Lawyer Offers Students $1,000 To Skip Law School
'Anything But Law School Graduate Scholarship' aims to push students toward other careers

A lawyer in Chicago is offering students $1,000 to not go to law school. Matthew Willens, a personal injury attorney, created the "Anything But Law School Graduate Scholarship" for students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who are entering graduate school in a non-legal field.

Willens told NBC Chicago that the scholarship is intended to deter students from entering an already saturated industry where there are way more lawyers than there are available jobs. "I think law school is a wonderful thing -- it was a wonderful part of my life -- this is simply a supply-and-demand issue," Willens said.

Law school applications are beginning to reflect the lack of jobs in the field, NBC Chicago reports. The number of applicants for law schools is down nearly 18 percent since 2012, according to the Law School Admission Council.

The world needs less lawyers, most definitely.

About 15 years ago I was looking into law school because I really wanted to be a lawyer. I had the grades and the interest but decided against it because even then there were too many. I know several who attended law school and never worked in law. For every person getting a $100,000 job out of school there are two others working in jobs that don't require a law degree. My former employer was paying lawyers $38,000 which is really low for a college graduate.

That is so true. Attorneys really do come a dime a dozen these days. A very new attorney was just hired to be my accounting assistant, because the legal positions available are so slim.
