Beginning December 2, 2013, subscribers can look forward to the following changes:

ENCORE BLACK Replaces ENCORE DRAMA — Showcasing popular programming for the African-American community, ENCORE BLACK will bring a terrific combination of commercial-free premium movie content, comedy such as "Martin Lawrence's 1st Amendment Stand Up," and the introduction of TV favorites including: "What's Happening!!," "Diff'rent Strokes," "227," and "Amen." ENCORE BLACK will be originated in HD and service the strong viewership from the African-American community, which has historically over-indexed on premium channel viewership. The December launch will spotlight Academy Award® nominee, actor Samuel L. Jackson with films such as Unbreakable, Losing Isaiah, Freedomland, One Eight Seven, and more.

ENCORE CLASSIC Replaces ENCORE LOVE — A new addition to the ENCORE HD channel portfolio, ENCORE CLASSIC will be a favorite for the Baby Boomer set, with a mix of generational evergreen movie favorites and classic TV series. Leveraging the deep and broad ENCORE movie library of new release and favorite hits, ENCORE CLASSIC will add TV hits, "Murphy Brown," "Magnum, P.I.," and "Night Court" to its programming slate. Classic movie titles will air every night with a new favorite every day of the month at 9PM ET/PT. Films include Kramer vs. Kramer, American Graffiti, Independence Day, Breaking Away, Stand By Me, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Good Will Hunting, Tootsie, Basic Instinct, The Notebook, and more.

As much as I would love to see "Diff'rent Strokes", "Amen", "227", and especially "Murphy Brown", I refuse to pay DIRECTV anymore money than I already do for these channels.I understand!!

Now they are trying to get everyone to UPGRADE to THIER BOX (which you lease) as a way to charge you EVEN MORE MONEY!!

My box would most likely work with what they are doing...... I believe all they are doing is moving the channel higher.....

For example:

USA NETWORK is now assigned to 242 .. After they move USA it will be assigned to 1900 (Im not sure if thats the right #) and RE-MAPPED TO 242 on thier newer boxs... (On the newer boxs it will still show up on 242)

I have an older box (AN RCA) and my box will not do the remapping, however it WILL RECIEVE up to 9999,so all directv has to do is authorise my box to get these channels where they actually are!! (In other words I would watch USA on 1900)

I dont want to lose my excellent box and be given 1 of thier pieces of garbage whidch doesnt work as well!! (If they take it from me,I will most likely cancel as I dont want garbage!!)

I have been a subscriber for 12 years or more........

I was able to shift around my programming package and delete the "HD extra pack" of channels that I never watch and I now can view the Encore channels for only $1 or so more a month than I already was paying. When/if they stop airing "Murphy Brown" I will delete these Encore channels from my package.

I just bought me some blank DVDs so I can record "Murphy Brown" seasons 2-10 and "227" seasons 2-5.

I may end up recording seasons 5-8 of "Diff'rent Strokes". It all depends if I have enough discs.

In haven't seen "MB" in years so it will truly be a special treat!

I already should have these in my package. At least on the TV in my room. Because I have the Starz/Encore pack and the HD add on pack. Sucks that I cannot watch the sitcoms with my mom though. Since the TV in the family room is SD only. I'll have to record them on my TV and watch them while I go to sleep.

I wonder if Encore Classics will be showing the syndicated edits or the network edits of Night Court. Some of the syndicated versions have completely different scenes from the ones on DVD.

I don't presently have a subscript to Encore but I'm just interested to see how this pans out.

Edit: Murphy Brown suuuuuucks. I have no idea why they're showing it. Show The John Larroquette Show and Night Court back to back. Don't pay those pressed Boston Legal stans dust. They're irrelevant.

Did you not see the part that the Encore stations are commercial free and unedited? Even if a show is airing on another channel it wouldn't be as desirable there edited and filled with commercials. Plus you mention 1 show. There's at least 6 coming to the new channels. Murphy Brown is one of my favorites, it's not airing anywhere and only has the first season on DVD. Night Court isn't airing anywhere either.

I think I've mentioned this before but Encore should really go into the classic TV biz. They should have at least 1 or 2 channels that show only classic TV programs because they really do a good job when they do air them..As mentioned they show them uncut, commercial free plus great picture quality, episodes in perfect order etc.Or in other words how a cable TV channel that you pay for SHOULD air programs.
The blog did mention that they would be showing other sitcoms in the future. I'm not sure if that means they will add more to the existing schedule or if they will remove certain shows and replace them with others. I'm Suomi excited about the shows being uncut and commercial-free---this means I won't have to edit the commercials out when I recorded them!

That's good to know.Another thing is they do not speed up the picture at all,so when you watch an older show it's DVD or almost DVD quality.

DirecTV does have TVONE; it is channel 328. I record A Different World from it. It has syndication edits but at least TVONE airs the shows with full-screen closing credits.

I have been wondering for years why Encore was only airing TV shows on the Westerns Channel. Then last year they added Diagnosis Murder and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour to their Suspense channel. I was so glad to get complete episodes of DM--of course, the entire series has just been released on DVD. Many years ago when Encore Suspense was Encore Mystery, they aired some TV shows like The Avengers.

I am so glad they are finally branching out with mixes of classic TV shows on some of their other channels. Hopefully uncut (Gunsmoke seems uncut on Encore Westerns, but that doesn't mean all the shows necessarily will be--heck, even some DVD releases of TV shows have syndication edits) and definitely commercial-free! And with full-screen closing credits!

I have been watching Diff'rent Strokes on Antenna TV but it will be good to be able to record the complete episodes (from the seasons not yet on DVD) from the Encore Black channel.

I agree with TVFactFan that The Jeffersons gets no love. It airs too early on TVONE (6am) for me to watch it, and Antenna TV is carrying almost every Norman Lear show in the evenings EXCEPT The Jeffersons. I hope Encore is able to pick up The Jeffersons.

I always wondered why there seemed to be no market for a premium channel that airs uncut commercial-free classic TV the way TCM does for movies. I've been paying for Encore for years just so I could watch uncut episodes of the pre-color Gunsmoke episodes. (I wish they would bring back The Big Valley too.) Maybe the market is finally developing.

That's because the general public consider classic films "timeless" and they respect them with high regard. And they consider classic TV shows "dated" and "boring". It's sad but true.

I like both forms of entertainment but I prefer TV over movies any day.

Well, you kept asking if DirecTV had TVONE, and I didn't see a definitive reply, so I thought I'd let you know.

I don't think either DISH or DirecTV offer any of Antenna TV, MeTV, THIS TV, or RTV, do they?

I know, and this was back before MeTV went national, that Weigel offered to let DirecTV broadcast one of their stations (can't remember if it was MeTV or MeToo) for free, but DirecTV refused. That was Weigel's claim; I don't know if DirecTV had legitimate reasons for turning it down that Weigel didn't want to publicize.

I agree with you. I do like TCM but I prefer the "short form" of TV shows to long movies most of the time.

It's interesting that motion pictures are viewed by many as the superior form, but when TV began gaining steam in the 1950s they almost killed the motion picture industry, which had to develop widescreen to save themselves. Big stars were suddenly willing to appear on I Love Lucy during its Hollywood story arc to plug their pictures.

For whatever stupid reason, people will gladly watch old movies that they are unfamiliar with and that they've never seen before but only common, frequently seen older TV shows will get any kind of viewership. If people don't know an older TV show, they won't give it a chance, no matter how great it might be.

RobbieG

That's right. Sometime in the 90s or early 2000s, when The Big Valley was in syndication, whoever was handling the syndication package replaced the season 4 opening credits with the season 3 opening credits. The season 4 credits had Barbara Stanwyck in a brown dress which looked much better than the blue dress from the season 3 credits. I know because I have many of the episodes recorded on VHS from the late 80s when it ran on the CBN channel.

When Encore Westerns aired The Big Valley in the late 2000s, it had the messed up opening credits from the syndication package.

When Nick@Nite ran Bewitched in the early 90s, they used the original, slower opening sequence for season 1 that matches the tempo of the closing credits for season 1 which are still used. I know because I have many of these episodes recorded on VHS. Sometime after that--and maybe it was when the show went to TV Land--the season 1 opening credits were replaced with the opening credits from season 2 or 3. You can even see on Antenna TV now that the opening credits have a copyright at the bottom saying 1966--even for the season 1 episodes which aired in 1964--because the original season 1 credits were replaced with season 3 credits. Also, there is a second copyright below the 1966 copyright that says 2000 CPT Holdings. I am wondering if when CPT Holdings renewed the copyright in 2000, that's when the original season 1 credits got removed from the syndication package.

On the season 1 DVD of Bewitched that was released, the copyright banner has the right year but the opening music is still wrong for season 1; it's the 1966 music, not the 1964 music. Sometimes the changes in the syndication package seem to become permanent even when the show makes it to a premium channel like Encore Westerns or even onto DVD.

I believe the Bewitched DVD sets have syndication edits in them, as well.

(1) I currently have a standard def (SD) package from DirecTV. I get Encore Westerns, Encore Drama, Encore Love, etc. now as part of that package. But will I not be able to see the new channels if they are HD-only?

(2) Since the old classic shows were shot in the 4:3 ratio, does that mean they will all air with sidebars (pillarboxed) since they will be airing on HD channels?

As of now they air available through the regular SD pack.

Currently those two channels upscale alot of their older stuff. So it would be stretched a little and not be boxed.

Sure someone out there has them but none of them are of that much importance to me to pursue. I have shows from home recordings dating back to 1974 so believe me, they are in somebody's collection.

So, the most important question, are the shows complete and unedited? From that era, they should be coming in at around 23:30 to 24:00.

I think the only people who would be interested in "checking in" are those who are fans of the Jeffersons since that's where it spinned off from

Murphy Brown and Night Court make a great pairing. Magnum, P.I. was ok, I definitely prefer Tom Selleck's current show Blue Bloods.

Yes. They seem to be.

I saw scenes from Murphy Brown and Night Court's pilots that I do not remember seeing when the shows were on TV Land and Nick at Night. Also, I saw scenes from the first 2 eps of Different Strokes that I don't remember seeing when I watched them on Antenna TV last year.

These are master tapes. I'm sure.

Also. When someone was saying that the picture quality looked bad on What's Happening! It's probably because they are airing the master tapes...and they are not going to look great after all these years. The quality of Different Strokes was kinda crappy too. But, like I said. These are old tapes. From the 70s.

I don't buy alot of DVDs. The player in my bedroom is a POS and I don't have the money for a new one right now. Because, when I do upgrade. I'm going blu ray or nothing.

I own season 1 of "Murphy Brown" so I can't wait til they start airing season 2! However, it's still fun rewatching season 1 on TV. I already got me some blank DVDs and I'm ready to record!!

I've also been recording "Amen". I already own a bootleg copy I bought on ioffer but the quality is horrible compared to these new airings on encoreBLACK.

Season 1 of MB on DVD wasn't edited and they match up to what's being aired now, to my knowledge, unless I'm missing something.

I own all 9 seasons of "Night Court" and I agree with you about "Murphy" and "NC" making a great pair.

Nope. You can't! I'm watching Different Strokes right now. Gary Coleman was an adorable child. So funny and precocious as Arnold.

I can't wait for season 5 of "Diff'rent Strokes" to start because I already own seasons 1-4. I know it'll be a few months if they continue to only air one episode a night but I'm willing to wait.

The two show just mesh well together kinda like "The Golden Girls" and "Designing Women" fit well together.

Why? because they are both workplace comedies?

Gary Coleman had a real talent for comedy and Dana Plato was super cute. Also, who wouldn't want a dad like Mr. Drummond!

Glad that Encore rebranded the 2 channels. Checked them out and its good if you want to watch something and there's nothing on regular tv.

How can you tell if Different Strokes or What's Happening are uncut or not? I say this because I've watched DS pilot and cant tell any difference between that one and the one that airs on Antenna TV.

One easy way to tell if they're un-edited is how many minutes each episode runs. Those shows run about 25 minutes each on Encore,so they are not edited.

Just wondering if anyone else is having their screen pixelate and/or freeze at different parts during the shows? My TV doesn't do this on other channels, only the encore channels. It's annoying.
