin in November in Toronto; the series is slated to bow in July 2014.

FX Yanks Gross Billboards for "The Strain"
by Lynette Rice
June 27, 2014

FX has learned that some people just can’t stomach billboards that promote "The Strain", the cable net’s new horror show that’s based on the book trilogy by director Guillermo del Toro (Pacific Rim) and author Chuck Hogan.

Turns out the only way FX could worm itself out of this predicament was to just yank ‘em. “We are in the process of replacing the key art for The Strain on outdoor media in several locations,” according to a network statement.

The billboard was put up in Los Angeles a few days ago and many locals complained on social media sites, mainly Twitter, to voice their disgust.

"Billboard for "The Strain" or whatever that godforsaken thing is w/ the thing in the eyeball on my street; can I call the Mayor to complain?"

"Seriously, The Strain? I have to look at your disgusting eyeball billboard when I drive? Are you trying to make me crash and die?"

"Listen, "The Strain" billboard, with your worm-coming-out-the-eyeball... Stop ruining EVERY MORNING."

FX’s "The Strain" Debuts Strong with Nearly 3M Viewers
by DOMINIC PATTEN
July 15, 2014

It was icky, dark and something bloodier is definitely going on with "The Strain", but that seems OK with viewers. FX’s new series based on the novels by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan pulled in an audience of 2.99 million Sunday night for its 1-hour and 42-minute debut at 10PM. That’s 42% better that the cabler’s most recent other drama debut "Tyrant" did on its June 24th premiere.

Showing good DVR life in Live+3 numbers, the Middle East-based series drew 2.1 million viewers for its initial 1-hour and 22-minute opener that Tuesday night. With the first heavily promoted episode directed by del Toro and EP’d by the Pacific Rim director, Hogan and Carlton Cuse, the vampire drama was also 12% higher in terms of its audience than the 2.65 million viewers that the 97-minute debut of limited series "Fargo" got on April 15.

"The Strain" follows Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, played by Corey Stoll, as the NYC head of the Centers for Disease Control Canary Team and his crew try to figure out a mysterious viral outbreak that seems to have arrived via a Berlin-originated plane of seemingly dead passengers. That outbreak reveals itself to be a strain of vampirism.

While the series hasn’t officially been picked up for a second cycle, Cuse and del Toro have already said that they don’t want "The Strain" to go more than 5 seasons.

Yeah I knew people would complain about those billboards, I'm into graphic art so I didn't mind I just found them unecessary plastered all over the city.

I saw the pilot and while it is interesting it was rather slow which is what I hate of current dramas, since now the writers are constructing their shows around story arcs because people know don't bother watching a show daily they'd rather binge watch them.

I finally got to see the show and it's pretty good. I have the first two shows on DVR and I'll catch up tonight.

FX Renews "The Strain" for Season 2
Aug 19, 2014
by Liz Raftery

FX has renewed "The Strain" for a second season, the network announced Tuesday. Season 2 will consist of 13 episodes and is scheduled to premiere in summer 2015.

The move comes as no surprise, as "The Strain" is cable's top new series of 2014 among adults 18 to 49. The show has averaged 4.5 million viewers in first-run airings this season, while the pilot drew 12.7 million total viewers with delayed and repeat viewings added, making it the most-watched series premiere in FX's history.

"We've never had any doubts about The Strain," FX President John Landgraf said in a statement.

"Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale."

Added del Toro: "I am thrilled! Another season to spread the virus!"
