View Full Version : When and why did Sally Struthers get so obese?
Yong Fang 11-13-2013, 09:20 AM When did Sally Struthers begin to be overweight, and then grossly overweight? I wonder why this happened? Did she have a child and never lost the weight and gained? Did she turn into a food addict as comfort for possibly a faltering career? I know that she was married and divorced, and again, food can be abused like alcohol or a drug. It makes people feel good.
Its funny to see a show you saw as a child as an adult, and see the characters differently, and Sally Struthers was really cute, and basically stayed the same weight from 1971 to her Gloria show in the early 1980's. By the 1990's, she was obese doing commercials for a charity to feed starving kids in Africa. Even the cartoon South Park lampooned this. Sort of a big irony.
I guess from her DUI arrest picture that she is still a big woman. Meathead is also fat, unlike his father Carl (Rob Reiner is a Meathead so......). As I just think about it, Meathead was an original insulting name. What was the story behind it? Probably some writer came up with it as a staff meeting and stuck.
So why did Sally get so huge?
Mr. Television 11-13-2013, 02:06 PM She sure hasn't aged well.
Tap Dancer 11-13-2013, 03:10 PM So why did Sally get so huge?
Only Sally knows. I'm sure food does play a role, as it does most of the time. But weight gain can also be caused by medications and menopause.
She was such a pretty little thing.
cleverfun3000 11-13-2013, 07:10 PM This is why I never get into what a celebrity looks like NOW. I enjoy him/her when they were at the TOP of THEIR GAME. So many, many celebnrities age horrifically and they barely look like a shell of their distant former selves. Actually, it's quite depressing to see the way the men and women stars of the 60's and 70's look today. So rather than make myself gag, I go back and look at their shows when they were a pleasuree to watch and SEE.

TheCars1986 11-15-2013, 09:11 PM Remember in the 90's when she was doing those infomercials for starving children in Africa? Well instead of shipping the food to the starving kids she ingested it all. Henceforth, she became obese.
In all seriousness, she's 66 years old. She's not Jack LaLanne. She looks good for 66, IMO.
littletydramon 08-27-2014, 12:04 AM She got a DUI? Yah, South Park really parodied this whole topic. Lol
biffbronson 08-27-2014, 05:42 AM I do think changes came more quickly for Sally than for most of her contemporaries. For example, Arlene Golonka was extremely hot in the early '70s, and was still a hottie when she appeared on Matlock as we approached the 1990s. It wasn't until years later when she appeared on King of Queens that her appeal had definitely diminished. Meredith MacRae is another example of someone whose looks endured very well on into the '80s. Unfortunately for Sally, it's as with the general population: For some, change comes too soon.
Bonniegirl 08-27-2014, 02:20 PM I think it is just her weight that is the problem. He face stayed pretty I think. She doesn't look really old or bad in the face at all.
Sally is a short girl, and she was kind of busty and curvy even when she was thinner. As girls like that get older they tend to put on weight, more than a taller, lanky girl would! And if she likes her food a lot and isn't a fan of exercise, well there you go!

I can see what you mean, take Martin Lawrence for example. In the 90's he got popular and was in shape and now that he's in Partners nearly 20 years later he's overweight and can hardly move now. He won't need much padding if he does another Big Momma's House. Back on topic Sally started gaining weight when she guest starred in AITF Season 9 and later on her own show.
Mood Ring 08-30-2014, 03:28 PM I'll take a wild guess...
Food.

Food.
Or no love life which led to depression which led to eating a lot of food lol

I believe Norman Lear's dad called Norman that when he was a kid.
Hughsgirl 11-05-2014, 10:49 AM She wasn't the only one who gained weight and a lot of it - Rob Reiner did as well!
Margarita 11-05-2014, 12:06 PM A Lot of actresses have eating disorders when in their "prime" and once you have had anorexia or bulimia for so long, your body rebels and throws you into the overeating disorders, which are caused from the same reasons as the anorexia and bulimia.
That would be one guess. Auto immune disease would be another....

That is a true thought, bonniegirl.
Plus time has moved on. It is much more of struggle as you age to stay thin. Some people have it easier, Sally with her Dui problem, she may have other things to think of than to look thin. The last time I saw her on tv was The Mark Addy/Jamie Gertz tv sitcom of the ?late 1990's where she play ?Marks mother.

Yes they do. And I am speaking from personal experience. I'm not as heavy as Sally. But I gained a good deal of weight. I am short and when I was younger I was a very similar build to Sally when she was on All in the family.;)
With me it was having children, liking food and beer. And when you go off the track of working out , age and menopause , well you end up chubby!
And as I said I'm not as big as Sally, Mama June or Melissa McCarthy, but I am overweight . So not to make more excuses but my current hubby is Ok with it, he never says anything negative against my weight. Not that I'd like him to be repulsed and call me a fat pig, but for him to be fine with it and love me just the same, I don't have as much incentive to lose weight. His Mom was big and his sisters are big girls, so it doesn't bother him if his wife isn't tiny I guess!!! It bothers me though. I mean, I used to be really tiny and cute, and not to mention it's not really great for my health!!! :(

You're thinking of Still Standing. It ran from 2002-2006.
cleverfun3000 11-17-2014, 12:22 PM Older women are not under daily pressure to maintain a hot sexy figure like young women in their 20"s and30"s. By the time they are 40, they are either married to someone who loves them for who they are, not what they look like, or they are not actively in the market for men. Competition from younger, slimmer, more appealing women is constant, and when you see a woman who was once attractive, but no longer is, rest assured she has thrown in the towel.
LittleRickyII 11-17-2014, 05:37 PM It bothers me though. I mean, I used to be really tiny and cute, and not to mention it's not really great for my health!!! :(
Don't despair! You can get back to your old weight. You and I are about the same age. A couple years ago, I started putting on extra pounds. I was still going to the gym and still trying to maintain a healthy diet but, nevertheless, I had put on 15-20 pounds in a fairly short space of time. It was maddening to see extra weight even though I was still maintaining my exercise and diet routine. So I decided to ramp it up on my cardio workout (which I had never made a big priority). Now I make sure I run 2.5 miles on the treadmill at least three or four times a week (in addition to lifting). And it worked! The 20 pounds are gone and I'm back to my old weight.
James28 11-19-2014, 11:40 PM My opinion of what Sally Struthers looks like now, I think... she looks like a pillow.

Wow very cool about your weight loss! ;) Thanks for your support. I just have to "do it"!!! Not to sound cliche' but that is exactly it. I gotta get off my butt and workout and not over eat and put down the beer!! With the extra time off since I am not working there isn't any excuse that I shouldn't be working out. Holidays coming up will be rough watching the extra fattening foods. SO I really have to start some type of diet after the holidays, and get to working out pronto! ;)
Coffeecup 11-21-2014, 11:38 AM We shouldn't keep commenting on Sally. If she is healthy, by that I mean she isn't suffering from cancer, diabetes, or depression, we should be happy for her. Weight is a problem but there are ailments a lot worse.
UMfan77 11-22-2014, 11:38 AM In the season 9 "California, Here We Are" episodes, Mike called her "fat" and Gloria completely lost it, balling her eyes out and running into the (very green) bathroom. Edith heard Gloria's crying, she went into the bathroom to see what was wrong and that's when Gloria told Edith that she and Mike were separated.
I think that was totally mean of Mike to call her fat! What a creep!!

If there was anything positive during the time that I was laid off, it was that: getting to the gym regularly. :) I got plenty of sleep every day because I didn't have to be up early. And I hit the gym every day because what else was I going to do? And the exercise gives you a boost not only physically, but mentally as well. So that helped keep my spirits up while I hunted a new job. (I find that if I'm not exercising regularly, my mental state suffers.) So while I was laid off, I was in great shape. But then I went back to work and a couple years later started gaining weight. But like I said, in the last six months I've accelerated the cardio and I've lost the unwanted weight I had gained. You mention diet. That's important, too. I'd definitely cut back on the beer. I drink only occasionally. Usually when I go to a bar I just order bottled water. Sometimes I will order one beer, but only one, and drink it very slowly. I'm sure bartenders don't like me too much. :)
frankred 10-27-2015, 10:21 AM She did even worse to him. She was having an affair with Bud Kreger.
Absurd question especially considering that it is in the context of your disappointment because Sally Struthers does NOT fit your definition of
"attractive" or "pretty" or worthy of your approval.
Does Ms Struthers owe it to you to look a certain way?
The fact is that people do age and some people will gain weight as they age even if they don't increase food intake. I have seen this happen to a lot of people. You don't know if that is the case with Ms Struthers. But many here seem to have such vile judgemental mentalities that they take it personally and make negative statements and assumptions about Ms Struthers.
If you are concerned about her health and not her appearance (it seems most or all posters here are not) , then the discussion could be more constructive.
Of course there are people who are struggling in their show business careers after they were in a successful TV show years ago . Of course some people cope with substance abuse or food addiction etc. Of course we should wish that they get on the road to recovery if that is the case.
But it is always amazing to me how there are the comments that there are on the internet like there are in this thread. Such shallow thoughts
Chocolate Moose 12-08-2015, 12:03 PM She must know how she looks!
I know that when I said something about Leah Remini's weight gain on this board years ago (actually her failure to lose weight after her baby, despite a personal trainer and a private chef), I was told that she reads the board and that she's upset when she hears us discussing her weight gain. Well, duh. Don't be a star and be fat, and then sensitive about it. You're in the public eye. Your failings are public.
As far as Sally, I don't know. I have friends who were thin as rails in their 20s but gained as they got older, either due to pregnancies or other problems. That's common. But real obesity is a health risk and I wonder why people don't do something about it. You can't just wave your hand and say you have a problem and not address it.

Wow! You sound like a real busybody and someone who defines everything for everyone, and you decide what is the right and wrong reason to do everything and that everyone has to revolve their thoughts, behaviors and lives around you .
It is not that people are not addressing other people's "issues." It is that some people such as yourself, take it upon yourself to say that there is an "issue" and that you have the answer and that you have the right to unnaturally involve yourself in other's lives .

I find it sad that your entire post consists of some 98% (at least) of words that lament your supposed "unattractiveness" because your figure changed from when you were younger, but you only give a brief afterthought of a mention about the potential effects to your health.
Your health is much more important than how you look. I have seen people who happen to have heavy-set looking bodies (though not morbidly obese) and they are physically active. In NYC where I am from there are running groups, biking groups and other exercise groups who all meet and exercise in Central Park, and I am amazed at how much strength, stamina and endurance and even speed that a lot of people have who are not rail thin or very muscular. In other words, sometimes people with "thick shapes" or who have some flab and cellulite are particularly fit . I used to run long distances a lot but got injured and can only jog short distances. I gained some pounds but don't look any heavier. I know that it can be hard to take up an exercise routine. When I first decided that I would like to run a marathon I trained dedicatedly and it was not easy. You can't just practice running when you feel like it or when the weather is nice. I was out there in rain, and snow and heat. There were times in which I asked myself why I was doing it when it is so unpleasant. Of course if you want to get more fit and not do anything extreme like run a marathon, you can do it .
I hope you don't take this the wrong way but it is silly and pathetic that you feel that your husband has to want you to be thinner so as to have "incentive" to live a healthier lifestyle. It is good that he loves you unconditionally but you should not mix that up with thinking that being unhealthy is how you should stay. If you look up information on the internet you can find information about exercise routines and /or diets that are best for you. It is possible to make it fun though it is good that you learn to have willpower and stick to some of the unplasant aspects.
It is about feeling good about yourself rather than depending on others to approve of you.
Some people might say that "curvy" women "look better" than thin women or muscular women .
It is just a shame and it is sexist . Women should not fall for it. It is like setting up women to control them by disapproving of them or approving of them strictly for their looks.
Society should have come away from this long ago
cleverfun3000 12-09-2015, 04:05 PM The above poster make a lot of good, strong and solid points. Indeed, what she says is very true. However, this society as well as many societies the world over much prefers the visual delight of a sexy, shapely woman who is in total control of her luscious figure. It shows discipline and self-esteem as well as restraint and respect for one's own body and health.

No , self esteem is also defined as being something that comes with yielding to other's approval.
Real self esteem does not mean that when others' say you "Look good" that you are being respected or that you respect yourself for wanting that kind of response.
ILuvCarolBurnett 12-29-2015, 01:01 AM For reasons I simply don't understand, Sally Struthers was attacked unmercifully in the media about her weight. I never understood it. It was nasty and unnecessary. As long as she is comfortable with who she is and what she looks like, it is really no one else's business.

So you would be offended if someone complimented you on your looks because you think looks should never matter? So let me ask you, what attributes do you think a man should look for in a woman since you seem insistent on telling men how they should think (as if you have the right to give such commands)?
It is beyond the ability of feebleminded people to understand simple !ogic
Edison 12-29-2015, 09:44 PM Oh, maybe she just wanted to emulate this guy. Or, not. Anyway, the first time ever I saw her face, "Five Easy Pieces" (1970)...

Who's kidding who here? Being fat is just as bad as having a pack a day cigarette habit. Think Mike and Molly. . ..how long do you think a couple like that will last if they keep pilin' on the pounds??
Retro4Life 12-30-2015, 01:30 PM I don't remember any statement where Sally or any other celebrity agreed to become "role models" for anyone, ever.
If you are looking to Hollywood to provide role models, you have a lot more problems than someone who is struggling with weight gain.
Look in the mirror before you sit back smugly and judge others. And please participate in more constructive discussions.
p.s. And before anyone asks, no, I'm not overweight, by a long shot.
