I have been thinking how many characters smoked. Many actors smoked in real life but, did their character smoke.
At the moment I think of Lucy Ricardo. We saw lucy puffed many times. and Lucille Ball smoked too.
Can you think of others. I know Mad Men characters smoked. I wonder why most shows didn't show smoking. Was in a problem with the takes of the scenes or did people think even than it wasn'y good for people to be seen smoking. You could also mentioned drinkers.

I think they all smoked on I Love Lucy (Ricky, Lucy, Fred & Ethel)

As far as non-Sitcoms:

Columbo (Peter Falk) - cigars

Bea Benaderet from "Petticoat Junction" smoked
Mike Norell who played Capt. Hank Stanley on "Emergency" used to smoke.

On the Beverley Hillbillies, the show advertised Winston Cigarettes in the earlier years. They would show Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan and Bea Benaderet, (in character) as Jed, Granny, and Pearl, smoking as they indorsed the product at the end of the show.

Whoopie Goldberg's character Mavis Rae, smoked on Whoopie. They used to have a ritual of going outside to smoke.


Ward Cleaver smoked a pipe on Leave It To Beaver.

Charles Ingalls smoked a pipe on Little House on the Prairie.

Morticia from the The Addams Family smoked- she really smoked!:lol:

Suzanne decided to take up smoking on Designing Women, but Julia made her go outside in the cold to smoke.

I smoked for 10 or so years and I quit. I've been clean for 3 years this past October 24th.

Kramer from "Seinfeld" did smoke!!!

It was revealed that Dorothy on The Golden Girls, was a former smoker. In one episode she started smoking again.

Lucy was the rare exception. I don't think any other women of family sitcoms (1950's-60's) smoked in character.

Al Calavicci on "Quantum Leap" constantly had a cigar at hand, though he wasn't actually seen smoking it all the time. A lot of times he was just holding it and that's all.
MacGyver smoked once in the "Pilot" episode- (but it was for science! He was using the smoke to fool laser sensors and got them to blow each other out, so he could continue on his way. He also waved the smoke out of his face with a look of discomfort and commented, "Nasty habit." (Since that was the only time that was ever seen, I'm pretty sure MacGyver was not a smoker otherwise.)

No he did not. In the episode "The Pipe", when Fred sent Ward the pipe from Germany, Ward even says he doesn't smoke and so isn't sure why Fred would send him a pipe.

Steve Douglas (Fred MacMurray) smoked a pipe regularly on My Three Sons.
